Demonstration Model Of An Organic Catalyst, Dennis Sievers Jan 1984

Demonstration Model Of An Organic Catalyst, Dennis Sievers

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Introductory high school biology courses generally include a discussion of enzymes. Enzymes, commonly defined as biological catalysts, speed up biochemical reactions and are involved in nearly every biochemical process that occurs in a living organism. Many texts currently being used provide diagrams of enzyme action and a discussion of the "lock and key fit" of enzyme and substrate. Laboratory manuals accompanying these texts frequently indicate the usefulness of the chewed cracker experiment to demonstrate the presence and ·action of salivary amylase. Though this experiment uses an enzyme, it does not always accomplish the desired result - to enable the students …

Science Notes - Book News : "Science And Creation: Geological, Theological And Educational Perspectives", Robert W. Hanson

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

During the past few years the scientific community at large and the education community in particular have awakened to the public's concern about restoring traditional values in American society. The theory of evolution is seen by many Fundamentalists as responsible for the destruction of these values. Thus, in an attempt to restore this value system, a substantial part of the public has supported the movement to teach "creation science," which purports to show that a literal interpretation of the Genesis account of origins, including the notion that the universe is only a few thousand years old, can be supported scientifically.

Mathematics And Science Education Pays Off, Jack A. Gerlovich Jan 1984

Mathematics And Science Education Pays Off, Jack A. Gerlovich

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

2. mathematics

Many states have implemented legislation in an effort to improve science and mathematics education in our nation's schools. Last year; the Iowa General Assembly enacted House File #532. The bill established several innovative state programs designed to encourage greater emphasis in the study of mathematics and science. Three of these programs were to be administered by the Iowa College Aid Commission, and had direct influence on K-12 science courses, teachers, and prospective teachers.

The Feeding Behavior Of The Giant Waterbug, Stephen W. Ziser Jan 1984

The Feeding Behavior Of The Giant Waterbug, Stephen W. Ziser

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Ethology, the study of animal behavior; is a branch of biology too often overlooked in beginning biology courses. This is unfortunate since studying the behavior of living animals not only captures the interest and imagination of students more easily than other kinds of laboratory exercises but can also help to develop the skills of observation and description so fundamental to the art of science.

A Primary View Of Science Education, Marjorie A. Switz Jan 1984

A Primary View Of Science Education, Marjorie A. Switz

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The primary teacher has a fundamental task in science education. The responsibility today is greater than ever to perform the science education task carefully, with specific curriculum goals clearly and sequentially mapped out. Primary teachers work with very impressionable material - young students. They lay the foundation of formal learning. No structure is sound or lasting if it has a weak or unsound foundation. The same is true of the education of young students and their introduction to organized science processes and knowledge. The foundation must be laid with care and strength of purpose. Primary teachers have the fascinating task …

A Biological Light Meter, Dennis Sievers Jan 1984

A Biological Light Meter, Dennis Sievers

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

High school experimentation during the study of botany generally includes observing photobiological processes. These might include photosynthesis, phototrophism and photoperiodism. Experiments with these processes often involve exposing a plant or plant tissue to a light source covered with a piece of colored cellophane or plastic. Measurement of the light intensity at a specific wave length is often necessary.

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In July, the NSTA Board of Directors adopted a statement of "Recommended Standards for the Preparation and Certification of Secondary School Teachers of Science." The document was built upon the work of the NSTA teacher education committee, which developed similar statements for the elementary, middle school, and junior high two years ago. Writing and designing of the final document was accomplished by William C. Ritz and Kenneth R. Mechling, NSTA directors of teacher education; Ronald Cleminson, AETS president; and Bettye Sue Tubertini, teacher education committee member.

The Word Processor: A Tool Towards Improving Every High School Research Project, George E. O'Brien Jan 1984

The Word Processor: A Tool Towards Improving Every High School Research Project, George E. O'Brien

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Two important education phenomena are happening concurrently across the state of Iowa. First, it should be no surprise that the number of computers and computer science course offerings in high school is steadily increasing while the number of microcomputers in students' homes is also becoming greater. These factors have led to an overall increase in the number of high school students interacting with computers across the state. Second, feedback received from a variety of sources including state and regional science teachers' meetings, talented and gifted conferences (TAG), student science fair and symposia competitions and high school in-service visitations by Area …

The Learning Cycle Inquiry Strategy, Peter A. Rubba

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In Carbondale, Illinois, Ms. Walters' 31 seventh graders enter the science classroom to find an array of materials and equipment on the tables. At each table are a balance, metric scale, graduated cylinder, and six cubical solids and six spherical solids; two of each solid type are made of aluminum, two of plastic, and two of steel; one of each pair of solids is larger than the other.

Twenty Years Ago In Istj: "Live" Geology, Mary Isidore Rohan Jan 1984

Twenty Years Ago In Istj: "Live" Geology, Mary Isidore Rohan

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

How old is the earth? Where did it come from? How was it made? Junior high students are determined to solve all life's mysteries, and therefore geology with its wealth of clues is a likely target for their curiosity. The earth sciences seem to hold an almost mystical fascination for the junior high age child possibly because the adolescent is beginning to realize he is part of the whole universe and not just of a family, and is using his powers of observation to see what this universe holds.
