Through partnership with two BPS high schools, school counseling graduate students engage in service learning and participate in organized experiences that meet school needs and are coordinated with graduate students' learning goals. School counseling students meet with BPS students individually and through classroom interventions to assist in the college/career process and prepare them for post-secondary educational options. This session will describe the partnership, including direct experiences shared by graduate students.

Critical Transitions In Faculty Learning: Helping Faculty Become Learning-Centered Teachers, Judith Longfield
Critical Transitions In Faculty Learning: Helping Faculty Become Learning-Centered Teachers, Judith Longfield
Judith Longfield
New methodologies of teaching and learning are changing the landscape of higher education. However, faculty are often unaware of the research and continue to rely heavily on lecture. During this interactive session, participants will learn how an extended series, known as the Teaching Academy, transformed instructors’ ideas about effective teaching and their classroom practices. In addition to learning about the impact of the Academy, participants will also consider ways to overcome barriers and implement this type of in-depth faculty development, which did not require additional funding, on their campuses.
Using Perceptual Maps For Career And College Counseling, Oscar T. Mcknight, Kerri Carmichael, Gregory Pollock
Using Perceptual Maps For Career And College Counseling, Oscar T. Mcknight, Kerri Carmichael, Gregory Pollock
Oscar T McKnight Ph.D.
Perceptual mapping is a modeling technique used in business to visually display relationships and perceptions of customers. In business, perceptual maps are often called product positioning maps. Conceptually, perceptual maps foster a better and deeper understanding of products and services in terms of public perception or actual outcomes. In short, marketers attempt to position products, product line, and brand or company type relative to their competition or competency. For counselors, this process facilitates open and honest discussion relative to personal expectations and goals. This presentation reviews how to interpret and use a Perceptual Map given a multiple variable (axis) system; …

Since 2010, the library at the Institute of Technology Tallaght (ITT Dublin) in South County Dublin, Republic of Ireland, has been developing a suite of interactive online information literacy tutorials covering research, referencing, plagiarism and core academic skills. These open educational resources (OERs) provide users with a vibrant, challenging learning environment and facilitate flexible, 24/7, independent learning. The learning objects are accessible via multiple delivery platforms and are available for reuse under Creative Commons licence via national and international teaching and learning repositories. This paper outlines the development of these OERs and how the creation of these learning tools has …

What Can Student Affairs Learn From Nielsen Audio? Benefits Of Using A Modified Arbitron Assessment In Higher Education, Oscar T. Mcknight Ph.D., Kerri Carmichael, Jonathan Locust Jr
What Can Student Affairs Learn From Nielsen Audio? Benefits Of Using A Modified Arbitron Assessment In Higher Education, Oscar T. Mcknight Ph.D., Kerri Carmichael, Jonathan Locust Jr
Oscar T McKnight Ph.D.
This presentation explores the history and evolution of an Arbitron assessment model (Nielsen Audio) when applied in higher education, specifically Student Affairs. Highlighted are the differences between traditional models of Student Affairs assessments and a modified Arbitron assessment. This new Student Affairs assessment model allows an institutional researcher to study student feedback minute to minute, day to day, week to week basis, etc. Discussed are the strengths and weaknesses of a Nielsen Audio model when applied to Student Affairs.

This presentation will provide an overview of work performed at the University of North Dakota with regards to the characterization of educational benefits from small spacecraft development efforts. We report on efforts to characterize benefits that ensued from participation for personal extracurricular enrichment, as part of a formal class (on project management), as part of multiple senior design projects, for independent study credit and for satisfying class project requirements. This assessment has been performed using a standard questionnaire for student research participation as well as custom questionnaires related to program focus areas. We have also analyzed student course performance, where …

Web-Based Student Peer Review: A Research Summary, Edward F. Gehringer
Web-Based Student Peer Review: A Research Summary, Edward F. Gehringer
Edward F Gehringer
Interest in Web-based peer-review systems dates back nearly 20 years. Systems were built to let students give feedback to other students, mainly to help them improve their writing. But students are not necessarily effective peer reviewers. Left to their own devices, they will submit cursory reviews, which are not very helpful to their peers. Techniques have been developed to improve the quality of reviews. Calibration is one such technique. Students are asked to assess samples of writing that have previously been assessed by experts. Students must submit an evaluation “close enough” to the experts’ before they are allowed to review …

The desire to create automatons is a familiar theme in human history, and during the age of the Enlightenment mechanical automatons became not only an “emblem of the cosmos”, but a symbol of man’s confidence that he would unlock nature’s greatest mysteries and fully harness her power. And yet only a century later, automatons had begun to represent human repression and servitude, a theme later picked up by writers of science fiction. Man’s confidence undeterred, the endgame of the modern scientific and technological mindset, or MSTM, seems to be increasingly coming into view with the rise of “information technology” in …

Modifying Gluten Free Food For Arabic Celiac Patients, Suad Fahad Alfuraih
Dr. Suad Fahad AlFuraih
Coping with Celiac Disease is so hard especially at the being months after been diagnosed. However, patients and families will easily get used to the challenge and live normally. As scientists, clinicians, moms, dads, nutritionists, teachers, dieticians, we often speak objectively, as in, this is the best thing for the whole world to do, yet we know that everyone is so very different--different in genetics, in environment, in habits--and we must look at the individual to determine what is truly best. According to a study will be shown in APPENDIX 1, done by Prof. Aljebreen and other Saudi colleagues at …

Mobile Modeling: Using And Creating Ipad And Ipod Apps To Shape Students With Disabilities, Carolyn Wicks, Amanda J. Rockinson-Szapkiw, Justin M. Tucker
Carolyn J. Wicks
Modeling is a technique that is often used to teach new skills to students with disabilities. Modeling is effective for teaching communication, social, and functional living skills to students with emotional, behavioral, and cognitive disorders (Werts, Caldwell, & Wolery, 1996). Video modeling and audio prompts can be as effective as live modeling (Murzynski & Bourret, 2007; Rehfeldt, Dahman, Young, Cherry, & Davis, 2003). In fact, some researchers have suggested that video modeling results in more rapid acquisition of skills than live modeling and may even be more generalizable across environments (Charlop & Milstein ,1989). With the introduction of mobile devises, …

Technology And Supervision: Implementing An Online 360 Evaluation, Oscar T. Mcknight, Gregory Pollock
Oscar T McKnight Ph.D.
Program introduces and discusses the process and implementation of an online 360-Degree evaluation for counseling interns. This evaluation process employs feedback from the counseling intern’s immediate work circle: for example, the supervisor; clients; staff; and referral sources. In addition, the counseling intern evaluates their own services. Learning outcomes include, but not limited to knowledge of how to construct a 360-Degree evaluation; how to interpret the data; how to present outcomes to the counseling intern; and the pros/cons of such an evaluation. Program introduces a special discussion on how to turn qualitative information into testable quantitative data.
