The key question now confronting public education in America is how to provide more and better education in the coming decades for the school children of our country. The elementary school plays a vital role in the process of educating students. Elementary teachers, supervisors, and administrators must assume major responsibilities if the elementary school is to meet successfully today's critical challenges. Preparation for teaching elementary students is a process that is never completed. The elementary school exists for the purpose of providing instruction, therefore educators must strive continuously to upgrade instruction to stay relevant. To facilitate this idea within the …

The Single-Parent Father In Contemporary Society, Mary E. Crawford

Graduate Research Papers

The word "love" is perhaps the most widely used and abused term in the English language. We love our parents. We love our brothers and sisters. We love our pet and fruit, vegetables and meat, our home, and our car or truck. We love our country and flag. We love, both animate and inanimate objects. Human beings, today and throughout history, have had the need to love and to be loved. The search of finding or simply recognizing this love, first of all, and then giving and receiving love, is often a frightening experience. There also seems to be a …

Helping And Understanding The White-Collar, Middle Aged Male In The Industrial Setting, Trina E. Eitland

Graduate Research Papers

In today's industry, motivation is a primary factor in performance (Glueck, 1977). Motivation. not only comes into play with the extrinsic factors of the working conditions but also deals with the intrinsic factors of the individual in question. What happens when this person reaches his mid-forties? Industry is now realizing the humanistic side of working and has noticed an attitudinal change in their employees at this time of life. Production reports show the physical changes (i.e., production quotas go down) but what causes these changes? How does it affect industry and how can industry help their employees at middle age?

Improving Interpersonal Communication Skills: An Inservice Design For Iowa School Administrators, Troyce Lindaman Fisher Jan 1981

Improving Interpersonal Communication Skills: An Inservice Design For Iowa School Administrators, Troyce Lindaman Fisher

Graduate Research Papers

Recent studies have shown that the school principal is the pivotal person in determining the effectiveness of a school. (24:1) He or she has more influence over both the institutional and the individual dimensions that comprise the operations of the school than any other single participant in the educational enterprise. Newell (31:5) has suggested that the reason administrator relationships have such far-reaching effects on education is because the goals the administrator sets out to achieve are realized chiefly through other people. It is inherent to an administrator's effectiveness to nurture positive human relationships.

Relationship Between Size Of School And Least Preferred Coworker Score For Elementary School Principals, Stephen Carter Foster

Graduate Research Papers

In the complicated, subjective field of leadership, school administration ranks as one of the least well understood areas on the scale. Business, with their billions have been able to spend the money and the time examining leadership in the business environment and have established considerable data which, because of the lack of money and time in education, must be translated to our field before analysis. This translation occasionally diminishes the value of the results obtained from the research. For this reason, it is of major importance that educators adjust and apply some of the ideas developed in business to educational …

Over one fourth of the adolescents who drink are no longer classified as social drinkers, but are early, middle or late stage alcoholics. Eighty-three percent of the high school students drink alcohol, in varying amounts, with varying frequency. An estimated 25 percent abuse alcohol. By …

Selected Topics On Individualized Instruction, Wilmer Purvis Peeler Jan 1981

Selected Topics On Individualized Instruction, Wilmer Purvis Peeler

Graduate Research Papers

The formal development of individualized instructional programs in America began as a reaction against the age-graded lock-step system in which all students were constrained to study the same materials, in the same way, for the same length of time. Arguments for breaking down uniformity of instruction gained support with the appearance of instruments for measuring human abilities. It became clear that students differ not only in intelligence but in creativity. It also became clear that great differences between competence and performance are possible, and that inequalities in intellect, physical ability and social behavior, great in childhood, increase as students move …

The Life Management Project: A Comprehensive Treatment And Training Approach To Rehabilitation For Adult Offenders, Elaine Rose Penn Jan 1981

The Life Management Project: A Comprehensive Treatment And Training Approach To Rehabilitation For Adult Offenders, Elaine Rose Penn

Graduate Research Papers

In the past fifteen to twenty years, penal reform has undergone a structural and service model trend toward vocational training and counseling. In many state penal facilities inmates can now take advantage of vocational/technical training and even obtain external degrees through correspondence programs with local colleges and universities. There is a need to supplement these training efforts by preparing inmates emotionally and socially for the kinds of pressures they will face upon release. The high rates of recidivism, substance abuse and unemployment represented by the ex-offender population are highly indicative of the special needs of this group .

The Role Of The Elementary School Counselor In Child Abuse, Thomas George Petaros Jan 1981

The Role Of The Elementary School Counselor In Child Abuse, Thomas George Petaros

Graduate Research Papers

Child abuse has existed for as long as man has inhabited the earth. In spite of its long history, child abuse has only recently been recognized as a problem in need of investigation and study. In earlier ages, children were considered property of their parents. As with their property, parents were allowed to treat their children in any manner they desired. The children were left with few, if any, rights. In addition, the sole responsibility for child rearing was placed in the hands of the parents. Agencies were not available to take care of children if parents could not or …

A Comparison Of The Objectives Of Parents And Teachers For The Preschool Program, Marcia Davis Akin Jan 1981

A Comparison Of The Objectives Of Parents And Teachers For The Preschool Program, Marcia Davis Akin

Graduate Research Papers

During the last decade the number of children attending preschool has increased dramatically. Several factors have contributed to this growth. There is an increasingly popular attitude among parents of preschoolers that learning experiences provided by families can be beneficially supplemented by an organized preschool experience. This is somewhat an outgrowth of our increasingly achievement-oriented society. Parents hope to give their children a good …

However, since college and university environments are so rich and multi-dimensional, it may be more appropriate to center attention on the subenvironments. The college residence hall is one such subenvironment which has received considerable attention during the past decade.

Summer orientation programs are common means of registering new freshmen students at colleges and universities. Frequently, these programs also aim to affect perceptions and attitudes of their students toward the institution (Forrer, 1974). Black (1974: 102) states that orientation"...assists students to become better acquainted with a new educational environment." According to Robert H. Shaffer {1970: 7-121)"...the purpose of the orientation process might well be summarized as that of communicating to the student and all those influencing him what a college, a college education, and a college educated person are."

A Descriptive Survey Of Evaluation Methods Of High School Principals, Barry Robert Reese

Graduate Research Papers

The concept of formal evaluation of high school administrators has been afforded increased attention in recent years. With demands for accountability from the public sector and increasing pressures from within the profession, varying methods and practices have been sought to encapsulate this area. Even so, at the present time there is less than a clear picture of what, if anything, the public schools are doing in a systematic fashion in evaluating the performance of the secondary administrators, namely high school principals.

Counselor's Responsibilities And Student's Needs At The Junior High School Level, Ken H. Winter Jan 1981

Counselor's Responsibilities And Student's Needs At The Junior High School Level, Ken H. Winter

Graduate Research Papers

In the past decade, the necessity for a junior high school counselor seems to have increased more than ever before. Formerly, the child's needs were handled by the teacher through homeroom and classroom guidance programs (Baughman, 1974; Grambs, et. al., 1961). Gradually, socioeconomic forces of the past decades have encouraged a full time specialist, or the equivalent, available in guidance and testing for every 250 to 300 pupils in a junior high school (7th and 8th grades) (Conant, 1960; Tink, 1963).

A Review Of Special Class Placement Vs. Regular Class Placement And Its Relationship To Academic Achievement Of The Low Iq Student, Aleta Mary Leavens

Graduate Research Papers

Since the inception of special education in this country, many educators have elected to serve those children described as mentally retarded, emotionally disturbed, learning disabled, etc., ..• This investigation was aimed at those who are low functioning intellectually. Numerous such students have been identified, labeled, and placed in special programs outside of the regular classroom setting. The problem lies in the fact that the majority of special educators have blindly accepted specialized programs as a panacea to an ever-present dilemma. In the face of educators' suggested inability to deal effectively with "low IQ" students, they have been frequently segregated from …

Chaplin was to become an acknowledged 'king' of film comedy and no imitation could compete with his comedic style. The focus of this study is on the influences which combined to produce Chaplin's unique comedic talents. Chaplin was European-born (in London, 1819). His parents were both performers of …
