Application For Sabbatical Leave And Sabbatical Report, Amy F. Penne

I plan to use my sabbatical to 1) renew myself professionally through a series of teacher's retreats with Parker Palmer at his Center for Courage and Renewal, as well as a conference trip to Indianapolis for the Conference on College Composition and Communication; and 2) study with Palmer and through his Center to eventually become a "Circles of Trust" facilitator (defined later in this proposal). My sabbatical is designed to reconnect who I am with what I do; I need this sabbatical to reclaim my original passion for the teaching of writing and the teaching of writers. My retreat with …

As a professor and social worker, I'd been intrigued by Jane Addams for years. She is routinely discussed in introductory social work and sociology texts as a significant historical figure. She has been described as a selfless social reformer and as a catalyst in the American settlement house movement. I always felt that she deserved far more attention than she received in the texts- and from our students. I used my spring 2011 sabbatical leave to accomplish two different but complementary goals-engaging in research to acquire a greater depth of knowledge of Addams and also developing a strategy for how …

Documentation is the process of record-keeping and collection of children's work at different stages of development and of making children's thinking and learning visible. Documentation is done for a variety of purposes such as guiding instruction, assessment of development, studying pedagogy, and communicating with others. Documentation (sometimes called "pedagogical documentation") guides instruction by focusing teachers on what children know, what they are interested in, and providing clues as to the best ways to reach and teach individuals and groups of children. Assessing the development of individual children is probably one of the most common uses of documentation. Documentation gives us …

Since both of my grandmothers were teachers in one-room schools and both my mother and my father attended one-room schools through the eighth grade, I grew up listening to stories about what it was like to teach and to go to school in these rural educational settings. I think it was these stories, along with the knowledge that I would be carrying on a family tradition, that largely motivated me to choose teaching as my profession. And I've always felt that in some way I was doing that--continuing the work that my grandmothers did and continuing the tradition of small-community …

As a product of the community college myself, I have long been interested in the factors that effect student persistence - in what helps a community college student stay in college. As a Parkland faculty member, I have been interested in developing programs and activities that would improve student persistence. Out of this interest, ORN 101 was created and implemented at Parkland in 1992. ORN 101 (renamed PSY 109 in 2004) is an orientation to college course which includes topics such as goal setting, educational planning, and career and personal development. In the fall of 1993, I began my doctoral …

I plan to visit other colleges, agriculture businesses, and various other agriculture entities to help update my knowledge and learn about their contribution to the agriculture industry. I have found my schedule of responsibilities at Parkland has kept me so busy that it has been very difficult to adequately keep up to date in our fast changing industry. This leave would allow me to greatly improve my knowledge base for teaching and ultimately my future students will have a better opportunity to learn.

My sabbatical work was accomplished during the 1999-2000 academic year. The two general goals to be achieved were, first, to upgrade my computer skills and second, to improve the interactivity of our online speech course.

I will explore alternative methods for teaching developmental students. Traditional methods of teaching grammar and writing have already failed most of these students. We cannot offer them the same material in the same way without expecting the same results. I will look at the current research of various learning styles and multiple intelligences, and adapt my teaching methods accordingly. I want to rethink what my colleagues and I do in the classroom and find ways to help our students be more successful, as students, as learners, and as future contributors in the work force. As a tangible result of my …

I propose to investigate the ways that basic English composition is taught at various colleges throughout the country and to use my findings to design a Parkland-specific English 101 instructional model that integrates composition into some of our transfer and career programs, so that students would write about topics relevant to their goals while enhancing their understanding of the academic discipline they're writing about. My research would involve the League for Innovation community colleges, Alverno College, Macomb Community College, the University of Illinois at Urbana, and the National Council of Teachers of English.

The goal of my Spring 1996 sabbatical leave was to bring international content into the courses in the Parkland College Literature Program. I undertook the following projects:
- To design an international studies concentration for students in the Liberal Arts Program
- To review and read extensively in the literature of Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East
- To develop a course in non-western world literature which would meet the nonwestern humanities requirement for the LAS degree
- To prepare bibliographic materials and identify world literature selections to use as supplementary texts in existing literature courses

I wish to study the teaching of participatory democracy in entry level political science courses - Introduction to Political Science and American National Government. I believe that many Americans are distrustful of their elected leaders and cynical toward their governmental institutions. Signs of this malaise are declining voter turnouts, the success of negative campaigning ads, and the low level of discourse on talk radio shows. These conditions, if lasting, undermine democratic government's reliance on citizen participation.
Faculty who teach political science in the most democratic of higher learning institutions, the community colleges, should, I feel, analyze these factors to determine …

I'd like to learn "Mathematica." "Mathematica" is probably the most~ powerful mathematics software available. It was developed and continues to be upgraded at Wolfram Research in Champaign. The U. of I. as well as many colleges and universities across the nation teach some sections of their calculus courses with "Mathematica." Also, several of the high schools in our district have students enrolled in "Calculus with Mathematica" through a distance learning program at the U. of I.

The following weaknesses are in the part-time teaGhing area of the CCS Program:
- 2 to 5 new part-time teachers are hired each year
- Most part-time teachers have no college level teaching experience
- No part-time teachers with college comprehension teaching experience
- No part-time teachers with study skills teaching experience
- An annual teacher turnover with no trained replacements
- There is limited time available to train staff adequately.
I propose to research, design, and videotape 20 to 25 teacher training videos for all three developmental levels of CCS including, but not limited to, reading comprehension methods and study skills. Instructional videos are a …

I intend to study those aspects of planetarium education of which, at the time of the sabbatical, the college most urgently needs an understanding. I intend to do whatever is necessary to enable the Parkland Planetarium to commence successful operations in 1987. I also wish to attend meetings of those professional planetarium societies in which I hold membership, ·and to participate in two planetarium education workshops.
