Shared Gold: Mapping Of Community Engagement, Brian Gogan, Jennifer Harrison

Academic Leadership Academy

Engaged universities and communities are a key focus for meaningful social transformation and addressing complex educational issues including access, research ethics, and business development (Cherrington et al., 2018).

Universities throughout the nation are called not only to serve their academic community, but also the communities in which they are situated. In fact, ongoing revisions to the Higher Learning Commission’s accreditation criteria suggest that community engagement will serve as a primary means by which institutions of higher education will demonstrate their publicly oriented missions and fulfill accreditation criterion number one (Higher Learning Commission, 2018).

Community engagement can be defined as “the …

Partnering Library Research With Presentation And Writing Services At Western Michigan University’S Hcob Communication Center, Lumarie Guth, Marty Deming Maytnier

University Libraries Faculty & Staff Presentations

The development of the learning commons and embedded librarianship are two of the most recent responses to the downward trend in traditional reference statistics for academic libraries. Reference librarians are rethinking how to demonstrate the added value of their services and reach users at their point of need both online and face‐to‐face. Trends in the building of learning commons and service centers have led to the integration of support services such as tutoring, writing assistance, computer access, collaborative study zones, and research help in order to provide a one‐stop shop for students. For the past two years, business librarians for …

Textbook Alternatives: Library Supported Options For Students And Faculty, Michele D. Behr, Julie Hayward

University Libraries Faculty & Staff Presentations

The issue of course textbooks continues to be a challenge in higher education. For students the primary concern is the skyrocketing costs: spending several hundred dollars for required textbooks per semester at a time when tuition and fees continue to rise. Consequently, students are borrowing, renting or simply forgoing purchasing textbooks to alleviate some of the financial burden. For those students who are unable to purchase textbooks, are they still receiving the same high quality education? Although faculty members empathize with students’ frustrations concerning textbook prices, they may not be aware of the alternative resources and services offered by the …

Textbook Alternatives: Options For Students And Faculty, Michele D. Behr

Academic Leadership Academy

The issue of course textbooks continues to be a challenge at WMU as well as in all of higher education. For students the primary concern is textbook prices. Students often spend several hundred dollars per semester for required textbooks, at a time when tuition and other costs of attending college are increasing as well. Faculty are of course sensitive to student concerns and frustrations about textbook prices, but may be unaware of other options to cover the same content. Currently there is a movement toward Open Educational Resources (OER) which is a way to provide open access to high quality …

Higher education librarians and faculty members alike are faced with an ever expanding palette of technologies available for instructional use. Licensing Issues In The Acquisition Of Slides, Digital Images, And Digital Reproduction Rights For Two Digital Image Projects At Western Michigan University, Miranda Howard Apr 2003

Licensing Issues In The Acquisition Of Slides, Digital Images, And Digital Reproduction Rights For Two Digital Image Projects At Western Michigan University, Miranda Howard

University Libraries Faculty & Staff Publications

" Advances taking place in digital imaging technology and projection are changing the way that libraries acquire images for classroom and research use. In the teaching of the visual arts and other subjects where material culture is at the heart of the discipline, pictures of objects are used as surrogates for actual artifacts, since pictorial surrogates allow instructors to talk about a work without having the actual piece present. One of the major changes in image acquisition brought about by new technology is that image vendors and the educational community are now much more attuned to the regulations of copyright …

Keys To Professional Information For Teachers, Roy C. Bryan

Faculty Contributions (1950-1981)

One is well aware that graduate students, in the earlier days of their advanced study, tend to be wasteful of their time and effort. Much of this waste is caused by the fact that they have little knowledge of the library keys and indexes that will aid them in locating references quickly and assembling bibliographies that are pertinent to their papers and projects.

This publication is designed to provide that much n needed assistance. The materials contained herein, admittedly, do not include every key and index that is now available. However, the School of Graduate Studies is convinced that those …
