Writing As A Mode Of Teaching And Learning In Secondary Discipline-Based Art Education, Julie Raines

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This study examines the use of writing in art education and its possibilities for use in the four disciplines of DBAE. Teacher attitudes and associated behaviors with regard to these and related topics are assessed. It was expected that some teachers would favor a creativity- or art production-centered approach to the teaching of art over DBAE. Because writing can be viewed as an academic mode of learning, some apprehension was also expected from those who favor creativity and art production. Despite teachers’ lack of training in DBAE disciplines other than art production and in using writing in the art room, …

Much of the literature pertaining to the department chair is derived from speeches, journal articles and how-to books and is anecdotal in nature (Creswell, Wheeler, Seagren, Egly, & Beyer, 1990; Gmelch, Burns, Carroll, Harris & Wentz; 1992; Gmelch, Carroll, Seedorf & Wentz, …

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Since the U.S. Supreme Court's controversial and historic 1988 Hazelwood School District v. Kuhlmeier decision, the debate over whether high school newspapers should have First Amendment protection and rights has been waged from one end of the country to the other. Many principals hailed the decision as giving school administrators the responsibility they should have by putting "the high school press in its proper relationship with principals" (Dickson, "How Advisers View" 2). Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The junior high school was created in the early 1900's from the eight year elementary or grammar school and a four year high school. At that time administrators and teachers believed that the needs of the middle year students were being overlooked (Jackson, 1986). The current concept of middle schools began developing in the late 1950's and was being implemented in 1963 (Kindred, Wolotkiewicz, Mickelson, & Coplein, 1981). This reorganization of the middle/junior high school started in West Virginia in the late 1970's. Home economics educators in the state wanted to provide input into the content of these new programs, …
