The Voice Of Elementary School Principals On School Climate, Suzanne Elayne Scallion May 2010

The Voice Of Elementary School Principals On School Climate, Suzanne Elayne Scallion

Open Access Dissertations

School climate has been described as "the set of internal characteristics that distinguish one school from another and influence the behaviors of each school's members" (Hoy, Smith & Sweetland, 2005). In the landmark study by Brookover, Schneider, Beady, Flood and Wisebaker (1978), school climate was found to be a more significant factor in student achievement than the variables of race and socioeconomic status. Principals need training in the phenomena of school climate and to develop the skills needed to alter it as needed for the benefit of students. This phenomenological study explored the conceptual understanding of school climate by experienced …

The Tactical Games Model Sport Experience: An Examination Of Student Motivation And Game Performance During An Ultimate Frisbee Unit, Eric John Carpenter May 2010

The Tactical Games Model Sport Experience: An Examination Of Student Motivation And Game Performance During An Ultimate Frisbee Unit, Eric John Carpenter

Open Access Dissertations

Students benefit from positive sport experiences in physical education. If designed well, sport provides a social avenue for physical activity and strengthens student achievement in psychomotor (e.g., motor skill), cognitive (e.g., decision-making), and affective (e.g., personal and social responsibility) learning domains. Unfortunately, not all students receive quality sport instruction and many students fail to have positive sport experiences in physical education. The Tactical Games Model (TGM, Griffin, Mitchell, & Oslin, 1997) is an instructional model focused on improving student sport experiences. As a constructivist approach to teaching and learning sport, TGM reshapes sport lessons to allow students to experience small-sided …

This research study examined the long-term effects of a professional development study tour to Southeast Asia that took place in 2001. Engaging Students In Mathematics Conversations: Discourse Practices And The Development Of Social And Socialmathematical Norms In Three Novice Teachers' Classrooms, Mary T. Grassetti Feb 2010

Engaging Students In Mathematics Conversations: Discourse Practices And The Development Of Social And Socialmathematical Norms In Three Novice Teachers' Classrooms, Mary T. Grassetti

Open Access Dissertations

Research on learning to teach mathematics reveals that mathematics teaching is a complex process (Lerman, 2000) and classroom teaching and learning is a “multifaceted, extraordinarily complex phenomenon” (O’Connor, 1998, p. 43). Moreover, research reveals that the mathematics reform agenda has had an impact on what happens in the mathematics classroom, however, the impact has been superficial (Kazemi & Stipek, 2001) with teachers often retaining their pre-reform habits and attitudes in regards to mathematics teaching and learning (O’Connor, 1998). This study examined the reform discourse practices that three novice teachers, who had been enrolled in a reform based methods course during …

Teaching For Social Justice With Standards-Based Secondary English Language Arts Curriculum, Alison George Dover Feb 2010

Teaching For Social Justice With Standards-Based Secondary English Language Arts Curriculum, Alison George Dover

Doctoral Dissertations 1896 - February 2014

Teaching for social justice is the attempt by classroom teachers to use their position in the classroom to promote social and educational reform within and despite current educational conditions and mandates. However, while a growing number of K-12 teachers have published anecdotal reports of their attempts to teach for social justice in secondary classrooms (e.g., Bender-Slack, 2007; Christensen, 2000; Singer, 2005), there is great variability among these accounts, and scant evaluation of their impact on specific academic, behavioral/motivational, and attitudinal outcomes (see Grant & Agosto, 2008; Kelly & Brandes, 2008; Poplin & Rivera, 2005).

This qualitative study addresses this research …

Theatre Of The Oppressed A Manual For Educators, Gopal Midha Jan 2010

Theatre Of The Oppressed A Manual For Educators, Gopal Midha

Master's Capstone Projects

Promoting social equity and justice, I think, are not just important but essential qualities in a good educator. My experience as a graduate student at University of Massachusetts helped me understand and practice different ways in which this could be done. For instance, I learnt how I could promote social justice through changes in curriculum, co-operative learning, inter-group dialogues or multicultural education. However, my search was for a method that did not require literacy as a pre-requisite and that went beyond mere conversations about social justice. One of the key elements of the power structures which lead to oppression, I …

Rethinking Reiche, Tracie J. Reed

Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014

Part I of the study examines the differences between two environmental assessment methods for the K‐12 education sector: the United States Green Building Council’s (USGBC) LEED Schools Version 3.0 and the British Research Establishment’s (BRE) BREEAM Education issue 2.0. Credit requirements are compared side‐by‐side and against recommendations from researchers in areas such as acoustics, lighting and indoor environment quality. Strengths in the two schemes and areas for improvement are highlighted, with acknowledgement that each scheme offers components and techniques from which the other could benefit. Part II of the study introduces the Howard C. Reiche Community School in Portland, Maine. …

Bully Victim Identification And Intervention Program For School Nurses, Nora Zinan

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

School nurses see bullies and their victims as visitors to the health office with physical and emotional symptoms. Yet school nurses feel unprepared and unqualified to deal with bullying issues. They are not included as team members in the whole school approach to bullying prevention. METHOD: Eleven school nurses from Greenfield, Northampton and the Union #38 School district participated in The Bully Victim Identification and Intervention Program for School Nurses. Participants completed the Perceptions of Bullying Questionnaire (Hendershot, Dake, Price & Larty, 2006) prior to the training, immediately following the training and 1 month after the training.
