Eku Libraries And The Nova Program: Collaborating To Bring Information Literacy To First Year Students, Brad Marcum
Eku Libraries And The Nova Program: Collaborating To Bring Information Literacy To First Year Students, Brad Marcum
The Southeastern Librarian
During the fall semester of 2003, Eastern Kentucky University libraries and the NOVA program for first year students initiated a collaborative effort aimed at achieving two goals: 1) better prepare the one hundred students selected to participate in the NOVA program for their career at EKU, and 2) provide those students with information literacy skills needed to function as discriminating consumers of information throughout their lives.
This article will discuss the creation and outcomes of our first year of collaboration. It will touch on our positive experiences and on some of the challenges EKU librarians encountered as we worked with …
Distance Learning Or Traditional Classroom Learning Preference Amongst Graduate Level College Students: A Case Study, Angela Criscoe
Distance Learning Or Traditional Classroom Learning Preference Amongst Graduate Level College Students: A Case Study, Angela Criscoe
The Corinthian
This research is a case study of distance learning performed at Georgia College & State University in the fall of 2004. In this study a survey was given to 16 students that were currently taking a masters accounting course via the distance learning format. The survey included questions that would help determine if graduate students preferred traditional courses to distance learning courses. The results indicated that students do prefer traditional courses and that there is no significant difference between the learning format preferred between males and females. Further results suggest instructor effectiveness with technology and may warrant to further research …

The parameters for this study are, broadly, doctoral education and, specifically, one doctoral course. However, extrapolations beyond these lenses are ventured.
Distance Learners: Not Necessarily Distant, Rachel Viggiano
Distance Learners: Not Necessarily Distant, Rachel Viggiano
The Southeastern Librarian
The following paper was presented at the 2002 SELA/South Carolina Library Association Joint Conference in Charleston, South Carolina, as part of the “New Voices” program, sponsored by the University and College Libraries Section (UCLS) of SELA. The Southeastern Librarian is pleased to reprint the paper in its entirety.
The purpose of this paper is to examine many of the issues involved in providing library services to distance learners, and to discuss the growing overlap of services for traditional on-campus students and distance learners. Is the distinction between the two groups enough to merit a separation of services, or should libraries …
Managing A Ripple In The New Wave Of Education Initiatives: Validity Of Assessment, Judson C. Faurer
Managing A Ripple In The New Wave Of Education Initiatives: Validity Of Assessment, Judson C. Faurer
Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology
With the increased attention to, and interest in, Distance Education/Online courses by academic institutions, students, and faculty, there is a concomitant increase in the difficulty of assessing the integrity of the assignments produced by students. Academic institutions see the opportunity for increased enrollment without an increase in campus facilities. Students appreciate the flexibility in scheduling and the self-paced opportunity while faculty may have mixed feeling about the drawn out interaction with and between students and the lack of assurance that assignments submitted are truly the work of the respective student. Personal experience and discussion with students and other faculty validates …
