In Australia, the Collegial Snapshot (CSS) process has been a culturally safe, engaging and empowering way for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and their parents and carers to share their insights and ideas about what makes an effective school. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parents and carers through the Collegial Snapshot Process identified six key variables that make an effective school for their child including the Cultural Environment, Quality of Teachers, Community Engagement, Student Health and Wellbeing, Curriculum and School Leadership. Studies Of Asia In Year 12, Jenny Wilkinson, Gina Milgate
Studies Of Asia In Year 12, Jenny Wilkinson, Gina Milgate
Gina C Milgate
Across Australia, very few Year 12 subjects focus on Asia, according to this report. Where content on Asia is offered, it often has an Australian or Western focus. The authors found that, in practice, it is schools and teachers who select the material that students will study. Teachers are not likely to select material with which they themselves are unfamiliar or may have never studied. They will tend to choose what they know about and are confident of teaching, particularly at Year 12 level, where so much rides on students’ results. What teachers know and teach about will reflect to …

Within the Education Revolution lies another, thus far quieter revolution that attempts to raise the profile and status of First Peoples' culture in the Australian cultural complex. This book addresses the coalface of this revolution where two cultures meet; in the classroom, the school, the community, and in both state and national education curricula. Contributors are mostly experienced Indigenous practitioners drawn from academia, the teaching profession and the community. They put the spotlight on policies and processes that serve to either facilitate an informed, respectful relationship in education, or act to reinforce cultural inequity and inequality. Policy implications that can …
