The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of simultaneously guided television viewing and script reading on the comprehension and vocabulary scores of twenty academically weak seventh grade students. This study investigated the effectiveness of a structured sentence-combining/sentence-reduction program used to instruct fifth graders of average to above average reading ability. The primary purpose was to determine whether significant differences occurred between the performances of a treatment and control group on measures of writing maturity and reading comprehension. Writing performances of both groups on a Syntactic Maturity Test were analyzed using t-unit analysis. This thesis examines the role of the media—particularly journalists—in sparking school reform. The author paints a grim picture of struggling schools, attributing growing issues of school violence to poor administration, school secrecy, and corruption. This study attempted to identify modality preferences through a simultaneous presentation of auditory and visual stimuli. To achieve this purpose, a new paradigm for modal preference testing was designed. Thirty second grade students, all experiencing some reading difficulty, were exposed to a total of three treatments. All the treatments visually presented a series of five numbers while at the same time five different digits were being presented aurally. This study investigated the auditory processing abilities of emotionally disturbed children. Areas examined were: auditory discrimination, auditory sequential memory, auditory closure, and auditory selective attention.

Subjects were given four tests used to measure auditory processing: The Wepman Test of Auditory

Discrimination; The Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities, auditory sequential memory and auditory closure subtests; and a professionally prepared dichotic listening tape.

The results of this study showed that although not all emotionally disturbed children have auditory processing problems, there is a tendency for a problem to occur in at least one area of auditory processing.
