Closing The Loop With Heds: Information Literacy Program Assessment, Melissa Jadlos

The presentation discusses the Research Practices Survey tool from the Higher Education Data Sharing consortium (HEDS). St. John Fisher College, Lavery Library has worked with the survey on and off since 2008. Librarians using HEDS data to close the loop and modify teaching practices have increased scores by up to 60%. Currently, Lavery Library is using the Research Practices Survey in a longitudinal administration to determine persistence of information literacy skills and pinpoint areas of further instruction and/or assessment.

The poster will describe an innovative method for tracking library statistics and mapping them to Strategic Plans and Learning Goals. In addition to standard library statistics, previously untracked contributions are documented, such as internal projects and professional development. Using Google Forms, library interactions are collected in one place and turned into value statements. Using Twitter, the library is able to connect these value statements to the library strategic plan by creating a hashtag for each strategic goal. Working together, faculty and staff at a liberal arts college discovered that putting a twist in the assessment loop through interdepartmental collaborations led to more relevant and useful information about how students are learning at their college. Learn practical methods for sharing measures, conveying results, and using the findings to engage stakeholders and promote a college-wide culture of assessment. The presentation will include an exploration of successful collaborations between academic and student support departments, a discussion of Best Practices, and descriptions of practical tools to use that help facilitate interdepartmental work.

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to share St John Fisher College Library's marketing approach to recruiting and retention of parents within the higher education community. Design/methodology/approach - The objectives of this paper are achieved by connecting local experiences with other parent initiatives on university campuses throughout the country. The paper takes the approach of addressing marketing strategies for recruitment and retention of parents, while also including opportunities for these strategies to be applied. First-year programs assist new students in adapting to college life, developing skills for academic success and increasing retention. The Freshmen Seminar course at St. John Fisher College is such a course, taught by college faculty and staff with collaboration from departments across campus. Participants will experience a stand-alone lesson created by the college archivist with the objective of identifying a baseline assessment of critical thinking skills. Presented as a complete package from learning objectives to assessment tools, the class session is purposely designed to be easy to replicated.
