Scenario-Based Learning: Transforming Tertiary Teaching And Learning, Reesa Sorin

This paper documents the evolution of an online teaching program based on authentic learning and utilising Scenario-based learning (SBL) as a teaching tool. SBL, where students are presented with situations derived from actual classroom practice, affords learners a more active role in their learning and the opportunity to develop real life skills outside the institution; in order to operate successfully in the global state. By participating in scenarios that target teaching dilemmas worldwide, students gain experience and understanding that can be transferred to various international educational contexts.

This paper will introduce and evaluate a teaching resource package developed by Animal Management in Rural and Remote Indigenous Communities (AMRRIC) entitled ‘Be a Friend to your Dog’ (BAFTYD). Indigenous communities in the Northern Territory (NT) of Australia have stated the need for raising the level of awareness, empathy and responsibility towards community animals. Hence, the BAFTYD program has been delivered to children in the school environment and to community members in remote Indigenous communities in the NT to promote and maintain positive attitudes and behaviour towards animals, and to help people stay safe around dogs. Although parent involvement has received long-standing attention in the literature, there is limited research about Chinese parent involvement, especially, in mainland, China. With Chinese immigrant students’ high academic success having been repeatedly reported, more attention has been given to Chinese parent involvement, however it was restricted to Chinese overseas, or in Taiwan and Hong Kong. It is unclear whether findings obtained accurately described Chinese parent involvement, and can be generalized to Chinese in Mainland. Research conducted by New, Wilson and Netting (1986) identified that pets are an integral component of the social support network for many individuals with 95% of those surveyed saying that they talk to their pet, 82% identifying that their pet assists them when they are feeling sad and 65% stating that touching their pet makes them feel better. The Canadian-based Early Development Index (EDI) defines school readiness within five developmental domains: physical health and wellbeing: social competence; emotional maturity; language and cognitive skills and communication skills and general knowledge. Based on other early development indices and trials within Canada, the EDI uses over one hundred indicators to determine 'whether a child is "performing well", average or "developmentally vulnerable."
