Characterizing exercise gas exchange response dynamics reveals important information about physiological control processes and cardiopulmonary dysfunction. However, current methods for extracting exercise response dynamics typically use multiple step-wise transitions, limiting applicability of this technique. PURPOSE: We designed a new protocol (chirp waveform) to extract exercise gas exchange response dynamics in a single visit. We tested the hypothesis that gas exchange response dynamics extracted from chirp forcing would be similar to those extracted from step-wise transitions. Low back injury is a common concern in golfers and caddies. The literature often points to the biomechanics of the golf swing as the major contributing factor; however, golfers and caddies can regularly walk upward of 10,000 steps on uneven terrain while carrying equipment, which can contribute to the cumulative load on the low back. The loss of muscle mass and function (sarcopenia) afflicts 11-74% of all aging adults, with prevalence increasing with age. Exercise training is clearly effective in preventing or attenuating sarcopenia. The cellular mechanisms of exercise’s protective effects are not entirely clear, but AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is thought to play an important role, in part by regulating gene expression. Extensive research on front lunge biomechanical movement exists previously, however, the existing research lacks information regarding fatigue or center of pressure (COP). Much of the reported Wildland Firefighter (WLFF) data use prediction equations which tend to underestimate oxygen consumption (VO2) during load carriage. During mechanical ventilation (MV), force developed by the diaphragm is decreased over time much faster than locomotor muscles. This is known as ventilator-induced diaphragm dysfunction (VIDD), and VIDD may be accelerated by intramyofiber oxidative stress. An important free radical used for the treatment of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is nitric oxide (NO) which can diffuse to diaphragm myofibers during treatment. Identifying the gas exchange threshold (GET) and the respiratory compensation point (RCP) are the least invasive methods for determining aerobic training zones from maximal graded exercise tests. This process requires a thorough examination of several respiratory gas exchange parameters from breath-by-breath or time binned averages. Given the nature of processing data in this fashion, standardized tools could be useful in improving exercise physiology student’s accuracy in identifying these thresholds. Sural nerve injury (SNI) is a reported complication of acute Achilles tendon rupture (ATR), primarily iatrogenic in operatively managed cases. The sural nerve typically runs along the lateral border of the Achilles tendon. Its branches provide sensory information from the lateral foot and ankle. Given its proximity to the Achilles tendon, sural nerve-related complications in operatively managed cases are a known adverse outcome. However, the incidence of SNI in conservatively managed cases is thought to be much less common. Most patients recover to normal sensation by one year of injury to the sural nerve.
