Auxin-Regulated Gene Expression, Tom J. Guilfoyle Jan 1991

Auxin-Regulated Gene Expression, Tom J. Guilfoyle

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

A number of cDNA clones to independent mRNAs that increase in amount after brief exposure to auxins have been isolated. From soybean, sequenced, and characterized. Increases in mRNA abundance can be detected as early as 2.5 minutes after auxin application to excised elongating regions of soybean hypocotyls. Increased transcription rates on the genes which encode the auxin-responsive mRNAs account, at least partly, for the accumulation of mRNAs. A variety of auxins induce the accumulation of the mRNAs, but other plant hormones have no effect on the mRNA abundance. Some of the genes which encode the mRNAs are clustered in the …

Lxodes Dammini (Acari, Ixodidae) And Borrelia Burgdorferi In Iowa, Mark G. Novak, Wayne A. Rowley, Kenneth B. Platt, David M. Bartholomew, Michelle D. Senne

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

A statewide study to evaluate the presence, distribution and abundance of the deer tick, Ixodes dammini, and the spirochete, Borrelia burgdorfen, in Iowa was initiated in 1989. Six hundred and seventy-one tick collections were received from health professionals, conservation employees and concerned citizens. Additional ticks were obtained by flagging, small mammal trapping and deer checks in selected areas of Iowa. Nine I. dammini were collected in 1989 from seven counties in the eastern half of the state. Six of these were tested for B. burgdorferi and all were negative. Flagging, small mammal trapping and deer checks in eastern Iowa failed …

Radon In Iowa Homes: Results Of Screening Measurements, Laurent Hodges, Lynne Gillette Jan 1991

Radon In Iowa Homes: Results Of Screening Measurements, Laurent Hodges, Lynne Gillette

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Homeowner-initiated short-term radon screening measurements in Iowa homes show that only about 30% of the homes have low enough radon levels - below 148 Bq/m (4.0 pC1/L) - that no follow-up measurements are necessary. Over 6 percent of the homes have screening measurements in excess of 740 Bq/m3 (20 pCi/L), a level at which prompt follow-up measurements are recommended. In all parts of the state, the range of radon results extends from low levels (below 37 Bq/m3 = 1 pCi/L) to high levels (above 740 Bq/m3). The average radon results tend to be higher than the …

Development Of A Discipline Plan For Secondary Schools, Gary Lee Ross Jan 1991

Development Of A Discipline Plan For Secondary Schools, Gary Lee Ross

Graduate Research Papers

Lack of discipline has consistently been cited as one of the most serious problems confronting the public schools. Gallup and Elam (1989) cited the lack of discipline In schools as the second most important problem facing the local public schools behind the use of drugs. School boards, parents, teachers, and administrators all seem to be dissatisfied with discipline in schools.

The Effects Of Teacher Empowerment On Student Achievement, Michael Dean Sawyer Jan 1991

The Effects Of Teacher Empowerment On Student Achievement, Michael Dean Sawyer

Graduate Research Papers

Today a major topic of conversation with administrators and teachers is teacher empowerment. Many people have their own beliefs on what constitutes teacher empowerment. one basic definition is that teacher empowerment is placing greater responsibility in the hands of teachers for the designs and delivery of educational strategies (Erlandson & Bifano, 1987). In one attempt to define empowerment in terms of a projected outcome, Gore (1989) indicated that empowerment was an end state hence he implied that empowerment is a goal or vision. Lightfoot (1985) on the other hand views empowerment as a process. He indicated that empowerment consists of …

Anorexia Nervosa: A Family Systems Perspective, Mary Tonkin Jan 1991

Anorexia Nervosa: A Family Systems Perspective, Mary Tonkin

Graduate Research Papers

Anorexia Nervosa is primarily a disorder of the adolescent female. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-111-R) (American Psychiatric Association, 1987), the age of onset is usually early to late adolescence (12-18), although it can range from prepuberty to the early 30s (rare) with a gender-specific psychopathology of 95% female. The cardinal feature of anorexia is the relentless pursuit of thinness, often leading to life-threatening weight loss. This pursuit of thinness becomes associated with intense fears about eating, gaining weight, getting fat, and losing control over food intake. A mortality rate between 5% and 18% is …

The Effects Of Curriculum Content Compacting Upon Student Achievement In Fourth Grade Mathematics, Christine Brunko Schultz Jan 1991

The Effects Of Curriculum Content Compacting Upon Student Achievement In Fourth Grade Mathematics, Christine Brunko Schultz

Graduate Research Papers

Council Bluffs Community Schools, in order to meet the needs of students, formally established two programs for able learners in 1986. They are called Challenge Centers and Talent Pools. The Challenge Centers are housed in four elementary schools within the district. They are available to all students who exhibit special needs in academic areas. These students comprise the upper one to two percent of the student population and are served by the Challenge Center teachers for two to three hours each day. The remainder of their day is very similar to that of other students in the school. The Challenge …

Astronomy Resources, Thomas Hockey Jan 1991

Astronomy Resources, Thomas Hockey

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

A visual survey of all nine major planets is a standard way of beginning a series of lessons in solar-system astronomy. One of the pitfalls of such a slide program is that the different worlds of the Solar System tend to blur together in students' minds. To separate my topics, I have prepared a set of title slides. The street sign motif underscores the theme of "touring" the Solar System.

Vascular Flora Of Arend's Kettle, Freda Haffner Kettlehole State Preserve, Dickinson County, Iowa, Edwin L. Freese, William J. Platt

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Arend's Kettle is a 5 ha glacial landform in Dickinson County, Iowa. The flora of this kettle was studied over two years prior to acquisition by the Nature Conservancy in 1973. The known vascular flora of Arend's Kettle as of 1973 consisted of 299 species, representing 177 genera and 59 families. The vegetation ranged from xeric short grass prairie along the rims of the kettle to mesic prairie along the middle and lower slopes. In the bottom of the kettle, there was a marsh/seasonal pond community that varied greatly in the amount of water present, depending on rainfall within the …

In Search Of A Gibberellin Receptor, Lalit M. Srivastava, Konrad A. Sechley Jan 1991

In Search Of A Gibberellin Receptor, Lalit M. Srivastava, Konrad A. Sechley

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Use of tritiated gibberellins ([3H] GA1, [3H] GA4) of high specific activity and purity has allowed the determination of GA-specific binding sites in several plant tissues both in vivo and in vitro. In cucumber hypocotyls and pea epicotyls which have been most investigated the binding of [3H] GA; occurs to soluble proteins. This binding is saturable ('n' =about 30 pmol. Mg-1 soluble protein), of high affinity (KD= about 70 nM), and is competed for by other GA, and derivatives in proportion to their biological activity in these …

Effects Of Visual/Verbal Associations, Anna C. Martin

Faculty Publications

Different effects of instructional strategies on recall and comprehension of terms frequently used in formal analysis of art were examined. The study looked at a synthesis of three theoretical positions: dual-coding theory; schema theory; and elaboration theory. Two-hundred and fifty sixth-grade students were randomly assigned to three groups: control subjects; graphic subjects; and transformational subjects. Instruments consisted of Raven's Standard Progressive Matrices (RSPM) and the Art Vocabulary Test (AVT). The program consisted of three phases: (1) a 10-minute study session; (2) an interactive discussion; and (3) a drawing task. The results suggested that imagery strategies help students form and retain …

A Survey And Analysis Of Potential Uses Of The Computer In The Social Studies Classroom, Mike Healy Jan 1991

A Survey And Analysis Of Potential Uses Of The Computer In The Social Studies Classroom, Mike Healy

Graduate Research Papers

The computer has become an integral tool in education. In math classes, in business education classes, in computer literacy classes, the computer is a well-accepted tool of instruction. However, computers have been slow to enter most Social Studies classrooms, including my classroom. Should the computer be used in the Social Studies classroom? What would be an effective use of computers in the classroom? Would the computer be the best tool for that unit of instruction?

Gifted Identification Practices In Five Southwest Iowa Public Elementary Schools: Their Impact On The Gifted Underachiever, Lauren E. O'Bradovich Jan 1991

Gifted Identification Practices In Five Southwest Iowa Public Elementary Schools: Their Impact On The Gifted Underachiever, Lauren E. O'Bradovich

Graduate Research Papers

In 1988 the State of Iowa mandated every school district to have a program to meet the needs of gifted and talented students. In addition, the new standards provided that the program would include "valid and systematic procedures employing multiple criteria for identifying gifted and talented students" (Iowa Department of Education, 1988). The subsequent new wave of TAG programs in the state has resulted in the necessity to build nomination and screening strategies for the selection of students for the various programs.

Reading Comprehension: Strategies For Intermediate Whole Language Teachers, Elaine Madsen Jan 1991

Reading Comprehension: Strategies For Intermediate Whole Language Teachers, Elaine Madsen

Graduate Research Papers

The term "whole language" appears in journal articles, in textbook ads, in workshops, and in school district adoptions. Many teachers are being required to apply whole language approaches in their classroom. The Council Bluffs Community School District, for example, recently adopted a whole language approach to teaching language arts K-6. The intermediate educators in this district want to know more about whole language and are concerned about the effect of using a whole language approach on the ability of the reader to comprehend what ls read.

Gifted Underachievement: Causes And Curriculum Implications, Carol Mattox Jan 1991

Gifted Underachievement: Causes And Curriculum Implications, Carol Mattox

Graduate Research Papers

One of the major concerns ln gifted education has been how to meet the needs of the underachieving gifted. This concern probably stems from the perception that when dealing with the gifted label as applied to students educators are dealing with potential. And when giftedness ls viewed as potential, both educators and parents tend to feel they have an obligation to develop that potential to its fullest (Seeley, 1985). Many factors in gifted students 1 lives can Interrupt that development of their giftedness.

The Wasberg Effect, Thomas H. Vertrees Jan 1991

The Wasberg Effect, Thomas H. Vertrees

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Working on demonstrations that were considered useful and graphic teaching tools received considerable energy from the participants at the North West Workshop for Teachers of Chemistry (NWW) under the direction of Dr. Glenn Crosby at Washington State University in 1987. Some new demonstrations were developed, but most of the effort was spent dealing with traditional and published successful teaching aids to make the directions uniform and clear, even to teachers without extensive chemistry training, and to perfect directions that would work every time.
