Individual-Level And Socio-Contextual Influences On Body Mass Index And Achievement In Adolescence To Young Adulthood, Mellissa S. Gordon

Research suggests there are factors that may exacerbate or otherwise serve as a protective factor for the effects being overweight. This study explores the association between BMI and adolescent’s academic achievement, and the moderating effects of individual-level (e.g., race/ethnicity) and socio-contextual factors (e.g., economic disadvantage) on this association. Furthermore, research suggests that overweight adolescents are at an increased risk of becoming overweight adults. As such, other developmental outcomes may be impacted as adolescents mature into young adulthood. Given this likelihood, the association between BMI and achievement over time was also tested. Chronologic definitions of adolescence and adolescent sub-stages vary throughout the literature. Definitions for adolescence are important because they inform the construction and implementation of adolescent research and program development. This article identifies commonly used chronologic parameters for adolescence, explores the developmental theory contributing to the understanding of adolescent chronology and posits a developmentally consistent definition of this critical transitional phase as: “early adolescence” 11-13 years, “adolescence” 14-17 years, and “young adulthood” 18-25 years. Food Insecurity Challenge To Families In The Greater Chattanooga Area: The Case Of The Food Bank, Samantha K. Elliott, Irina Khmelko, Richard Beeland

This paper discusses food insecurity challenges to families in the Greater Chattanooga Area and factors that contribute to combating the challenge. Specifically, the paper places regional developments in a national context and analyzes the multiple roles of regional food banks in this process. Food banks have shifted focus from providing foods with sufficient caloric intake to also ensuring that they are providing food with sufficient nutritional value. We identify several factors that contribute to this change, including federal policy changes, economic fluctuations, the nutrition initiative, and organizational changes from the umbrella organization, Feeding America. Functional assessment is embedded in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) (1997) and Positive Behavioral Supports (PBS) (Horner & Carr, 1997). While the process of functional assessment has helped many students become more successful in the educational setting, it is time to take a deeper look at those conditions from which behaviors originate. Such conditions, referred to in this article as setting conditions, often serve to initiate and sustain inappropriate behaviors that are the focus of the functional assessment. The current study aimed to explore the relationships between parental involvement during adolescence on sexual behaviors among college students. Research has shown that parental involvement decreases as students move from high school to college, but the impact that parents had on their students while in high school continues into college. Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy An Effective Treatment For Autism? A Review, Daniel Dunleavy, Bruce A. Thyer

Objectives: We review outcome studies regarding the effectiveness of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) for Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Method: Studies were identified through electronic bibliographic databases and manual searches of article reference lists. Results: A total of 8 studies met eligibility criteria, consisting of three randomized controlled trials (RCTs), one quasi-experimental study involving a comparison group, two pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest studies, and two single-system designs. Studies reviewed did not offer credible evidence to suggest that HBOT is an effective treatment for autism. Conclusion: It is premature to call HBOT an effective treatment for Autism and ASD.
