Transformations And Self Discovery; Stories Of Women Returning To Education, Catherine Stone, Sarah O' Shea

Dr Sarah E O' Shea

This book is written for educators and educational policy makers, students, prospective students, their families and their friends. It is the result of the combination of two separate pieces of research by the authors, conducted with a total of 37 students, each of whom was interviewed during 2006 about their experiences of being at university. From these 37 individual stories, seven have been chosen for this book as illustrations of the experiences of mature-age female students in higher education.

As readers will discover, each of these women has a unique story to tell, yet despite the differences in their situations, …

The Gender Gap In Asperger Syndrome: Where Are The Girls?, Lee Wilkinson Mar 2011

The Gender Gap In Asperger Syndrome: Where Are The Girls?, Lee Wilkinson

Lee A Wilkinson, PhD

Although there has been a dramatic increase in the recognition of autism spectrum disorders over the past decade, a significant gender gap has emerged in the diagnosis of milder forms, such as high functioning autism and Asperger syndrome. Statistics indicate that while boys are being referred and identified in greater numbers, this is not the case for girls. Girls are also diagnosed at later ages compared to boys. In this article, the author discusses possible explanations for the underidentification of girls with high functioning autism and Asperger syndrome. A case vignette is used to illustrate the gender differences relevant to …

Portrayal Of Disabilities In Caldecott Books, Tina Dyches, Mary Anne Prater, Jennifer Jenson Feb 2011

Portrayal Of Disabilities In Caldecott Books, Tina Dyches, Mary Anne Prater, Jennifer Jenson

Tina T. Dyches

We read all books that received the Caldecott Medal and Honor status awarded between 1938 and 2005 and found 11 that included a character with a disability. For each book we analyzed characterizations of those with disabilities, and generated tips for using the book to teach about disabilities. We argue that accurate portrayals of characters with disabilities, particularly the types of disabilities encountered most frequently by young children, are needed in award-winning picture books.

Two Way Teaching And Learning : Toward Culturally Reflective And Relevant Education, Gina Milgate, Nola Purdie, Hannah Bell

Gina C Milgate

Within the Education Revolution lies another, thus far quieter revolution that attempts to raise the profile and status of First Peoples' culture in the Australian cultural complex. This book addresses the coalface of this revolution where two cultures meet; in the classroom, the school, the community, and in both state and national education curricula. Contributors are mostly experienced Indigenous practitioners drawn from academia, the teaching profession and the community. They put the spotlight on policies and processes that serve to either facilitate an informed, respectful relationship in education, or act to reinforce cultural inequity and inequality. Policy implications that can …
