How Does Inclusion With Co-Teaching Affect Student Performance On Summative Assessments?, Kaitlin M. Hutchinson Jan 2015

How Does Inclusion With Co-Teaching Affect Student Performance On Summative Assessments?, Kaitlin M. Hutchinson

Kaitlin M Hutchinson

Schools have been pushed toward inclusive practices with an emphasis on co-teaching models (Yeung, 2012), yet reservations exist and little is known about the effects of inclusive practices. The questions this study aims to answer are: 1. Does inclusion with an emphasis on co-teaching affect performance of newly transitioning students with disabilities on district and teacher made summative assessments?, and 2. Does inclusion with co-teaching have a carry-over effect on typically-developing students’ assessment scores? This study aims to investigate the effect of inclusive practices on student summative assessment scores. Results from the district pre-assessment were gathered for all students in …

Geometry: Drawing From The Islamic Tradition, Carol Bier Jan 2015

Geometry: Drawing From The Islamic Tradition, Carol Bier

Carol Bier

Getting students involved in careful observation and analysis and encouraging their exploration of cultural forms of expression is an excellent means of introducing mathematical ideas. Geometric patterns abound in Islamic art and architecture. Exhibiting great ingenuity over the centuries, Muslim artists and craftsmen created beautiful patterns to adorn architectural monuments and exquisite objects. The Alhambra in Spain and the Taj Mahal in India offer the most famous examples of extraordinary patterns using brick and glazed tile, or carved and inlaid marble. Other examples of patterns are made using metal, wood, and fiber. Students may gain conceptual and theoretical understanding of …

The Lion Tells His Side Of The (Counter)Story: A Black Male Educator's Autoethnographic Account, Ramon B. Goings

Ramon Goings

While many initiatives have emerged to increase the presence of Black males in schools, there is still little known about our experiences. Through the use of autoethnographic vignettes and counterstorytelling, I highlight the successes and challenges Black male educators may face during the hiring process as well as in the classroom. While this account cannot be generalized for all Black male educators, this study emphasizes the important role they play in the lives of their students. I conclude the article with an argument for the use of counterstorytelling in research as a transformative and therapeutic method for Black male educators …

Auditory Processing Learning Disability, Suicidal Ideation, And Transformational Faith, Frank S. Bailey, Russell G. Yocum

Russell Yocum

The purpose of this personal experience as a narrative investigation is to describe how an auditory processing learning disability exacerbated—and how spirituality and religiosity relieved—suicidal ideation, through the lived experiences of an individual born and raised in the United States. The study addresses: (a) how an auditory processing learning disability affected the primary participant’s view of life as a child, adolescent, and young adult, (b) how religiosity and spirituality helped to reframe that outlook after a near-fatal suicide attempt, and (c) how spirituality and religiosity serve to moderate the primary participant’s current view of life. Data were obtained from interviews, …

Countering The Narrative: A Layered Perspective On Supporting Black Males In Education, Ramon Goings, Aaron Smith, Daniel Harris, Tanashala Wilson, Demetrius Lancaster

Ramon Goings

The challenges facing Black males throughout the educational pipeline have been discussed by researchers in detail. However, missing from this research are discussions from the perspective of researchers, educators, and community members united on how to better support Black males. The purpose of this reflective piece is twofold. First, we address and contextualize the issues that Black boys and men face and have to overcome in academic and community settings from our various perspectives serving as a teacher candidate, in-service teacher, and higher education professionals. Second we provide recommendations for education stakeholders to help support Black males from our various …

Using Self-Assessment Checklists To Make English Language Learners Self-Directed, Masoud Mahmoodi-Shahrebabaki

masoud mahmoodi-shahrebabaki

Self-directed learning (SDL) has recently gathered momentum among EFL/ESL researchers. Within the SDL framework, learners are responsible to monitor and evaluate their own learning. Student selfassessment can play a crucial role in helping learners become more dedicated and motivated. This study aimed at examining the role of filling out self-assessment checklists by 115 Iranian EFL learners over three successive semesters with reference to the role of gender and level of proficiency. Three classes filled out a standard weekly self-evaluation checklist while three corresponding classes passed the same courses simultaneously without filling out any checklist. The result showed that there is …

The National Park Service (NPS) Advisory Board Education Committee was charged with identifying areas that would improve life-long learning in the NPS. In this session, we will present three components of a project looking at family learning in free-choice settings that emerged from this request. The components will include: a literature review developed for the NPS; complementary involvement of NPS personnel in reviewing literature and their voices; and a look at novices and experts in interpretation and research and their roles in crowd-sourced research. The presentations will be followed by round-table discussions, where participants will explore the ideas further.

Putting Resources Into Practice: A Nexus Analysis Of Knowledge Mobilisation Activities In Language Research And Multilingual Communities, Sarah Compton

Sarah Compton

Recent demand within the academy for language research that bridges different stakeholders renders the social relevance of research a factor in the academic competition for research funds [Curry, M. J., & Lillis, T. (2013). Introduction to the thematic issue: Participating in academic publishing – consequences of linguistic policies and practices. Language Policy, 12, 209–213]. This calls for new means and innovations for designing and carrying out knowledge mobilisation activities, with consequences concerning where, how and with whom this type of undertaking can or should be done. In this paper we, a team of (multilingual) researchers working within the fields of …
