Spiritual Fit: Spirituality's Impact On Retention At A Faith Based Institution, Crystal Keetch Jan 2012

Spiritual Fit: Spirituality's Impact On Retention At A Faith Based Institution, Crystal Keetch

Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses

With the growing pressures on higher education institutions, schools are increasingly focusing their attention on issues surrounding retention and persistence. Since many religious institutions are tuition-driven, when students leave the institution, these institutions are losing revenue. Religiously-based institutions are often centered on a mission that impacts students’ spiritual growth along with their academic growth. At these types of institutions, students’ feelings of spiritual fit within the institution impacted their attrition. Based on Tinto’s (1993) theory of student departure, this study looked at fit within the institution. This study utilized a mixed method design to examine the relationship between persistence and …

The Impact Of A Ministry Experience On The Personal And Academic Development Of College Students, Benjamin Goller Jan 2012

The Impact Of A Ministry Experience On The Personal And Academic Development Of College Students, Benjamin Goller

Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses

The purpose of this study is to seek out how a ministry experience can be a developmental tool for academic and student development professionals to cultivate growth in the personal and academic areas of students’ lives. Rooted in the academic literature on service-learning and college student spirituality, this study asks how a ministry experience affects students, what part of the experience has the effect, and how students view and understand this development. By interviewing students in a ministry practicum at a small, Christian liberal arts university in the Midwest, themes were drawn out that identified core processes of the ministry …

The Conceptualization Of Faith-Learning Integration In Student Affairs, Andrew R. Lehr Jan 2012

The Conceptualization Of Faith-Learning Integration In Student Affairs, Andrew R. Lehr

Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses

This study, part of a larger, multi-institutional investigation, examines how student affairs educators both conceptualize and practice faith-learning integration in their work in faith-based higher education. Based on the influence of authors such as Holmes (1987), Garber (1997), Hughes (2005), Hauerwas (2007), and Smith (2009), integrating faith into students’ educational journeys encourages whole-person development throughout the university environment. This study examines the practices of exemplary student affairs professionals to reveal how these educators conceptualize and implement faith-learning integration outside of traditional classrooms. Findings resulted in a rich understanding of the concepts and practices of integration. Concepts included student affairs translations …

Spiritual Expectations And Experiences Of Students At A Faith-Based Institution, Jessica A. Fankhauser

Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses

Part of a larger, multi-faceted research project, this study looked at the expectations of spiritual growth among college freshmen and the experiences of spiritual growth among college seniors through a qualitative modified grounded theory approach in an effort to answer the question, “What elements of the college experience are most influential in facilitating students’ expectations and realizations of spiritual growth?” Eighty-four freshmen and 171 senior essays were collected at a small faith-based liberal arts institution in the Mid-west. Results from the study suggest that students’ expectations play a significant role in their experiences of spiritual development. Freshmen students’ indicated a …

Finding Meaning And Recovery After The Death Of A Friend During College, Jessica L. Cuthbert Jan 2012

Finding Meaning And Recovery After The Death Of A Friend During College, Jessica L. Cuthbert

Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses

Literature reports that death is a part of everyday life, and bereavement can be considered a normal life occurrence. It is astounding to think that something classified as normal ignites such pain and brokenness. This study brings much meaning and depth to one of the most painful experiences a college student can encounter. Six years after a tragic accident at a small liberal arts school took the life of four students, this research discloses the stories of six survivor friends who lost a close friend in the accident through phenomenological research. In their own words, six survivor friends report that …

The Experience Of Evangelical College Women In Disclosing Taboo Sexual Practices Among Peers, Taylor A. Ehrhard

Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses

The current research aimed to better understand young women on Christian campuses who struggle sexually. The following research question guided the study: What is the experience of young women on Evangelical campuses who establish transparency regarding their taboo sexual practices within their peer relationships? The researcher interviewed seven students at a small, private, faith-based institution for the study. The researcher utilized semi-structured interviews and analyzed them using a grounded theory approach. Through the interviews, results emerged under five major themes heard in each story and five minor themes that proved significant in some stories, though not communicated by each participant. …

A Vision For General Education: The Life And Mind Of Ernest L. Boyer, Maria E. Lehr

Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses

General education has always been an integral part of the college experience. It is at the very heart of what it means to be a liberal arts institution. Currently this curriculum is being revamped, revitalized and even questioned at many institutions. Many programs lack purpose and goals behind the curriculum. Ernest Boyer, through his work at the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, created a unique vision and displayed exemplary passion for core curriculum in general education. This study focuses on Boyer's professional publications and highlights his work in higher education curriculum. His published works on general education through …

Some Of The Early Story: The Beginnings Of The Association For Christians In Student Development, David M. Johnstone Jan 2012

Some Of The Early Story: The Beginnings Of The Association For Christians In Student Development, David M. Johnstone

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

A reasonable critique of American student affairs is that the profession does not utilize its heritage and history. The profession leans heavily on the praxis of its responsibilities to the detriment that it has a long history and those who worked diligently in years past have made what happens today possible. The Association for Christians in Student Development has a significant history. Some of it parallels contemporary culture, while some of it is unique. However, the current association reflects the vision of early “pioneers.” This article seeks to begin filling the gap, provide a sense of how the association arose …

What About The “T’S”?: Addressing The Needs Of A Transgender Student At A Cccu Member Institution, Scott Barrett, Philip D. Byers, David M. Downey, Eric M. Gingerich Jan 2012

What About The “T’S”?: Addressing The Needs Of A Transgender Student At A Cccu Member Institution, Scott Barrett, Philip D. Byers, David M. Downey, Eric M. Gingerich

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

As the discussion of the LGBT community continues to evolve and inform decisions at higher education institutions, evidence suggests the “T”–transgender–discussion at CCCU institutions has remained stagnant and largely unrecognized. In June 2011 ACSD’s New Professionals Collaborative asked professionals to present a case study on how a CCCU institution would house a transgender student who had already been admitted into the institution. The authors found the literature on the subject to be sparse, and within the Christian context it is nearly nonexistent. The few precedents and best practices on housing a transgender student do not appear to align with the …

Experiences Of Gay And Lesbian Students Attending Faith-Based Colleges: Considerations For Improving Practice, Joel M. Wentz, Roger D. Wessel Jan 2012

Experiences Of Gay And Lesbian Students Attending Faith-Based Colleges: Considerations For Improving Practice, Joel M. Wentz, Roger D. Wessel

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

The intent of this 2010 qualitative, phenomenological study was to understand the experiences of undergraduates who identified as gay/lesbian in faith-based colleges. Some of the issues students encountered were identity denial, perceptions of homosexuality on campus, exposure to off-campus cultures, concealing sexual identity, establishing a peer support network, and reconciling faith and sexual identity. Participants discussed support from faculty/staff, counseling services, school policies, male residence hall culture, and perceptions of administrators. Considerations for improving practice include making informed enrollment decisions, supporting sexual identity formation during college, reconciling faith and sexual identity, encouraging supportive networks, and developing policies regarding campus sexual …
