POD Quarterly is a publication of the Professional and Organizational Development (POD) Network in Higher Education. POD is an association of people bound together by an interest in improving higher education through faculty, instructional, and organizational development activities and programs. The Network was created in 1976 so that those who share common interests and concerns could exchange information, ideas, and resources; enhance professional skills; debate issues and strategies; and contemplate and plan for the future. Diagnostic Testing In Mathematics, David L. Outcalt

High school graduates have been demonstrating less skills in mathematics at the same time that students entering colleges and universities need to have more of those skills to be able to succeed in an increasing variety of disciplines. One way to ease that problem is to develop criterion-referenced diagnostic tests together with remediation keyed to the results of such tests. Diagnostic tests of that type contrast with norm-referenced tests in that they provide a profile of strengths and weaknesses in each essential topic for every student.
