The New Student Wellness Survey (NSWS) was first implemented in Fall 2013 based on the University’s focus on student wellness and Dr. Shipp’s philosophy of being “intentionally intrusive” to improve student wellbeing and experience at UNO. The survey initially consisted of 22 questions that covered the 8 areas of wellness, program completion information, and supplemental information. After the first year, we re-evaluated the survey, and expanded it to 35 possible questions and made many of the new questions dynamic or open text fields.

The Survey: The New Student Wellness Survey (NSWS) is a 35 question survey completed by new incoming students as part of the Orientation sign up process. The questionnaire captures student perceptions on the 8areas of wellness: Emotional, Financial, Intellectual, Occupational, Physical, Social, Spiritual and Environmental,as well as supplemental information. The NSWS was first implemented in the fall semester of 2013, and 2015 is the third consecutive year that this project has been worked on. Results from this year are consistent with previous findings.

While in principal the committee concurs with the vast majority of the recommendations from the self-study provided by the ACDC staff, it is abundantly clear that few if any of the recommendations will be sustained in either the short-term or the long-term unless there is a clear and articulated statement from the senior administration of the university (cabinet-level) signaling it’s support for and promotion of the importance and centrality of academic advising and career development as integral elements of the university’s strategic plan.

Each year the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) asks students at hundreds of colleges and universities to reflect on the time they devote to various learning activities. The topics explored are linked to previous research on student success in college. UNO also participated in the Academic Advising module, which examines students’ experiences with academic advising, including frequency of use, accessibility, information provided, and primary source of advice. This report reviews the 2013 results for the university, compares the finding with our past results, and describes actions taken and proposed in response to the findings.
