Science Notes - Support Program For Instructional Competency In Astronomy, Darrel Hoff Jan 1989

Science Notes - Support Program For Instructional Competency In Astronomy, Darrel Hoff

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Astronomy education lacks a unified, national support program. The nation's 1,200-1,600 high school astronomy teachers are generally isolated from their peers. As many as 7,000 other teachers would like to develop astronomy courses but cannot find suitable materials. Approximately 20 percent of a typical earth science course is astronomy, and studies show earth science teachers generally have weak astronomy backgrounds. Astronomy resources for elementary grades exist, but, as in earth science, teacher preparation is often insufficient. To remedy these problems a plan, called Project SPICA, has been developed by the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA).

Editor's Corner - On The Importance Of High School Biology: A Note From The Assistant Editor For Biology, Norris M. Durham

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Biology is life: human life, animal life, plant life, protozoan life. Its importance should never be underestimated! Why, then, are there so many students entering my university courses with no knowledge of high school biology whatsoever? It is unthinkable that a person can complete high school without having had a course in the life science.

Visualization, Ed Harris Jan 1989

Visualization, Ed Harris

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In pockets of deep prehistory, humans made the first marks on their world. Those marks were completely new images, images that had not existed before. The painting and tooling on stone walls recorded and attempted to explain human interaction with the world. Languages, alphabets, systems of numbers and physical structures came much later. Each new tool eventually became interconnected with the others to produce more complex means of studying, recording and building the human-world relationship. These pockets of activity moved, merged, divided or died. The accumulations of perceptions, knowledge and technology continued to mix and reconnect.

With such a large district, we have over 400 contestants. The competition takes place in the afternoons of two school days, which releases teachers to help in supervision and allows students to be dismissed at the regular time. This helps ensure large attendance and avoids after-school transportation problems.

Improving Science Teacher Preparation: Perspective On Standards, Robert L. Fisher Jan 1989

Improving Science Teacher Preparation: Perspective On Standards, Robert L. Fisher

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

They are all telling you how to educate your future teachers of science: Legislators are passing mandates; professional committees publish report after report; state bureaucrats are holding the line on regulations that have been around for years; the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) is adopting new standards; and the guys down the hall have suddenly become experts on what you are doing to educate teachers. Too much! But, if you are a college science instructor involved with the preparation of science teachers for the K-12 schools, there are developments from the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) …
