The screen settings tested were a blue-light-minimizing setting, screen brightness, and a combination of both. A blue-light-minimizing setting alters the monitor color settings to minimize the amount of blue used in the projection of the computer screen. The effect of room darkness in combination with these screen settings was also considered. The field experiment had four research questions: Is there a difference in achievement between students who use a …

Minnesota Teachers’ Understanding, Training, Perception Of Stem Education And Its Implementation, Abdulcadir Mohamud Aug 2019

Minnesota Teachers’ Understanding, Training, Perception Of Stem Education And Its Implementation, Abdulcadir Mohamud

Culminating Projects in Education Administration and Leadership

According to the CRS Report for Congress (Library of Congress, 2008), “there is a growing concern that the United States is not preparing a sufficient number of students to enter in the professions of science and engineering.” This growing concern has motivated the creation of a discipline based on the integration of science, technology, engineering and mathematics known as STEM. The supporters of STEM education believe that this program has more benefits than the traditional system, an obsolete system that fails to capture students’ interest in STEM subjects (Sanders, 2009).

Unfortunately, there are barriers in successfully implementing STEM programs in …

Faculty Of Color At Predominantly White Colleges And Universities, Dalton Crayton

Culminating Projects in Education Administration and Leadership

Although the United States has experienced major demographic changes, such as an increased population of minorities, there still exists a very low representation of minority faculty members in institutions of higher education compared to White faculty members (Antonino, 2002).

There are very few studies that detail the challenges and supports that qualified persons of color experience in obtaining positions in higher education. Therefore, there is a need for further research to identify these challenges and supports that faculty members of color experience to provide insights for other faculty members of color who are pursuing employment at an institution of higher …

In 1972, the federal law Title IX altered the path toward equity and equal opportunity for girls and women in education and sport. Despite this legislation, the journey towards equality continues forty-seven years later. While support, opportunity, and growth for women in sport has increased, the decline and underrepresentation of female head coaches in collegiate athletics has decreased. Similar to the overall decline of collegiate female head coaches, women’s collegiate ice hockey at the NCAA Division I level has also experienced a decline and underrepresentation of female head coaches. While there is research on the decline of women coaches, there …

From Community College Faculty To Dean: Using Schlossberg’S Transition Theory To Understand The Transition Experience., Derrick D. Lindstrom

Culminating Projects in Higher Education Administration

Succession planning and the pending vacancies in leadership are both important topics in higher education in general and community colleges specifically. Faculty have historically played an important role in filling the leadership pipeline in community colleges, with the first step in this transition being from faculty to academic deans. However, there is little research focused on the role of the academic dean, let alone that transition from faculty to administration, in the community college setting. The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand the perceptions of faculty who have transitioned into academic dean roles on two-year college campuses. Through …

Primary Factors Impacting Burnout In Special Education Teachers, Jenna Kulberg

Culminating Projects in Special Education

Many factors may lead to burnout of special education teachers. Teachers are faced with overwhelming caseloads, student behaviors, job duties, and a history that has been inconsistent with appropriate supports for students with special needs. The studies that were reviewed offered information that directly correlated with burnout. There was much focus on the three areas addressed by the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Educator Survey (MBI-ES). The three areas of burnout according to this survey were emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishments. Studies completed showed tendencies towards the emotional exhaustion being directly related to the highest rate of reasons for burnout among special …

The Relationship Between Overrepresentation Of Minority Students And Explicit And Implicit Bias, Robyn Peterson May 2019

The Relationship Between Overrepresentation Of Minority Students And Explicit And Implicit Bias, Robyn Peterson

Culminating Projects in Special Education

The disproportionality of minority students referred to or qualifying for special education exceeds the number of minority students in the total school population. Many minority students will receive special education services in a secluded program or classroom. It can prevent students from receiving the appropriate education guaranteed to them. A teacher’s explicit or implicit bias could be a factor in determining the reason why disproportionality of minority students is referred to or qualify for special education services. The research indicated a trend on the over-representation of minority students being referred to or receiving special education services. However, the research on …

The Impact Of Restorative Practices On Discipline Data And Procedures In Schools, Nicole Raffenbeul May 2019

The Impact Of Restorative Practices On Discipline Data And Procedures In Schools, Nicole Raffenbeul

Culminating Projects in Special Education

Research has indicated that behavior within the classroom has become a top priority in education. Many students lack the skills necessary to navigate the school climate in a pro-social and constructive way. As policies changed towards more punitive methods, there was an increase in the achievement gap for students at-risk. However, students are not learning new skills to impact behavioral patterns, nor are they learning academic skills to succeed when removed from the classroom. Restorative practices are an alternative to traditional discipline procedures that provide skills to negotiate conflict, allow for student voice, and create community for all students. Overall …

The Importance Of Self-Determination Interventions For Transition-Age Youth With Disabilities, Clista Bradford

Culminating Projects in Special Education

Studies were selected in order to determine if they supported the importance of self-determination for transition age youth with disabilities. All of the studies indicated that higher self-determination levels and self-determination skills are beneficial to individuals. The intervention-specific studies were especially promising. Students who were taught a specific self-determination curriculum experienced higher self-determination levels, higher quality of life ratings, higher levels of employment, and higher levels of community access. These studies suggest the importance of self-determination on future outcomes of students; however, the manner and degree of impact needs to be further explored with consideration to the multiple personal and …

Cell Phones In Minnesota High Schools: Principals’ Perceptions Of Impact And Policy, David Holler May 2019

Cell Phones In Minnesota High Schools: Principals’ Perceptions Of Impact And Policy, David Holler

Culminating Projects in Education Administration and Leadership

As cell phone use has become commonplace in society, school leaders have debated the positive and negative impacts of permitting cell phone use in schools (Kiema, 2015). In 2015, New York City public schools removed their cell phone ban for 1.1 million students (Allen, 2015). A reason for reversing the ban was that the policy had a disproportionate impact on low students who were more likely to have their cell phones confiscated because of metal detectors in the schools they attended (Allen, 2015). The New York City cell phone ban also proved extremely difficult to consistently and effectively enforce (Allen, …

Component Analysis Of The Cool Vs. Not Cool Procedure, Mary Yoo

Culminating Projects in Community Psychology, Counseling and Family Therapy

One of the characteristics of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder is the inability to develop the social skills needed to develop meaningful relationships. Several behavior programs have been developed to effectively teach a variety of necessary social skills. One of these programs has been proven to be effective with children with autism is the cool versus not cool procedure. There is a growing body of research that has demonstrated its effectiveness to helping teach appropriate social behaviors to individuals in this population (Au et al., 2016; Leaf et al., 2012; Leaf et al., 2015; Leaf, Leaf et al., 2016). The conventional DTT approach used a conventional approach, which is a method of balancing the trial order and location of at least three stimuli in a teaching session. In contrast, the progressive approach DTT allowed the teacher to be flexible and assess in the moment the trial order. Using an alternating treatment design replicated for three sets and three participants, the results showed that progressive DTT was the most efficient and effective procedure for …

Factors Affecting American Indian Student Persistence In Attending A Northern Minnesota Tribal College, Delana Smith May 2019

Factors Affecting American Indian Student Persistence In Attending A Northern Minnesota Tribal College, Delana Smith

Culminating Projects in Education Administration and Leadership

Recruitment of American Indian students into college and universities has been a long-standing challenge, but retaining these students, especially those from reservations, highlights an even greater challenge. According to Guillory and Wolverton (2008), “Although a select few have successfully matriculated through higher education’s colleges and universities, institutions cannot truthfully claim success when it comes to serving this unique population” (p. 58). American Indian students are more likely to feel academically inadequate, isolated, and alienated. Many times, academic inadequacy, isolation, marginalization, or other factors became too much for them to overcome. As a result, many American Indian students leave college before …

Blended Learning Among Adult English As A Second Language Programs, Brigid Erickson May 2019

Blended Learning Among Adult English As A Second Language Programs, Brigid Erickson

Culminating Projects in Education Administration and Leadership

The rationale for the study stems from the need to explore blended learning in Adult Basic Education ESL programs as it develops as a new practice (Rosen & Stewart, 2015). Even though blended learning has been used in some K-12 schools for much longer than Adult Basic Education programs, it is not enough for leadership to make program decisions based on what is happening in typical K-12 schools. English as a Second Language (ESL) programs within Adult Basic Education programs have their own needs and “students today are electronically connected, and they expect their learning to be connected as well” …

The purpose of the mixed method study was to identify the perceptions of challenges Minnesota female superintendents report they experienced in seeking and serving in the position of superintendent of schools, including their perception regarding school-board superintendent relations. The study used both qualitative and quantitative methods: the researcher designed the research questions based upon the underrepresentation of females in the superintendency and the literature review. Data collection included two phases: 1) a multiple-choice survey distributed to survey respondents through electronic mail; and 2) open-ended interviews conducted with four volunteer interviewees. The multiple-choice survey provided quantitative information while the open-ended response …

Teachers’ Perceptions Of 1:1 Technology Integration In Select Minnesota Secondary Schools, Anthony Greene May 2019

Teachers’ Perceptions Of 1:1 Technology Integration In Select Minnesota Secondary Schools, Anthony Greene

Culminating Projects in Education Administration and Leadership

Abstract

While understanding and implementing technology integration in the education setting has significantly improved in the past few decades, little has been done to formulate a research-based best practice model that will follow a set of standards maintained by ISTE. Integration can be most successfully achieved through following a set of standards established by The International Society for Technology in Education - Standards for Educators. According to Ertmer (2015), teachers are expected to enrich teaching and learning, despite a number of barriers that impede them such as lack of training, staff support, and hardware and software access. These continue to …
