Michael J. Stebleton

The purpose of this study was to examine student-faculty and peer interactions among immigrant college students attending 4-year research universities in the United States. Using the Student Experience in the Research University (SERU) completed by 58,000 students from six research universities, the researchers used analysis of variance and multiple linear regression analysis to explore differences between immigrant populations. The results suggest that there are significant differences between immigrant and non-immigrant college students in terms of sense of belonging, faculty interactions, and peer interactions. There are also differences within immigrant waves and generational status. Implications and recommendations for educators in multicultural …

Reaching Out, Connecting Within: Community Service And Sense Of Belonging Among College Students, Krista M. Soria, Jordan N. Troisi, Michael J. Stebleton

Michael J. Stebleton

This study examined the relationship between students’ participation in community service and their sense of belonging on campus. Furthermore, the study explored whether the ways in which students become involved in community service yield different associations with their sense of belonging. Using the Student Experience in the Research University survey administered to students at 12 large, public research universities in 2010, it was discovered that general participation in service and becoming involved in service through student organizations, fraternities or sororities, and university departments are positively associated with students’ sense of belonging; finding service opportunities on one’s own is negatively associated …

Unhu/Ubuntu And Education For Reconciliation In Zimbabwe, Oswell Hapanyengwi-Chemhuru, Edward Shizha Jan 2012

Unhu/Ubuntu And Education For Reconciliation In Zimbabwe, Oswell Hapanyengwi-Chemhuru, Edward Shizha

Edward Shizha

The paper examines the concept, strengths and shortcomings, role and implementation of the reconciliation policy as Zimbabwe emerged from periods of conflict crisis soon after independence in the 1980s, and the current crisis in the 2000s and how the policy can be introduced in schools through „education for reconciliation‟. The authors argue that education can be used to cultivate reconciliation and national healing in the evidently „wounded‟ people of Zimbabwe who bear scars of colonial times and war, and the post-independence conflicts. Reconciliation through education for “diversity” and tolerance makes a compelling argument in so far as we understand how …

Reclaiming And Re-Visioning Indigenous Voices: The Case Of The Language, Edward Shizha

Edward Shizha

The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of teaching science to rural primary school students using a second language (English) in Zimbabwe. The study also investigated the opinions and attitudes of primary school teachers toward teaching science using an indigenous language (chiShona). Qualitative data was collected using twenty classroom observations and interviews with ten purposely selected primary school teachers. Data were analysed using a thematic analysis. The findings revealed institutional and attitudinal barriers to using chiShona as a language of instruction in science teaching and learning. The results also showed that some teachers frustrate and silence students’ …

Chicanos/as are one of the most underrepresented groups in higher education and least likely to complete a baccalaureate degree. Most Chicana/as in California begin and end their postsecondary educational journey at a community college. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to understand the role classroom faculty institutional agents play in the successful transfer of Chicano/a students. Eight Chicano/a students who transferred and graduated from a university were interviewed and they nominated classroom faculty members viewed as instrumental in their transfer success. Five classroom faculty members identified by the students were interviewed. Findings suggest that faculty institutional agents engage …

Inquiry Methods For Critical Consciousness And Self-Change, Edlyn V. Peña

Edlyn V. Peña

This study investigates faculty members' experiences in a 20-month inquiry project that provided them with structured opportunities to (a) interview students of color about their educational journey, and (b) meet with other faculty members as a collaborative inquiry team to discuss student interview findings. Changes in faculty members were documented through faculty interviews, observations of inquiry meetings, and faculty's reflective journal entries. Findings revealed that faculty members developed an intimate knowledge of students' experiences coupled with an understanding of the broader social implications of being a student of color. They developed a critical consciousness and practical knowledge that informed more …

The Forgotten Leaders, Derek J. Ambrose Dr Jan 2012

The Forgotten Leaders, Derek J. Ambrose Dr

Derek J Ambrose Dr

The definition of leadership has been diverse and is yet to be defined or too agreed upon. The concept of whom and what a leader actually is, also remains just as elusive as ever. Many authors have tried to describe the ultimate leader, through a range of characteristic actions and behaviours, however, not one complete description has been universally accepted to date.

Educational Change, The Agency Of The Educator And Heterogeneous Assemblages, Dirk Postma Jan 2012

Educational Change, The Agency Of The Educator And Heterogeneous Assemblages, Dirk Postma

Dirk Postma

The article queries the possibility and nature of human agency in educational change by developing a position between the modernistic centred agent and the postmodern disappearance of the agent and by locating agency in heterogeneous assemblages. It investigates how the educator could fulfil his/her agential role to ensure worthwhile educational outcomes. It draws on theories of sociomateriality in its symmetrical investigation of human and nonhuman agency and the heterogeneity of practices. Since reality is continually being performed (and not just reproduced) through heterogeneous practices, educators have to be able to evaluate actual and emergent outcomes, imagine possible realities and contribute …

The Arabic Language: A Sociolinguistic Study, Ahlam Alfouaim

Ahlam Alfouaim

It is very true that bilingualism boosts ones’ cognitive skills and increases ones’ executive system. A bilingual brain has the privileges to process languages and, sometimes, code switch unconsciously. Many bilingual speakers including ESL learners focus only on understanding and analyzing the target language, leaving behind understanding and embracing their own native language. The need to make a conscious sense of how we speak our native language, how others speak it, and how it is different or similar to other language varieties, is somehow misinterpreted. In other word, understanding ones’ mother tongue is vital for the progress of acquiring a …

The Critical Language Awareness Impact On Language Variation, Ahlam Alfouaim Jan 2012

The Critical Language Awareness Impact On Language Variation, Ahlam Alfouaim

Ahlam Alfouaim

The ideology of Critical Language Awareness is an integral part of any successful language education system. This area of specialization has played an important role in the development of sociolinguistics study. CLA expands substantially over a wide range of factors including language acquisition and variety, as well as human identity factors. Before diving into critical language awareness studies and its wide practices, the definition of CLA, according to Fiarcough, includes “how language conventions and language practices are invested with power relations and ideological process which people are often unaware of” (205). That is, language is not only a mean of …

Hong Kong Sponsors Should Have Little To Fear From Proposed Sfc Rules, Bryane Michael Jan 2012

Hong Kong Sponsors Should Have Little To Fear From Proposed Sfc Rules, Bryane Michael

Bryane Michael (bryane.michael@stcatz.ox.ac.uk)

New rules threaten to increase the legal liability of IPO sponsors in Hong Kong. What effect will the new rules have the IPO market in Hong Kong --- and the sponsors who prepare the new issue? We argue that the new rules -- rather than hindering the IPO market -- promise to deepen it. We review (for the lay-person) the relevant law, previoius econometric studies in the area, and provide conclusions.

The Middle Eastern Wealth Management Industry: Boon Or Bust?, Bryane Michael

Bryane Michael (bryane.michael@stcatz.ox.ac.uk)

The wealth management industry in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) represents a roughly $800 billion opportunity. Yet, tapping this opportunity will require new strategies by the wirehouses looking to penetrate into this market. In this paper, we argue that Middle-Eastern policymakers and bankers will need to develop an indigenous wealth management industry which keeps the super-wealthy’s investments at home. Developing a local national wealth management industry requires letting in foreign competition, changing banking and securities laws, and growing local companies whose share are worth buying. We show why Turkey has succeeded in growing a nationally and internationally competitive …

E-Learning Practices Revised: A Compiling Analysis On 38 Countries,, Ugur Demiray, Carlos Machodo

Ugur Demiray

In January 2010, a two-volume book (e-learning practices, Demiray et al., 2010) was produced, describing the situation and realities of information technologies in general and learning technologies in particular for 38 countries - including both “so-called” developing and developed areas within Europe and neighbouring countries. All of the countries in the book were reviewed following a fixed structured, departing from a portrayal of the country, continuing with a description of the educational system, technological infrastructure and finalising with a detailed depiction on the state-of-the-art in learning technologies and the classroom. One of the many merits of the book is not …
