Are Your Students 'Happy', 'Perfect' Or 'Amicable'?, Ray Peck Dec 2002

Are Your Students 'Happy', 'Perfect' Or 'Amicable'?, Ray Peck

Ray Peck

'Happy' numbers were discovered by a young girl. 'Perfect' numbers were known to the Greeks and given special significance. 'Amicable' numbers have a long history in magic and astrology, making love potions and talismans. In 1866, a sixteen year-old boy discovered a pair of amicable numbers previously unknown. Birthdays, house numbers, telephone numbers and even the names of the students in a class can provide the number source for investigation. This mathematics is interesting and accessible to students in the middle years and provides an opportunity to explore numbers, practice skills, learn some history of mathematics and have some fun …

Making Meaning In Maths : Adult Numeracy Teaching, B Johnston, B Marr, Dave Tout Dec 2002

Making Meaning In Maths : Adult Numeracy Teaching, B Johnston, B Marr, Dave Tout

David (Dave) Tout

In this paper, the authors argue that adult numeracy is a small educational field with little published research and only a small number of teaching materials and professional development and training packages available. Since the late 1980s, Australia has become quite active in the adult numeracy area and now has developed quite a range of adult numeracy curriculum, teaching resources and professional development options for teachers. This paper defines numeracy as more than mathematics and describes the establishment of the course, Adult Numeracy Teaching : Making Meaning in Mathematics (ANT), a professional development course targeted at experienced adult literacy, language …

As Long As It Takes: Responding To The Challenges Of Adult Student Persistence In Library Literacy Programs, John Comings, Sondra Cuban, Johannes Bos, Kristin Porter

John P. Comings

Research has shown that meaningful improvements in adult literacy require more than the annual average of about 70 hours that adult learners spend in organized literacy instruction. Low student persistence is therefore a critical issue for library literacy programs and other providers of adult education. In response, the Wallace–Reader’s Digest Funds launched the Literacy in Libraries Across America (LILAA) initiative in 1996. Of the fifteen participating libraries, five are the focus of the LILAA persistence study, which is being conducted by the Manpower Demonstration Research Corporation and the National Center for the Study of Adult Learning and Literacy. This interim …

Assessment, Reporting, And Accountability In English And Literacy Education : Finding The Signposts To The Future, Marion Meiers Dec 2002

Assessment, Reporting, And Accountability In English And Literacy Education : Finding The Signposts To The Future, Marion Meiers

Marion Meiers

The theme of this work is assessment, reporting and accountability. These three aspects of literacy assessment do not always sit comfortably together. The author's work is an extensive coverage of the interrelationship between such issues as the following: the public face of literacy assessment as portrayed in the media - a face that does not always reflect the reality of a complex process; and the needs of the diverse range of stakeholders involved in student assessment (students, parents, tax payers and politicians). The conclusion highlights the need for balance and diversity in a literacy assessment program.

The Road To Kenema And Other Poems, Samuel Hinton Dec 2002

The Road To Kenema And Other Poems, Samuel Hinton

Samuel Hinton

In The Road To Kenema Samuel Hinton presents a poignant, sometimes searing portrait of a man who stands with one foot planted firmly in the ageless soil of Africa, the other on the promise-filled shores of America. Balancing memories of his homeland with dreams of his adopted country, Hinton takes his reader on a journey that is often upsetting, but always engaging. In poems such as “The Road To Kenema, Sierra Leone,” “Grave -Digger, Freetown,” he weaves a rich tapestry of a people who celebrate the primal joy of life while the “Rapists,” “Song To Somali Dead,” and “War Child” …

The Role Of Reflection In Epistemological Change: Autobiography In Teacher Education, Sue Ellen Henry, Mary Bushnell Dec 2002

The Role Of Reflection In Epistemological Change: Autobiography In Teacher Education, Sue Ellen Henry, Mary Bushnell

Sue Ellen Henry

The authors promote the use of autobiography in the social foundations of education classroom as a means of connecting education to real life experiences, history, and fostering epistemological development of college students. Autobiography involves students’ awareness of the relationship between theory and lived experience. As a form of reflective knowing, autobiography may help students understand complex terms such as “learning,” “knowledge,” and “education” by exploring various contexts which influence such understandings. Reflective knowing explores some of the experiential and purposive contexts that influence knowledge creation. Intellectual maturity and self-awareness may arise from circumstances that can lead students to be more …

Constructing Intra And Interpersonal Competencies In A Context Of Lifelong Learning, Jennifer Bryce Dec 2002

Constructing Intra And Interpersonal Competencies In A Context Of Lifelong Learning, Jennifer Bryce

Dr Jennifer Bryce

The main aim of this thesis is to define the personal competencies that are needed when young people start work. This task has arisen in the context of a society where the nature of work changes frequently and there is a knowledge economy, with mounting tension between the information rich who are employed and affluent, and the information poor, who are not. Indeed, knowledge itself changes rapidly. The thesis is underpinned by a belief that it is more important to have the ability to learn than to possess pieces of technical knowledge. This interpretation of 'lifelong learning' is concerned with …

Hawthorne's Dating Problem In "The Scarlet Letter", Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe Dec 2002

Hawthorne's Dating Problem In "The Scarlet Letter", Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe

Charlie Sweet

This article explores the dating problem in Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel, The Scarlet Letter. In The Custom House, Hawthorne relates how he discovers several foolscap sheets written by a predecessor, Mr. Surveyor Pue, about Hester Prynne. These six sheets supposedly offer two types of accounts about Hester: aged persons, alive in the time of Pue and from whose oral testimony he had made up his narrative, remembered her, in their youth and those who had heard the tale from contemporary witnesses. A dating problem arises with the first group. Critics concur that historical documents place the events in The Scarlet Letter …

"Shiloh": A Mini-Casebook Approach To Upper-Division Literature Courses, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe

Charlie Sweet

Shows how the mini-casebook approach, with a few modifications, works well with upper-division writing assignments. Notes that a mini-casebook approach is nothing more than a self-published document including a primary work of literature, selected secondary sources on that work, and a selection of several specified topics on the primary source. Presents eight suggestions for implementing the mini-casebook approach
