The Journal of Advancing Education Practice

Colleges and universities struggle with declining program completion rates among graduate students. While the attrition rate of graduate students declined over the last five years in the United States, the issue of graduate student persistence continues to be challenging. This study identifies and explores reported characteristics: expectations, motivation, self-discipline, emotional intelligence, and passion for learning. Graduate students studying educational leadership conducted a qualitative inquiry to approach theoretical comprehension of the intrinsic motivations, expectations, and major attributes of successful graduate students. Examining these areas provides a deeper understanding of success achieved by graduate students.

Using A Crosswalk To Organize The Literature Review, Shirley M. Matteson, Sheri L. Warren

The Qualitative Report

A literature crosswalk is a valuable tool for researchers, whether novice or seasoned scholars, that can be used in organizing and synthesizing existing literature. This article provides practical advice for creating a literature crosswalk and how to use the tool to develop a literature review. Benefits of using a literature crosswalk include organizing a great deal of information in an easily searchable format, developing deeper understanding of the literature, and finding trends across multiple research studies in regard to methodology, theories used, types of participants, settings, and so forth.

Entering A Community Of Writers: The Writing Center, Doctoral Students, And Going Public With Scholarly Writing, Sara Winstead Fry, Melissa Keith, Jennifer Gardner, Amanda Bremner Gilbert, Amanda Carmona, Sabrina Schroeder, Audrey Kleinsasser

The Qualitative Report

In addition to taking advanced courses, graduate students navigate a potentially challenging transition of learning to write for publication. We, the authors, explored solutions to this transition with a study designed to explore the research questions: How does a systematic effort to help doctoral students enter a community of writers via writing center collaboration influence doctoral students’: (1) proficiency with academic writing, (2) writing apprehension, (3) self-efficacy as writers, and (4) comfort with “going public” with their writing? We used a collaborative, multi-layered self-study research approach because it allowed us to focus on critical examination of teaching practices that are …

Building Community In An Online Graduate Program: Exploring The Role Of An In-Person Orientation, Sharla Berry Jul 2018

Building Community In An Online Graduate Program: Exploring The Role Of An In-Person Orientation, Sharla Berry

The Qualitative Report

Orientations help students transition into academic programs. At orientation, students learn how to navigate the university, and access support services, and build rapport with faculty, staff and other students. Few studies have explored the role of orientation in online programs. This qualitative case study explores the ways in which a three-day, in-person orientation impacted students’ sense of community in one online graduate program. Findings indicate that providing online students with unstructured, in-person opportunities for interaction helped them develop a sense of community.

Locating Community Action Outreach Projects In The Scholarship Of Media Literacy Pedagogy, Heather Crandall

Journal of Media Literacy Education

This paper compares frameworks in recent critical media literacy scholarship with trends found in eight semesters of media literacy community action outreach assignments to explore how these frameworks can function as curricular tools for media literacy practitioners. Besides potential tools for media literacy pedagogy, this examination of recent literature uncovers new considerations and directions for the field of media literacy education. These include tensions present in the practice of teaching from a critical perspective, observations about student use of newer technologies for social change, and concerns to include in critical media literacy literature.

Avoiding The A.B.D. Abyss: A Grounded Theory Study Of A Dissertation-Focused Course For Doctoral Students In An Educational Leadership Program, Leslie Ann Locke, Melanie Boyle

The Qualitative Report

More than half of all graduate students drop out before graduation. Doctoral students often become mired in the “all but dissertation” (ABD) phase of the process. This grounded theory study focused on the perceptions and experiences of doctoral students in an educational leadership program, who were ABD, regarding their participation in a dissertation-focused intensive writing course called the Dissertation Boot Camp (DBC). Findings revealed participants had particular challenges with time, writing, and advisement. The DBC attended to many of these challenges by providing time, structure, encouragement, and support. Results of the study led to the development of a conceptual framework, …

A New University Supervisor: Their Experiences And Enrichment, Lane Andrew

Essays in Education

For various reasons, graduate students often hold the position of university supervisor. Because this population graduates every few years, first time supervisors are relatively common. In this qualitative case study, I explore the experiences of one graduate student who has just completed a supervisory assignment for the first time. Instead of focusing on the interpersonal dynamics of the supervisor’s experiences, the results of this study focus on the supervisor’s experiences of being in a position of authority, applying academic knowledge to practice, and understanding and interpreting professional standards into the context of the classroom. Another aspect that is explored is …
