Many science education programs involve scientists in K-12 education to support students’ engagement in scientific practices and learning science process skills and scientific epistemologies. Little research has studied the actions of scientists in classrooms or how scientists’ actions may (or may not) supplement or complement the actions of teachers. In this descriptive study, we explore how teachers and scientists, working in pairs, guide high school students in the practice of scientific experimentation. In particular, we study the ways by which teachers and scientists act independently and in concert to guide students in designing and conducting biology experiments with unknown outcomes. …

Adaptive Augmented Reality Serious Game To Foster Problem Solving Skills, Rania Hodhod
Faculty Bibliography
This paper describes the design of an adaptive intelligent augmented reality serious game which aims to foster problem solving skills in young learners. Studies show that our students lack computational thinking skills in high school, which raises the need to establish new methods to develop these skills in our younger learners. We believe that problem solving skills are the fundamental skills of computational thinking and are critical for STEM, in addition to a broad range of other fields. Therefore we decided to focus on those meta-cognitive skills acquired to foster problem solving, such as strategic knowledge. The game described in …

A Truly Radical Idea In Social Studies Education: Teach The State Standards, Richard Gardiner
A Truly Radical Idea In Social Studies Education: Teach The State Standards, Richard Gardiner
Faculty Bibliography
State social studies standards are reflective of the concepts of Bloom’s taxonomy, emphasizing the development of higher order thinking skills. Standardized social studies tests, on the other hand, are not reflective of Bloom’s taxonomy and almost exclusively test for memorization and identification. In other words, the standards target very different objectives than the standardized tests are designed to assess. If, then, the central objective is to achieve adequate or higher standardized test scores, we must admit that it is not “standards-based” education that is desired, but rather test-focused instruction.

Development Of A Freshman Orientation Survey To Improve Student Retention Within A College, Jennifer Brown
Faculty Bibliography
With growing concerns over high education accountability and diminishing resources, student retention rates and the reasons why students remain at a post-secondary institution continue to persist. Since the 1960s, researchers have examined cognitive and non-cognitive factors that impact whether or not students stay at a particular post-secondary institution until graduation. The purpose of this study was to develop the Freshman Orientation Survey to improve student retention. Using the constructs which were presented in peer-reviewed literature along with a peer-review process within the College, a survey instrument was developed to examine pre-college enrollment characteristics for a College within a 4-year state …

Adding Culture Shock To An Introductory Diversity Course, Jennifer Brown
Faculty Bibliography
The cultural diversity of the student population within K-12 classrooms has become ever-changing, but the cultural diversity of the teacher population within those classrooms has remianed relatively stagnant. The purpose of this article was to outline the Cross-Cultural Simulation used the pre-service teacher candidates and to provide supporting evidence of its impact and effect on the pre-service teacher candidates. This study used a mixed methods approach with journal entries and inventories to determine the impact and effectiveness of the cross-cultural simulation. The results indicated that the participants felt the simulation allowed them to apply the classroom content within a direct …

Identifying Students’ Mental Models Of Sound Propagation: The Role Of Conceptual Blending In Understanding Conceptual Change, Zdeslav Hrepic
Identifying Students’ Mental Models Of Sound Propagation: The Role Of Conceptual Blending In Understanding Conceptual Change, Zdeslav Hrepic
Faculty Bibliography
We investigated introductory physics students’ mental models of sound propagation. We used a phenomenographic method to analyze the data in the study. In addition to the scientifically accepted Wave model, students used the “Entity” model to describe the propagation of sound. In this latter model sound is a self-standing entity, different from the medium through which it propagates. All other observed alternative models contain elements of both Entity and Wave models, but at the same time are distinct from each of the constituent models. We called these models “hybrid” or “blend” models. We discuss how students use these models in …

Aeins: Interactive Narrative Role In Fostering Character Education, Rania Hodhod
Faculty Bibliography
Promoting ethical, responsible, and caring young people is a perennial aim of education. Efforts have been done to find other teaching ways other than traditional ones such as games and role play. Narrative-based computer games have found their way as engaging learning platforms that allow collaboration of humans and computers in the creation of innovative experiences. In this paper, we focus on the design of an adaptive, interactive narrative model that makes use of a student model to provide an individualized story-path and an individualized learning process. In other words, we aim to have strong learning objectives underpinned by effective …

Character Education Using Pedagogical Agents And Socratic Voice, Rania Hodhod
Faculty Bibliography
Promoting ethical, responsible, and caring young people is a perennial aim of education. Schools are invited to include moral teaching in every possible curriculum, such as the core subjects and sports teams and clubs. Efforts have been done to find other teaching ways other than traditional ones such as games or role play or engaging students in moral dilemmas. Computer games have been always found as one of the most engaging learning platforms. This paper introduces AEINS, a learning environment that is designed and implemented based on the learning theories such as: Bloom’s Taxonomy, Keller’s ARCS model and Gagné’s Nine …

The effectiveness of lecture format of physics instruction has been demonstrated to be inferior to that of more recently developed, research based methods (R. R. Hake, 1997; L. C. McDermott, 1993; E. F. Redish, 2003b). The information retained from traditional lecture frequently has a short lifetime and is unreliable. Our earlier study identified various types of misunderstandings that may occur in a lecture type setting. They include recording facts incorrectly, concentrating on particularities and details in the instructor’s statements at the expense of the more general concept, hearing “what makes sense” while overlooking what was actually stated, using the same …
