In Search Of Intimacy, Mark A. Dix Jan 1983

In Search Of Intimacy, Mark A. Dix

Graduate Research Papers

The traditional means to attain intimacy through dictated marriage were historically fulfilled by society and parents who betrothed their children. Societal and parental dictated norms usurped the individual's freedom and required living up to externally mandated expectations of behavior. Today's system of intimacy departs dramatically from the traditional model. Today's model is formed by the individual who freely meets his/her own needs regardless of age or historically based, societal or cultural standards of expected conduct. Today's mode of living gives an individual the freedom to pursue, court and marry based solely upon his/her own needs, expectations and love.

Self-Image Psychology And Its Effects On Human Potential, Lila Porter Staff Jan 1983

Self-Image Psychology And Its Effects On Human Potential, Lila Porter Staff

Graduate Research Papers

All human beings have a wealth of talent and ability lying dormant within them. This hidden wealth has been labeled human potential. People have not yet determined an accurate way to measure or predict human potential. But, if they were to look back over history, they could clearly see hills and valleys of human achievement. The intent of this paper is to share insights and concepts that will allow people to develop more of their own potential. Then, with this understanding of concepts, instructional designers can more intelligently and successfully develop instruction that is consistent with the way their students …

Differences In Gifted And Nongifted Students And Their Birth Order, Linda Meyer Jan 1983

Differences In Gifted And Nongifted Students And Their Birth Order, Linda Meyer

Graduate Research Papers

In recent years research has been conducted to determine the effects of birth-order on a child. A child's sex, physical attributes, size of family, presence or absence of parents, and order of birth, all have effects on a child's development. Birth-order places a child into a special arrangement with the other members of the family. A child's birth-order in his family is both a structural and a processional variable (Albert, 1980). Family structure determines which family member will have the greatest effect on the child. As a process, birth order helps determine the length and intensity of family influences on …

Attitudes Of Secondary Teachers Toward Mainstreaming Mildly Educationally Handicapped Students, Joan D. Barringer Jan 1983

Attitudes Of Secondary Teachers Toward Mainstreaming Mildly Educationally Handicapped Students, Joan D. Barringer

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

With the enactment of Public Law 94-142, the Education For All Handicapped Children Act of 1975, while most educators have been influenced by the requirement to meet the needs of youngsters in the "least restrictive environment," onus of responsibility generally filters down to the classroom teachers. It was the purpose of this study to determine just what are the attitudes of secondary teachers toward integrating the mildly educationally handicapped student into the regular class. The primary question was whether exposure to the concept of mainstreaming positively influences attitudes.

The investigation involved 501 secondary teachers selected by a stratified random sampling …

Comparison Of Wisc-R And Wais-R Scores For Mentally Disabled 16-Year-Olds And Their Correlation With Adaptive Behavior As Measured By The Sssq, Susan K. Gerken

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The present study examined the comparability of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children--Revised (WISC-R) and the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale--Revised (WAIS-R) Verbal Intelligence Quotients (VIQ), Performance Intelligence Quotients (PIQ), and Full Scale Intelligence Quotients (FSIQ) for a sample of mentally disabled 16-year-old students. In addition, the study examined the relationship of the WISC-Rand WAIS-R to adaptive behavior as measured by the Street Survival Skills Questionnaire (SSSQ). Twenty-eight students, 12 males and 16 females, from 10 schools in Iowa Area Education Agencies 6 and 7 participated in the study. The WAIS-Rand the SSSQ were administered to each student in testing rooms …

A Comparative Study Of Selected Behaviors Of Children From Divorced/Separated And Intact Families In The Parochial School System, Elaine Delaney Jan 1983

A Comparative Study Of Selected Behaviors Of Children From Divorced/Separated And Intact Families In The Parochial School System, Elaine Delaney

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study was designed to determine if there is a significant difference in selected behaviors of children from divorced/separated families in the parochial school system as compared with children of intact families within the same school system. The relationship was examined by taking into consideration the child's self evaluation of his/her home, school, and peer relationships and teacher's evaluation of school related behavior. Four parochial elementary schools with relatively equal economic status were selected from the metropolitan area of a large mid-western city. Subjects included four hundred eighty-three fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students and their respective homeroom teachers. Sixty-three …

A Study Of The Relationship Between Intelligence And Creativity, Jill L. Weig Jan 1983

A Study Of The Relationship Between Intelligence And Creativity, Jill L. Weig

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of the present research study was twofold. The first purpose was to determine the relationship between creativity and intelligence when intelligence was assessed by a group test (CAT-V) and an individual test (WISC-Rt V). The second purpose was to examine the threshold hypothesis, which states that below a critical IQ level, usually 120, the two constructs appear to be positively and moderately related. Above this level, the correlation between the two constructs lessens. Theoretical and statistical foundations regarding the relationship between the two constructs were addressed. The theoretical model addressed divergent/convergent thinking properties. Creativity was considered a, divergent …

An Investigation Into Teaching Behaviors With Reading Groups Of Different Achieving Levels, Sue Ann Gross Jan 1983

An Investigation Into Teaching Behaviors With Reading Groups Of Different Achieving Levels, Sue Ann Gross

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The specific purpose of this study was to investigate teacher behaviors within formal instructional reading periods to determine whether such instruction systematically differed as a function of reader group placement and the size of the group. The following problematic questions were addressed: (1) Relative to the school day, what proportion of the time is scheduled for formal reading instruction? (2) Relative to the total scheduled reading period, what amount of time and number of reading events are allocated to the low versus the high achieving group? (3) Relative to the time allocated to the low versus the high achieving group, …

A Survey Of Custodial Manager’S Perceptions Of Employee Problems And Related Implications For The Training Of Mentally Retarded Workers, Patricia Jo Slobojan Jan 1983

A Survey Of Custodial Manager’S Perceptions Of Employee Problems And Related Implications For The Training Of Mentally Retarded Workers, Patricia Jo Slobojan

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

A survey was conducted of custodial manager's perceptions of employee problems and related implications for the training of mentally retarded workers. Specifically, the study investigated career-related problems of handicapped and nonhandicapped custodial workers. The survey questioned the managers of these workers to find out what problems existed and how often they occurred. The results of this survey were then used to prioritize problems and to indicate specific areas of needed training for custodial workers in general, and for the mentally retarded worker in particular. Specific training of the mentally retarded worker in these deficit skill areas should improve chances of …

Developing And Managing A Media Design And Production Facility, Clark Walter Petersen

Graduate Research Papers

Although there is a difference of opinion in the number of educational institutions offering graduate and undergraduate programs in media, in the United States there are between 120 and 160 graduate and undergraduate degree programs in media according to Richard Nibeck (1982) Deputy Executive Director, Association for Educational Communications and Technology. Less than 50% of these 2 schools require more than two courses in management with less than 25% requiring additional course work in business management or other business relate

A Comparison Of Perception Of Ethical Conduct In Competitive Athletics, Deborah Fay Turnball Jan 1983

A Comparison Of Perception Of Ethical Conduct In Competitive Athletics, Deborah Fay Turnball

Graduate Research Papers

Athletics and competition within the United States have been present for many years. Men have had organized competition at the collegiate level since the turn of the century when the National Collegiate Association For Athletics, (NCAA), was founded in 1905. The NCAA started out with a 13-school membership. On the other hand, the first time women had an opportunity to compete in a national collegiate tournament was in 1941 in golf. Prior to this, participation by,women was at the intramural, recreational level and even in these programs and events their involvement was minimal and confined to only a limited number …

Some Considerations Of Oral Reading In A Remedial Reading Program, Roberta K. Wright Jan 1983

Some Considerations Of Oral Reading In A Remedial Reading Program, Roberta K. Wright

Graduate Research Papers

It is understood that both oral reading and silent reading instruction are necessary functions of a successful reading program. It is also understood that silent and oral reading have many common skills although they represent different processes for the proficient reader. However, a remedial reading setting is not representative of proficient readers. The question to which this research review has been directed is: What are some potential uses of oral reading in a remedial reading setting with elementary age students who have reading problems? The concern of this paper is in areas in addition to the important role that oral …

Model For Kindergarten Orientation, Lillian Mae Frantz Jan 1983

Model For Kindergarten Orientation, Lillian Mae Frantz

Graduate Research Papers

There is a variation in the way children adjust to school as they enter with different levels of maturation. A basic factor in understanding the nature of children is the recognition that every child.is unique. Children are born with genetic variations that predispose them to be different in appearance, temperament, growth patterns and learning style. All of these factors are interrelated and interdependent and function as a unit to produce unique personalities. In terms of promoting competence, individuality dictates a tolerance and understanding of learning differences, a variety of approaches to teaching and learning in the classroom or at home, …

Reading Comprehension: Cloze Procedure Vs. Sustained Silent Reading In The Fourth Grade, Deborah Jo Barkley Jan 1983

Reading Comprehension: Cloze Procedure Vs. Sustained Silent Reading In The Fourth Grade, Deborah Jo Barkley

Graduate Research Papers

In Webster's Third New International Dictionary, Unabridged the term read is defined: "...To understand the meaning and grasp the full sense of...''; In this paper reading comprehension is the term used to describe this process. In the book Why Johnny Still Can't Read, by Rudolf Flesch, the author proposes that the only way to learn to read is by using phonics, a method used since the beginning of time. He states "The child learns the mechanics of reading, and when he's through he can read" (p.3). The method of look-and-say works differently. "The child is taught to read before he …

Investigation Of The Effect Of Television On Student Achievement, Charlotte A. Fiser Jan 1983

Investigation Of The Effect Of Television On Student Achievement, Charlotte A. Fiser

Graduate Research Papers

It has been observed by the researcher that during "sharing time" (activity where children bring things to show and tell about or share their experiences) many of the low achievers tell about television shows with much more frequency than high achievers. These accounts consistently deal with noneducational or commercial television. This led to the hypothesis that a negative correlation existed between noneducational television and student achievement. Concerning noneducational television, Schramm states that major studies show that television viewing tends to be associated with lower-than-average achievement. Television reduces reading time, social interaction time, and the opportunity to practice certain skills necessary …

The Effects Of Sustained Silent Reading On Low Achieving Second-Grade Readers' Interaction With Reading Material, Margaret Rose Bartell Jan 1983

The Effects Of Sustained Silent Reading On Low Achieving Second-Grade Readers' Interaction With Reading Material, Margaret Rose Bartell

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study investigated the effects of sustained silent reading (SSR) (Hunt, 1967) on low achieving, rural Midwestern second-grade readers' interaction with reading material. The purpose of this study was to determine if daily 10-minute periods of SSR significantly affected low achieving second-grade readers' choice of activities during daily free-time periods. It was expected that these subjects would choose to read more during free time as a result of exposure to daily periods of SSR. Additionally, the study examined the effect of SSR on their oral sharing after each daily SSR period. A multiple baseline design across individuals was employed to …
