Student Athletic Therapists' Knowledge Of Pain-Relieving Medications: A Nationwide Study, Jackie Vandertuin, Dalya Abdulla, Stephanie Lowther, Joshua Collins
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: Misuse of pain-relieving medications (PRMs), including opioids, is high among injured athletes. Athletes are increasingly relying on PRMs and as a result, it is likely that student athletic therapists (SATs) have managed athletes who have misused PRMs and may have potentially missed important symptoms placing athletes in harm. While dispensing PRMs is not within the scope of practice of the SAT, recognition and referral are. Previous research has found that SATs feel ill prepared to recognize PRM misuse and feel tremendous pressure to provide correct health information to the athlete. The purpose of this study was to expand on …
Expedited Recovery Pain Management Pathway For Minimally Invasive Repair Of Pectus Excavatum (Mirpe), Maria E. Tecos, Jessica Goeller, Robert Cusick, Stephen Raynor
Expedited Recovery Pain Management Pathway For Minimally Invasive Repair Of Pectus Excavatum (Mirpe), Maria E. Tecos, Jessica Goeller, Robert Cusick, Stephen Raynor
Graduate Medical Education Research Journal
Introduction: Pectus Excavatum (PEX) is the most common anterior chest wall deformity. While minimally invasive repair of pectus excavatum (MIRPE) has improved perioperative outcomes, there continue to be opportunities to optimize postoperative pain management and reduce length of stay (LOS). We compared the impact of a multimodal expedited protocol utilizing a combination of systemic and regional analgesia (with single shot paravertebral truncal blocks), along with coping techniques (such as meditation), and physical therapy, with systemic analgesia on LOS and opioid requirements.
Methods: 51 patients underwent MIRPE with an expedited recovery protocol in comparison with 112 historical control patients at a …
Ce Requirements For Michigan Dental Licensure, Andrea Sunderman
Ce Requirements For Michigan Dental Licensure, Andrea Sunderman
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
The distribution of mandated topics for the 60 hours of CE for dentists and 36 hours for RDHs and RDAs required for each three-year licensure period is presented in this graphic. The ADA, AGD, an accredited dental school, or the Michigan Board of Dentistry must approve courses. The Michigan Dental Association provides access to CE programs necessary for dentists and members of their teams to meet these requirements.
An Objective Structured Clinical Examination Case For Opioid Management: Standardized Patient Ratings Of Communication Skills As A Predictor Of Systems-Based Practice Scores, Heidi Kenaga, Tsveti Markova, R. Brent Stansfield, Sarwan Kumar, Pierre Morris
An Objective Structured Clinical Examination Case For Opioid Management: Standardized Patient Ratings Of Communication Skills As A Predictor Of Systems-Based Practice Scores, Heidi Kenaga, Tsveti Markova, R. Brent Stansfield, Sarwan Kumar, Pierre Morris
Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews
The Wayne State University Office of Graduate Medical Education (WSUGME) uses an objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) to assess its programs’ contribution to enhancing residents’ communication skills. In response to revisions in Michigan’s opioid-prescribing mandates in 2017, WSUGME developed a pain management case in collaboration with faculty and the Wayne State University School of Medicine to educate residents about these mandates while gauging their skills in Systems-Based Practice (SBP), an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Core Competency. This study examined whether resident OSCE performance predicted year-end milestones scores in SBP1 (coordinates patient care within various health care delivery settings), …
How Does The 2020 Revised Definition Of Pain Impact Nursing Practice?, Olivia Sonneborn, Annie Williams
How Does The 2020 Revised Definition Of Pain Impact Nursing Practice?, Olivia Sonneborn, Annie Williams
Journal of Perioperative Nursing
The widely used and acknowledged universal definition of pain developed by the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) in 1979 has been revised in 2020. The 2020 IASP definition states pain is ‘an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with, or resembling that associated with, actual or potential tissue damage’. The 2020 IASP definition of pain reinforces the importance for nurses to have an understanding of the pathophysiology of pain and highlights the crucial role pain assessment plays in overall pain management, which nurses are pivotal in driving and delivering.
