Evidence-based school counseling (EBSC) has too often been an approach defined by student-centered interventions delivered from a deficit perspective. What would happen if we stepped back and applied the same lens to the systems that are creating the barriers to student success in the first place? For example, the disproportionality of behavior referrals and suspensions of BIPOC populations is a data point that illustrates a system issue. How would the EBSC lens offer ways to deconstruct that system?
