How I Learned To Drive By Paula Vogel, School Of Performing Arts

How I Learned to Drive by Paula Vogel premiered on March 16,1997 Off-Broadway at the Vineyard Theatre. Vogel received the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for the work. It was written and developed at the Perseverance Theatre Juneau, Alaska, Molly Smith, artistic Director. The story follows the strained, sexual relationship between Li'l Bit and her aunt's husband, Uncle Peck, from her adolescence through her teenage years into college and beyond. Using the metaphor of driving and the issues of pedophilia, incest, and misogyny, the play explores the ideas of control and manipulation.

Professor Keeling is a new PhD from CU-Boulder who will be joining CMJ for a one-year, fixed-length appointment starting in Fall 2012. She is an outstanding and innovative young scholar. CMJ is bringing her to campus to share research from her dissertation, which is focused on reconceptualizing the relationship between language, image, and the body. Posthumanist philosophy challenges pre-existing divisions assumed between the body and symbols in contemporary rhetorical theory. Professor Keeling's research agenda is …

I am requesting funding for Dr. Vaughn Bryant's recent visit (March 19-21) to UMaine where he met with a diversity of researchers across campus and presented two lectures on his areas of expertise. Vaughn is Professor of Anthropology and Director of the Palynology Laboratory at Texas A&M University. He is internationally known for his research in forensic pollen analysis, prehistoric diet reconstruction, honey research, and in the reconstruction of paleoenvironments. Dr. Bryant conducts extensive forensic palynological investigations for the CIA, DOE, and Customs and Border Protection (CBP). He pioneered efforts in three new and emerging areas of pollen research including: …

Since earning his MFA from Yale University, Gideon Bok has gone on to receive a 2004 John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship as well as the Hassam, Speicher, Betts, and Symons Fund Purchase Award through The American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2005. Gideon has received extensive reviews ín The New York Times, Time Out New York, ARTnews, Art New England, and The Boston Globe. Alpha Gallery in Boston represents him currently. The John M. Rezendes Visiting Scholar in Ethics Series was first hosted by the Honors College during the 2002-2003 academic year, coinciding with the Honors College's inauguration. Since then, the Honors College has selected, invited, and coordinated visits of scholars who have addressed ethical issues of national importance on an annual basis. Each year, the selected speaker is asked to conduct seminars, meet with University of Maine students, and present a public lecture which the entire student body and the public at large is encouraged to attend. Thomas Gansch is one of the most recognizable trumpeters in the world today. As the lead trumpet/singer in the Austrian cult brass ensemble, Mnozil Brass, he has performed in over 40 countries and has become a YouTube legend for the Mnozil Brass cover of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody. Gansch is also the co-composer of two Mnozil Brass operettas (German language theater pieces), which have been performed throughout Germany and Austria, including as part of the famous Salzburg Festival, and the stage of Berliner Ensemble, founded by Bertold Brecht.

IN 2006, the Clinical Psychology Diversity Committee was established in order to develop more consistency within the clinical psychology department in terms of the amount of attention paid to diversity issues across courses, research programs, clinical settings, and individual students. Since then, the diversity committee has been heavily involved in the enhancement of efforts to recruit and retain ethnically and culturally diverse faculty and students (graduate and undergraduate) in both the psychology program, and university-wide. Additionally, we seek to expand links with external practicum placements that serve diverse populations, while also establishing working relationships with diversity related groups on campus. …

This proposal requests $600 in support of our effort to bring Maine Poet Laureate Wesley McNair to campus for a two-day visit Spring 2012 semester, most likely on a Wednesday-Thursday in April. McNair has expressed enthusiastic interest in doing a multi-media public presentation and book signing, as well as visiting Maine literature and creative writing courses and meeting informally with creative writing students. The English Department through the Lloyd Elliott fund and the University Bookstore will be contributing to the cost of this visit; the DLS grant would fund the portion of the honorarium devoted to the public presentation.

Communication & Journalism will bring Greg Goodale, Associate Professor of Rhetoric at Northeastern University, to campus for a lecture and a class visit in Spring of 2012, April2-3. Professor Goodale is an emerging star in the study of rhetoric, in particular on the place of sound in Communication. His 201 I book, Sonic Persuasion: Reading Sound in the Recorded Age, is groundbreaking. For his visit, Professor Goodale will present from his book in the CMJ Spring Colloquium Series on Monday, April 2. On Tuesday, he will guest teach in CMJ 201 (introduction to rhetorical theory) on sound and violence.
