Mathematical proofs are conceptually difficult for many students and the perceived lack of relevance in terms of authenticity and practicality may result in feelings of apathy or indifference. Providing students with connections and applications of the process of proof-solving can help alleviate this problem. This project was created by a teacher for teachers, providing alternative assessments for a geometry classroom. The assessments emphasize collaboration and group work as part of the assessment task. Topics include geometric proofs, geometric constructions, Pythagorean Theorem, trigonometry, polygons and polyhedra, volume and surface area. Recommendations for how and when to use each alternative assessment have been provided by the author. Additionally scoring rubrics have been provided. The alternative assessments are aligned to the Common Core State Standards, specifically geometry standards throughout secondary grade levels.

This study explores how a disciplinary literacy framework could impact adolescent comprehension in the content area of social studies. I collected qualitative data by recording interviews with five high school social studies teachers, while also analyzing the school’s curriculum and its integration of literacy. Several findings were acquired from the research: 1) a need to return to the basics of reading and writing; 2) break down the sources for student comprehension of complex texts used in social studies classes; 3) students’ struggle with historical writing; and 4) comprehension literacy strategies used in social studies classrooms. This research investigates how a mathematics teacher and a literacy expert co-teach to provide differentiated instruction in a general education setting within a heterogeneous classroom, i.e. instruction is tailored so that all students can work within their Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). Vygotsky's ZPD theory has been shown in research as a valuable tool towards assisting students with successful problem solving outcomes through student-to-student interaction, and through student and teacher interaction.
