The Rise Of Higher Education And The Chinese Middle Class, Seow Shi Loh Oct 2015

The Rise Of Higher Education And The Chinese Middle Class, Seow Shi Loh

Seow Shi Loh

The presence of the urban middle-class, driven by the need to equip themselves with relevant qualifications and skills, has encouraged enrollment rates to sky-high which the Minister of Education announces to increase additional ten percent during the course of the next decade. (Lin & Sun, 2010) However, the consequences of such unparalleled increase become entangled with China’s social organization that is influencing relationships between the allocation of class and education. Thus, this literature review seeks to (a) disentangle the function of education and class and China’s educational reforms, (b) draw out the destabilizing highlights of the urban middle class ...

An Investigation Of Nominalization And Lexical Density In Undergraduate Research Proposals, Thu Ha T. Nguyen, Emily C. Edwards

Bahram Kazemian

Academic writing is considered an essential skill for academic success not only for undergraduate study but also for students’ further education and professional development. This writing genre has certain characteristics often lacking in students’ research writing. This study explores two characteristics in students’ research proposals, nominalization and lexical density (LD), after the students completed courses on academic writing and Second Language Research (SLR) in their second year at a Vietnamese pedagogical university. It also investigates the effectiveness of writing training in increasing students’ performance regarding the use of given features. The findings, obtained from analyzing students’ proposals and recorded interviews ...

Success In These Schools? Visual Counternarratives Of Young Men Of Color And Urban High Schools They Attend, Shaun R. Harper, Ph.D. Jan 2015

Success In These Schools? Visual Counternarratives Of Young Men Of Color And Urban High Schools They Attend, Shaun R. Harper, Ph.D.

Shaun R. Harper, Ph.D.

The overwhelming majority of published scholarship on urban high schools in the United States focuses on problems of inadequacy, instability, underperformance, and violence. Similarly, across all schooling contexts, most of what has been written about young men of color continually reinforces deficit narratives about their educational possibility. Taken together, images of Black and Latino male students in inner-city schools often manufacture dark, hopeless visualizations of imperiled youth and educational environments. Using photographic data from a study of 325 college-bound juniors and seniors attending 40 public New York City high schools, this article counterbalances one-sided mischaracterizations of young men of color ...

How To Promote Your Article (43 Ways To Improve Papers Citations), Nader Ale Ebrahim Jun 2014

How To Promote Your Article (43 Ways To Improve Papers Citations), Nader Ale Ebrahim

Nader Ale Ebrahim

Writing an article for online distribution in a way that maximized the chances of citation hits, is different from preparing one for print journals in some small, but important, respects. To be cited, articles have to be visible in an electronic environment. Therefore, publishing a high quality paper in scientific journals will be a halfway of receiving citation in the future. The rest of the way is advertising and disseminating the publications by using the proper “Research Tools”. Familiarity with the tools allows the researcher to increase his/her h-index in the short time. This article provides a list of ...

Extending And Accelerating Global Business-Education Partnerships, Dylan Kissane, John Farrell Jan 2014

Extending And Accelerating Global Business-Education Partnerships, Dylan Kissane, John Farrell

Dylan Kissane

Senior management in contemporary graduate business education must respond are the trends that are leaving a marked impact on the traditional business models of business schools. Key stakeholders in the business education ecosystem, including the students, the corporate employers and the business schools themselves, demand more of graduate education in order that their respective careers flourish, future employees have the requisite skills and experience, and business education institutions survive. Yet as in any system, survival is but a minimum requirement; successful programs seek not only to survive but to thrive, embracing the change that these three trends place on graduate ...

Transforming Personal Leadership, Kim Washington-Watson Jan 2014

Transforming Personal Leadership, Kim Washington-Watson

Kim Washington-Watson

To debrief from your research is vitally important to gain perspective about your own transforming power, self-efficacy, and tools needed to continue to do what you came here to do. I was so immersed in my subjects, their lives, and their ideology, I forgot who I was and what I came there to do. I gained membership from my subjects, got lost in their world, needed their acceptance, and did not know how to let them go. As I reflected upon my own education, career, and where I have come from in order to go forward, truth and admission required ...

(Re)Setting The Agenda For College Men Of Color: Lessons Learned From A 15-Year Movement To Improve Black Male Student Success, Shaun R. Harper, Ph.D.

Shaun R. Harper, Ph.D.

Between 1997 and 2012, much was done on college campuses and elsewhere to improve Black male student achievement. Notwithstanding, their enrollments, academic performance, and rates of baccalaureate degree attainment remain just as troublesome now as they were 15 years ago. But why? And what can be learned as various stakeholders introduce future initiatives in response to issues affecting Black undergraduate men, as well as Asian American/Pacific Islander (AAPI), Latino, and Native American male collegians? In this chapter, I chronicle the 15-year emphasis on Black male students in U.S. higher education. I first catalogue a range of efforts enacted ...

Circular Framing: A Model For Applying Bolman And Deal's Four Frames In Student Affairs Administration, Rishi Sriram, Jesse Hines Farley Jan 2014

Circular Framing: A Model For Applying Bolman And Deal's Four Frames In Student Affairs Administration, Rishi Sriram, Jesse Hines Farley

Rishi Sriram, Ph.D.

Administrators in student affairs navigate bureaucracies, manage staff, advocate for resources, and lead with purpose (Sermersheim & Keim, 2005). Nonetheless, scholars note research concerning student affairs management and leadership remains underemphasized in the current literature (Lovell & Kosten, 2000; Carpenter & Stimpson, 2007). Few models in student affairs exist to help translate theory to practice. Bolman and Deal’s (2013) four frames encourage leaders to view organizations through structural, human resource, political, and symbolic lenses. The four frames synthesize decades of literature on organizational theory and are frequently cited in higher education and student affairs publications. Previous scholarship, however, does not provide a model for applying the frames in student affairs administration. This paper proposes the Circular Framing Model-a model for administrative practice combining ...

The Development, Validity, And Reliability Of A Psychometric Instrument Measuring Competencies In Student Affairs, Rishi Sriram Jan 2014

The Development, Validity, And Reliability Of A Psychometric Instrument Measuring Competencies In Student Affairs, Rishi Sriram

Rishi Sriram, Ph.D.

The study of competencies in student affairs began more than 4 decades ago, but no instrument currently exists to measure competencies broadly. This study builds upon previous research by developing an instrument to measure student affairs competencies. Results not only validate the competencies espoused by NASPA and ACPA, but also suggest adding a new competency and dividing some existing competencies into separate ones. Competency strengths, competency weaknesses, and implications for current practice and future research are discussed.

The growing challenges and transformations of the systems and institutions of higher education have emphasized the great significance of its governance. Particularly, we recognize that universities have experienced modifications in recent times that have generated important effects on its stages and decision-making processes. These effects have enhanced the academic and practical interest in this strategic point of view on the contemporary university. In this text, we deal with the general topic of university governance as a subject of study. We examine some approaches that have addressed this issue since the decade of 1970s, especially in the United States and Europe.

De Taaltest Voor Professoren : Strijdig Met Dertig Jaar Beleid Zonder, Tergend, Overbodig En Flamingant, Serge Gutwirth

Serge Gutwirth

Interdisciplinary Doctoral Supervision: A Scoping Review, Meredith Vanstone, Kathryn Hibbert, Elizabeth Anne Kinsella, Pamela Mckenzie, Allan Pitman, Lorelei Lingard

Meredith Vanstone

This scoping literature review examines the topic of interdisciplinary doctoral research supervision. Interdisciplinary doctoral research programs are expanding in response to encouragement from funding agencies and enthusiasm from faculty and students. In an acknowledgement that the search for creative and innovative solutions to complex problems is best addressed through interdisciplinary collaborations, research-intensive universities are increasingly encouraging interdisciplinary projects and programs. The expansion of interdisciplinary research to the context of doctoral research may impact several core components of the doctorate: the enactment of the student–supervisor relationship, the process of forming and working with a supervisory committee, and the process and ...

The Verdict And Response, Edward Earl Bell Jul 2013

The Verdict And Response, Edward Earl Bell

Edward Earl Bell

The murdering of black boys is not foreign. Prior to Zimmerman, black boys were murdered in streets from coast to coast. “We” were somewhat silent calling for a global ending of these deaths. The Zimmerman verdict seems to have produced clamor not only in the black community but also in communities across the globe.
