Technological and pedagogical advances in distance education have accentuated the necessity for higher education to keep pace regarding institutional infrastructures. Each infrastructure—driven by a common mission to provide quality learning—interprets quality according to standards established by various governmental and accrediting entities. Staying ahead of the technological and pedagogical changes have been challenging for many public higher education institutions, which are continuing to struggle with online course design and delivery modes (Suttle, 2010). Online universities, however, have aggressively and strategically responded to technological and pedagogical shifts across institutional, departmental, program, and course levels according to their institutional mission, vision, and core …

Implications Of Out-Of-Class Engagement: Exploring The Experience Of Obu Students, Neal Ellis

In addition to learning, the college experience involves building relationships with peers and university faculty. For many students, interactions with faculty take place only in the classroom. For students at small liberal arts colleges, though, students and faculty often meet serendipitously both on and off campus. This study focuses on the unplanned interactions that occur between students and faculty. Data obtained from an interview, a focus group, and a campus-wide survey indicate that students who interact with their professors out-of-class (OOC) gain more value from their college experience and enjoy greater academic success than students who meet their professors in …

Elementary Principals’ Role In Science Instruction, Patricia Casey, Karen Dunlap, Kristen Brown, Michele Davison
Administrative Issues Journal
This study explores the role elementary school principals play in science education. Specifically, the study employed an online survey of 16 elementary school principals at high-performing campuses in North Texas to explore their perceptions of how they influenced science education on their campuses. The survey used a combination of Likert-type rating scale items and open-ended questions. Responses from elementary principals suggest that the important components of instructional leadership for science included a) collaboration with teachers, b) changing teaching assignments, and c) teacher motivation.
Exploring The Effects Of Managerial Ownership On The Decision To Go Private: A Behavioral Agency Model Approach, Alix Valenti, Marguerite Schneider
Exploring The Effects Of Managerial Ownership On The Decision To Go Private: A Behavioral Agency Model Approach, Alix Valenti, Marguerite Schneider
Administrative Issues Journal
This paper utilizes the behavioral agency model to investigate why many formerly public companies have been converted to privately held corporations. Using a matched pairs sample and categorical binary regression, and controlling for effects found in previous studies, we explore how the equity ownership of those entrusted to manage firms, the firms’ executives, might affect their perceptions of the risks of going private and might therefore affect the decision to take a company private. This study complements prior research examining the predictors of public to private transactions and illustrates how behavioral agency theory can provide insight into a major decision …
Symbolic Interactionism And Moral Hazards In Higher Education, Louella Moore
Symbolic Interactionism And Moral Hazards In Higher Education, Louella Moore
Administrative Issues Journal
Public colleges and universities today are more than institutions of academic study. They play a role in the economic and social life of their communities by engaging in partnerships aimed at enhancing their scope and brand image. This paper suggests these partnered activities do more than just manage costs and replace state support during economic downturns; the activities are also central to managing the image and political scope of the institution. This paper presents an exploratory, multi-disciplinary examination of the market forces and potential moral hazards inherent in hybrid public/private partnerships in higher education. Agency and symbolic interaction concepts are …

Enhancement Of Entrepreneurial Leadership: A Case Focusing On A Model Of Successful Conflict Management Skills, Anita Leffel, Cory Hallam, John Darling

The purpose of this paper is to present a case study focusing on a new technology start-up firm, founded by two graduate students, an engineer and a business major, who met during their university studies. The case is timely, in that only ten percent of new product introductions result in a profitable business. The causes of failure are numerous and include the following: the market may create failure; inadequate funding and capitalization; and competition from established enterprises. Several research studies also point to rising indications of interfunctional conflict in high technology companies. One reason may be that, today, management teams …

After the September 11 terrorist attacks on the U.S., the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States recommended that The TSA and the Congress give priority attention to improving the ability of screening checkpoints to detect explosives on passengers. As the legality of the TSA’s full-body scanner program continues to be debated, the federal government is investigating the next generation of airport screening technology. The privacy debate centers on the Department of Homeland Security’s use of full-body scanners to screen passengers at the nation’s major airports.

The Importance Of Incorporating Personal Finance Objectives In The College Classroom, Teri G. Allen
The Importance Of Incorporating Personal Finance Objectives In The College Classroom, Teri G. Allen
Administrative Issues Journal
It has been well documented that many college students have an alarmingly low level of financial literacy. These students have insufficient knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors relating to personal financial management. The recent economic crisis further illustrated that many young adults are not financially prepared to cope with the financial reality of being selfsufficient. Many states have implemented requirements for personal finance education in high school, and some colleges have included personal finance as a general-education requirement. However, studies have shown that levels of awareness of personal finance issues still vary greatly by major, student motivation, and financial background. This paper …
Bring Your Own Technology: A Public School Technology Policy Case Study, Cynthia Bauter
Bring Your Own Technology: A Public School Technology Policy Case Study, Cynthia Bauter
Administrative Issues Journal
This case study examines a large Texas school district that implemented a “bring your own technology” (BYOT) technology policy. The study considers teachers’, administrators’, and students’ issues and challenges as a result of the implementation. The study finds that although this policy is aligned with national and state technology integration standards for education, it is problematic in reality. Questions are raised about equity and adequacy, the need for professional development to deal with implementation, and the intention versus the reality of BYOT policies.

Seizing Opportunities Moment By Moment: The Effects Of An 8-Week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Course On Personal Epistemological Beliefs And Implications For Academic Program Administration, Carrie J. Boden-Mcgill, Mazen Homound
Administrative Issues Journal
Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) courses that teach individuals to “live in the present moment” have been shown to improve health and well-being; however, there seems to be very little research into how MBSR may affect the way we think about the nature of knowledge, also known as epistemology. The researchers developed this study in an effort to determine if MBSR techniques would have an impact on personal epistemological beliefs and the implications for academic program administration. Though this study is currently a pilot study, early results seem to indicate a statistically significant change in the area of “Quick Learning.” This …
Designing Effective Group Projects: Applying Student Feedback To Project Design, Apryl Brodersen
Designing Effective Group Projects: Applying Student Feedback To Project Design, Apryl Brodersen
Administrative Issues Journal
By integrating group projects into the curriculum, educators can seize the opportunity to provide students not only with marketable skills, but the chance to deepening their understanding of a given topic or subject matter by learning from one another. Designing an effective group project, however, is a challenging task. In the current paper, I utilize results from a student survey on characteristics of effective groups to design an applied group project and describe six key lessons learned by incorporating student feedback into group project design.
The Balanced Scorecard And Improvement Performance In Nonprofit Organizations, Jeffrey J. Aulgur
The Balanced Scorecard And Improvement Performance In Nonprofit Organizations, Jeffrey J. Aulgur
Administrative Issues Journal
Nonprofit executives and board members rate measurement of performance as one of three key organizational concerns. The academic literature, however, does not identify a dominant methodology for organizational effectiveness and governance. The intent of the Balanced Scorecard approach to organizational strategic planning is to translate the vision and strategy into performance measures. By placing the customer domain and the mission at the top of the Balanced Scorecard, the organization is identifying accountability between itself and society. The Balanced Scorecard has proven successful in nonprofit organizations due to its ability to align intangible assets to strategy. Successful outcomes are unlikely if …

Personal Or School? Factors That Influence A Teacher’S Intentions Of Remaining Or Leaving The Profession, Carrie J. Boden-Mcgill, Amy Sedivy-Benton
Administrative Issues Journal
Teacher turnover is costly in its financial implications and negative impact on student learning. Recent studies demonstrate that many teachers choose to transfer to a more preferable work setting or leave the field. By employing a nested design using Hierarchal Linear Modeling data from the most recent complete Schools and Staffing Survey 2007-2008 (SASS) by NCES, the researchers found indications that school-level contextual factors, such as teacher influence on school, teacher perception of control, and teacher perceived support play a significant role in teachers’ intentions to leave or remain in the field. An understanding of these factors allows policymakers and …

Faculty Senate: Models, Myths, And Minutia, Dana Gray, Maryrose Hart
Administrative Issues Journal
This paper reviews the research literature about the structure, roles, and models of faculty senate including roles of faculty senate in academic and non-academic issues, the difference in faculty voice and influence in shared governance, and identified models of faculty senate purpose. The authors of this concept paper propose a three-step strategic process for faculty to analyze the current profile of their respective faculty senates, determine the desired state of their senates, and develop a plan for transition. Larger issues such as what does effectiveness mean are beyond the scope of this paper. This paper focuses on what are the …

The purpose of this study was to examine the annual revenue received by United States public community college foundations from 2008-2009 in relation to selected variables associated with successful foundation performance. This study replicated and expanded upon the work of Dr. Sharon McEntee Carrier a decade earlier. Linear regression analysis was used to collect descriptive statistics about the frequencies, central tendencies, and distribution of the data. The researchers used linear regression and analysis of variances (ANOVA) to study the relationship between revenue gained in connection with private giving and college foundation operations for fiscal year 2008-2009, the degree to which …
Monitoring Students And Enforcing Information Technology Use Policies In Universities, Jimmy D. Speers
Monitoring Students And Enforcing Information Technology Use Policies In Universities, Jimmy D. Speers
Administrative Issues Journal
This paper presents the results of an Internet survey of university Information Technology (IT) managers on the use/abuse of IT resources by a university’s students. The survey sought data on university size, public/private organization, whether there were policies in place on acceptable use of IT resources, possible student use and actions, and finally how IT resources were monitored if they were monitored. Results revealed that most universities had policies on the proper use of IT resources but were very unlikely to monitor use/abuse of IT resources mainly due to a lack of personnel. Some potential abuses were identified and respondents …

Leading Professional Learning Communities Toward Efficacy, Laura S. Witherington
Administrative Issues Journal
As Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), defined by DuFour et al (2008), continue to sweep into schools across the nation, school administrators need the tools to assess the productivity of the teachers’ collaborative teams. PLCs provide the structure for teachers to analyze student achievement data and design common formative assessments. The PLC Efficacy Rubric discussed in this presentation was developed for use in the College Ready in Mathematics and Physics Partnership grant funded by the National Science Foundation to provide school administrators the tools to evaluate teachers’ collaborative work and guide them to increased success. This presentation introduces the five indicators …
