Abstract This action research project based in sociocultural theory and Critical Race theory focused on how teachers are using socially based strategies to support comprehension among English language learners (ELL). Research for this study took place at Harmony Elementary School (pseudonym) located within the Rochester City School District. During the completion of this study, the primary focus was based on observations within an ESOL (English for speakers of other languages ) teacher's classroom. Formative Assessment: Understanding Learning In The Middle School Classroom, Amanda Stephens

This study examined the way teachers use formative assessment in the middle school classroom. Data was collected through field observations, teacher interviews, and reviewing written responses on student work. The findings showed that implementing formative assessment creates structure and engages students. The findings also show that the lack of formative assessment can cause resistance to what the teacher is trying to accomplish. Based on the literature reviewed and the research data, students engage and respond better to the use of formative assessments.

Strategies To Assist Emergent Literacy Learners In Acquiring Alphabetic Knowledge, Print Awareness, And Phonological Awareness Skills, Jenna Wheater

Emergent literacy is quickly becoming a vital aspect of schooling; as it often reveals a student’s later success. This research asked what strategies teachers can use to assist emergent learners in their literacy development. Research indicates that print concepts, oral language, phonological awareness, and letter knowledge are the strongest predictors of future reading success. Observations and interviews of seven preschool students indicated the need for explicit, hands-on approaches to teach emergent literacy skills. Young learners require adult-mediated discussions and play, as well as the use of manipulatives and technology to increase their understanding. This paper documents the history of equine assisted therapy, therapeutic riding programs and the value of utilizing the equine as part of an alternative program for children and adults with disabilities. The researcher performed a qualitative study by working with two equine centers certified for therapeutic riding. The researcher was able to interact with and observe separate groups of children participating in equine assisted programs. The parents of these children were then interviewed regarding the changes in self-esteem of the children due to their participation in the program. This study focuses on how Skype interactive book talks support literacy learning in young children. The research conducted was observing kindergarten students during four Skype sessions, sending out parent questionnaires and interviewing students. The findings show technology enhances student learning by motivating students to learn and engaging them in diverse activities that integrate different learning styles. Teachers should increase their use of technology in the classroom to advance student learning and provide the necessary skills that students need to function in a technological society.
