The purpose of this research project was to investigate the effectiveness of after school detention as a disciplinary tool for handling student misbehavior at school. Detention is defined as holding a student during their own free time, such as after school. The subjects of the study were problematic students assigned to detention for inappropriate behavior, i.e. violating a school rule or regulation.
As a school practitioner conducted this research the study highlights the practitioner's perspective for effective student discipline management in developing and maintaining a positive school climate. In many regards, the study was meant to provide information to the …
Beyond Survival: A Case Study Of The Milwaukee Urban Waldorf School, Phaizon Rhys Wood
Beyond Survival: A Case Study Of The Milwaukee Urban Waldorf School, Phaizon Rhys Wood
Doctoral Dissertations
Schooling has often provided possibilities for the practice of freedom with respect to the education of African-American children but has, at the same time, represented a threat to their system of survival. Hale (cited in Hale-Benson, 1990) believes that what is needed is an education that provides cultural continuity - not intervention. The challenge is to provide an effective education - one that can "conceptualize Black children within the context of their culture" (p. 210).
The literature review that follows provides the foundation for the argument that a model already exists that is emancipatory in its original design, that identifies …

Transitions To U.S. Private Schools: Perceptions Of Six Immigrant Elementary School Boys, Philip Manwell
Doctoral Dissertations
"The United States is faced with the privilege and challenge of educating immigrant children, not only in a second language and other skills, but also in the many and varied dimensions of life in this country" (London, 1990; p. 287).
Whether these children have fled rigid dictatorial regimes or wars, whether they came to the U.S. directly or spent time in refugee camps or detention centers, whether they have little more than what they are wearing at the time, or their families have planned the migration carefully, leaving their countries of origin legally and peacefully, bringing currency and the promise …

This research examines the investment policies and practices of California social service and advocacy organizations by investigating the level of complexity of their investment activities and whether the mission of their organization is taken under consideration, as a social investment screen, when making investment decisions.
The nonprofit sector is an essential and influential part of our society as well as our economy. The management of this sector's growing assets is of key importance to its long-term financial stability.
