Secondary Science Training Programs - Enrichment For The High School Student (1971), Edward L. Pizzini
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
"I will transmit my fatherland not only less, but greater and better, than it was transmitted to me." The Environmental Science Program, a six-week field-oriented program dedicated to this philosophy, is one of four Secondary Science Training Programs (SSTP) which will be offered during the summer of 1971 at The University of Iowa for high school students.

How We Raise Paramecium, Easily, In Large Numbers, Eugene C. Bovee, Sandra C. Thompson, Mercedes L. Acuña
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
We use more Paramecium spp. in our Physiological Protozoology course at the University of Kansas than any other cells, and use them in great numbers each week, so that we wish to avoid the cost of buying them commercially. Therefore, we raise our own cultures. For over twenty years the senior author has used the easy method described here to raise large numbers of Paramecium aurelia, P. cauclatum, or P. multimicronucleatum, with consistent success.

Vertebrate Comparative Anatomy In Undergraduate Curricula 1969-70, Karl E. Goellner
Vertebrate Comparative Anatomy In Undergraduate Curricula 1969-70, Karl E. Goellner
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
In 1966 I presented a short paper describing some impressions of the status of vertebrate comparative anatomy (and embryology) in European universities (Goellner, 1968). Discussions which followed seemed to suggest that the status of these courses in the United States may be changing, and that a survey might elicit information on this matter. A basic assumption was implied, namely, that comparative anatomy had, indeed, been a traditional course in college offerings, particularly for zoology majors and for pre-medical and pre-dental students. This paper presents results of a modest survey conducted during the winter of 1969-70.

Iowa Upstep: A New Program In Science Education, Louis Gatta
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
At a time when knowledge is exponentially increasing and advances in pure science are being incorporated into an ever accelerating technological society, there exists a trend toward fewer and fewer adequately prepared science teachers. At a time when total enrollment in junior and senior high schools is reaching record breaking numbers, the enrollment in elective science courses is on the decline.
The Comparative Effects Of Individualized And Group Instruction In Bscs Biology On The Ability Of Students To Think Critically, Harry F. Fulton
The Comparative Effects Of Individualized And Group Instruction In Bscs Biology On The Ability Of Students To Think Critically, Harry F. Fulton
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Research in the area of critical thinking ability many times involves the use of the Watson and Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal (WGCTA). These abilities involve inference or drawing conclusions from facts or premises, recognition of assumptions or hypotheses, deduction or working from basic premises to conclusions, interpretation of data to derive or explain its meaning, and the evaluation of arguments or evidence. The items on this instrument are not specifically limited to science. As a result, when researching the effect of an instructional procedure in science, the teachers and all other subjects the students are exposed to need to be …

The Role Of Science In The Elementary School, Dean Halverson
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
For years we have taught science in the elementary school with little thought as to its role in light of the teachers and pupils in the schools. A successful program must be designed with their capabilities and interests in mind; therefore it is essential that we take a better look at the elementary teachers and their students.

Science Through Choice, Darrell G. Phillips

The young lady pictured on the front cover of this issue is deeply involved in structuring her own intellect. She is certainly finding out how particular things "work," but, more importantly she is using her own mind to plan next steps, to explore possibilities and to make decisions. Such intense involvement in learning is not at all uncommon, but this particular situation is highly unique-unique because it is taking place in a science classroom in a public school!
Environmental Education In The Environment, Michael J. Naylon
Environmental Education In The Environment, Michael J. Naylon

Man, the thinking animal, is an observer of events in the universe. He has conceded the obvious truth of his uniqueness on this planet and his religions charge him with its stewardship. However, the very quality which distinguishes him from other life forms has also proven to be his greatest weakness. Perception is a personal experience; its very nature mandates that it be point-centered in the universe. That point is the individual. Collective man is guilty of assuming that the universe "happens" around him. He has not effectively perceived that he is a happening in the universe. He has compounded …
A Study Of The Development Of Student Attitudes In Two Approaches To Teaching Bscs Biology, Harry F. Fulton
A Study Of The Development Of Student Attitudes In Two Approaches To Teaching Bscs Biology, Harry F. Fulton
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
When a student enters a science class at the start of the semester, how often does the science teacher consider the student's attitude toward science? Usually our concern is about his background in science, his intelligence, or if he will be a discipline problem. These areas are perhaps important but a study by DeRose (2) also reveals the importance of attitude. He indicates that the achievement of students in a particular class may depend to a large extent on the attitude of students toward that class.

The Acs-Nsta Cooperative High School Chemistry Examinations, Albert J. Judge, Charles W. Hendrickson
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Teachers of chemistry have available an evaluative tool used extensively throughout the nation to measure the end-of-year achievement of high school chemistry students. This instrument is the ACS-NSTA Cooperative High School Chemistry Examination. The National High School Testing Program under the direction of Professor Theodore A. Ashford has made available to high school teachers a series of widely used ACS-NSTA Cooperative Chemistry Examinations. It is estimated that over a million and a half high school students have been tested since the first ACS-NSTA High School Chemistry Examination appeared in the late 1950s.

The role of a modern Anatomy department is threefold (Metcalf, 1970): 1. To teach anatomy and its sub-disciplines, gross anatomy, neuroanatomy, microscopic anatomy and embryology, to people who wish to learn it. 2. To advance the science of anatomy-the structural basis of function. 3. To train graduate students for a future role as anatomy faculty.

Because no appropriation was made by the state legislature during 1971 for support of the Academy, the Journal will be issued only three times during 1971- 72.

When developing a concept in class, I think all teachers realize the importance of taking into account the attention span of their students. One report I read felt that most college students can maintain a good 30-minute attention span, whereas seventh grade students can only average a period of four to five minutes of concentration on a speaker.

Paramecia Affected By Leaf Extracts, M. Bley, B. Frenchick, K. Smith

Leaves and needles from deciduous and coniferous trees play a major role in the formation of soil in their respective forests and thus help to determine the type of life that can successfully live there. Because of the known effects of leaf and needle litter on larger invertebrate life, earthworms, millipedes, etc., it was decided to experiment with infusions of paramecia derived from both leaves and needles to see if they were similarly affected.
