Evaluating The Influence Of Venue On Experiential, Project-Based Learning, Wayne Aho, Ed Wright, Jon Marvel

International Journal for Business Education

Experiential, project-based learning is widely endorsed as an effective pedagogy for enhancing the understanding of theory, increasing critical thinking skills, and preparing students for future roles as contributing employees. Likewise, the use of online classes at universities is becoming popular. A logical evolution of course venues would be the appearance of project-based, online courses. However, there is scant research on whether online, experiential learning is as effective as face-to-face courses. In this study, comparisons are made between online and face-to-face classes of a project-based, strategic management course at a regional university. No statistically significant differences were found in the course …

Governance And Board Member Identity In An Emerging Nonprofit Organization, Jeffrey J. Aulgur

Administrative Issues Journal

Organizational effectiveness is a term without a single definition about the nonprofit community; it is difficult to define, much less measure, due to the wide disparity in that community. Inconsistency in the sector leads to an array of hypotheses in the literature addressing organizational effectiveness. Through a comprehensive examination of a single nonprofit organization, this qualitative case study examines the gap between the expectations of board performance by the nonprofit organization’s senior leadership and the board members’ self-perception of their governance role. The dominant self-perception of the board of directors is that their value as a governing entity is in …

A Strategic Plan: Two-Year Effort Reaffirms Colby's Priorities And Sets Future Course, Stephen Collins

Colby Magazine

Individuals need to do it, and so do institutions. It is critically important, every once in a while, to pause and take stock. What are we doing? Is it the right thing? Does it still make sense, or has something fundamental changed? What are others doing? Is there a better way?

As Colby approached the 21st century, other transitions loomed for the institution as well, not least among them the first new president in more than 20 years. It was a perfect opportunity, trustees recognized, to assess what the College is all about and to think about its future.

Strategic Planning And The Principal-Agent Issue In Higher Education Leadership, Douglas Auld Jul 2010

Strategic Planning And The Principal-Agent Issue In Higher Education Leadership, Douglas Auld

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal

Strategic planning is well entrenched in colleges and universities around the globe. It is not only essential for effective resource allocation but in some jurisdictions, legislation requires that strategic plans be submitted to government as part of the funding approval process. The difficulties associated with strategic planning and indeed planning in general in colleges and universities has not gone unexplored. It is our contention and the thesis of this paper that the failure to develop and execute strategic plans flows from the distinctive aspects of the principal-agent framework within which many higher education institutions work. Understanding and responding to the …

Rural Community Input To School District Strategic Planning: An Action Research Model Using Focus Groups, Brent L. Winand, Carla Edlefson

The Rural Educator

A rural superintendent used action research principles in conducting a series of focus groups with community members, students, and staff. The focus group data informed strategic planning. At the end of a carefully designed process, district administrators found more agreement among residents than they had expected. Community members were grateful for the opportunity to participate, and the district’s strategic plan contained important goals that would not have been recognized without community input. Administrators believed conducting the focus groups themselves brought more benefit than if they had hired a consultant, because of the interaction with community members. The result was a …
