Usability Testing To Improve A Teaching Website For Graduate Counselor Education Students, Paula S. Mcmillen, Dale-Elizabeth Pehrsson, Grace Lin

Paula S. McMillen

Technology proficiency expectations have proliferated in counselor education. Yet, limited information in the counseling literature details how to effectively evaluate or refine online resources from a design/utility standpoint. This description of a small-scale usability study demonstrates a cost-effective strategy for improving counselor education Web sites. Counselor education students completed specific tasks related to the target Web site’s purpose and functionality. Error and completion rates were tracked. Process comments were recorded. Combined qualitative and quantitative results clearly indicated what worked and what did not, allowing the Web site designers to prioritize needed changes in content organization, format/graphics, and workflow.

Factors Influencing The Nurse Faculty Shortage: A Case Study, Therese M. Mendez

Therese M Mendez

The nursing workforce is aging along with the rest of the American population. In 2012, RNs in their 50's will be the largest age group in the nursing workforce. Who will replace them?

New nurses come from nursing schools. Nursing schools have a steady number of applicants. However, thousands of qualified nursing school applicants are turned away. One reason for denying admission is an inadequate number of nursing faculty to support the number of qualified nursing school applicants.

This case study focuses on some of the issues faced by new faculty in a large university setting in the the Southern …

Fred A Bonner II

This study explored the perceptions of African American high school males regarding their experiences in academically rigorous programs. A specific investigation as to how this cohort defined giftedness or academic success is underscored along with their perceptions of factors they identified as hindrances to their academic success subsequent to their graduation from high school. The study also focuses on the implications for this cohort participating in gifted programming, given the intensity of these academic engagements. In many instances, spirituality and religiosity are two enduring and salient aspects of African American culture that have in many ways influenced identity development; these …

Diversifying Science: Underrepresented Student Experiences In Structured Research Programs, Sylvia Hurtado, Nolan L. Cabrera, Monica H. Lin, Lucy Arellano, Lorelle L. Espinosa

Nolan L. Cabrera

Targeting four institutions with structured science research programs for undergraduates, this study focuses on how underrepresented students experience science. Several key themes emerged from focus group discussions: learning to become research scientists, experiences with the culture of science, and views on racial and social stigma. Participants spoke of essential factors for becoming a scientist, but their experiences also raised complex issues about the role of race and social stigma in scientific training. Students experienced the collaborative and empowering culture of science, exhibited strong science identities and high self-efficacy, while developing directed career goals as a result of ‘‘doing science’’ in …

Migración De Personal Altamente Calificado De México A Estados Unidos: Una Exploración Del Fenómeno, Roberto Rodríguez-Gómez

Roberto Rodríguez-Gómez

This essay proposes to explore the features of the migration phenomenon of highlyqualified personnel from Mexico to the United States. To this end it analyzes, principally, two sources of information: first, data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s ongoing survey of households, the American Community Survey. This data identifies the features of the sociodemographic and educational profile of Mexicans residing in the United States of America, and compares it with the data for the native population and for the subset of foreign, non-Mexican residents in that country. Work with survey microdata makes it possible to provide accurate figures for population volume …

Development Of Scale For Assessing Students’ Entrepreneurship Readiness In Tertiary Insitutions: Initial Psychometric Evaluation, Prof Ada Sam Omenyi, Ngozi Agu, Christy Odimegwu

Prof Ada Sam Omenyi

Entrepreneurship education in Nigeria is perceived as a means of developing youth employment and poverty alleviation. The readiness of students to become entrepreneurs would be greatly influenced by adequacy and accuracy of the assessment of students’ entrepreneurship preparation. While many authors have acknowledged that entrepreneurship competencies cannot be effectively assessed by written examination, little has been done to develop a scale capable of doing this job. This work therefore described the development and initial evaluation of the psychometric properties of Students’ Entrepreneurship Readiness (SERS) using a sample of 450 undergraduates. The scale was found to possess sufficient reliability as shown …

Korean American Cultural Differences In Classroom Literacy Activities: Observations From An Ethnographic Case Study., Heriberto Godina Phd, Jeonghee Choi Phd Jan 2009

Korean American Cultural Differences In Classroom Literacy Activities: Observations From An Ethnographic Case Study., Heriberto Godina Phd, Jeonghee Choi Phd

Heriberto Godina PhD

This study explores teacher-student perceptions about cultural differences and their influence upon classroom literacy activities. An ethnographic case method focuses on a Korean American student. Secondary participants include a parent, teacher, and classmates in a white Midwestern community. The study accentuates the generalizable discourse that neglects the complexity inherent to intercultural relationships in a changing elementary classroom. Implications include how multicultural children’s literature deemed appropriate for minorities can be problematically situated for effective instruction.

Service-Learning Is... How Faculty Explain Their Practice, Kerryann O'Meara, Elizabeth Niehaus Jan 2009

Service-Learning Is... How Faculty Explain Their Practice, Kerryann O'Meara, Elizabeth Niehaus

KerryAnn O'Meara

Many researchers have explored faculty engagement in service-learning. However, scholarship rarely considers ways in which the discourses used by faculty to describe service-learning — the stories they tell about what it is they are doing and why — construct images of subject positions, problems, and solutions that inform our beliefs about service-learning and our practice. The purpose of this study was to understand the dominant discourses used by faculty to explain service-learning. The nomination files of 109 exemplary faculty nominated for the Thomas Ehrlich Award were analyzed. Findings indicate that faculty use four dominant discourses regarding the purposes and significance …

The Intersection Of Judicial Attitudes And Litigant Selection Theories: Explaining U.S. Supreme Court Decision Making, Jeff L. Yates, Elizabeth Coggins Jan 2009

The Intersection Of Judicial Attitudes And Litigant Selection Theories: Explaining U.S. Supreme Court Decision Making, Jeff L. Yates, Elizabeth Coggins

Jeff L Yates

Two prominent theories of legal decision making provide seemingly contradictory explanations for judicial outcomes. In political science, the Attitudinal Model suggests that judicial outcomes are driven by judges' sincere policy preferences -- judges bring their ideological inclinations to the decision making process and their case outcome choices largely reflect these policy preferences. In contrast, in the law and economics literature, Priest and Klein's well-known Selection Hypothesis posits that court outcomes are largely driven by the litigants' strategic choices in the selection of cases for formal dispute or adjudication -- forward thinking litigants settle cases where potential judicial outcomes are readily …

Chemistry And Metallurgy In The Great Empires, Fathi Habashi

Fathi Habashi

It is remarkable that certain countries expand to become great empires then as time goes by they gradually decline while others rise. This book attempts to briefly trace the history of chemistry and metallurgy through the different empires that became at one time great and then faded away. In 272 pages 21.5 x 28 cm, the author outlines the inter-relation of chemistry, metallurgy, mining, and medicine, the idea of the divinity of kings and the formation of nations, and finally the rise and fall of the empires. He then covers the ancient and medieval empires, followed by the empires from …

Science, Technology, And Society, Fathi Habashi Jan 2009

Science, Technology, And Society, Fathi Habashi

Fathi Habashi

Science, technology, and society is a vast and complex question. It is discussed here from five points: social responsibility of scientists, migration and movement of scholars, philanthropy and its role in education and culture, enlightened despots and their influence on science and culture, and finally the social aspects of mining. The book is meant for the general reader but can benefit scientists as well. It is fully illustrated with colored pictures. It is hoped that it will serve as an introduction to this field to the young generation and inspire them to serve society.
