Substance-Using Hispanic Youth And Their Families: Review Of Engagement And Treatment Strategies, Edward Cannon, Marielle Levy Oct 2015

Substance-Using Hispanic Youth And Their Families: Review Of Engagement And Treatment Strategies, Edward Cannon, Marielle Levy

Edward Cannon

A growing population of Hispanic immigrants to the United States means that helping professionals need to gain knowledge about specific issues affecting these groups. Stresses related to the immigration experience and minority status can influence the use of alcohol and illegal substances by Hispanic adolescents. Because the family is considered the preferred unit of treatment for this population, studies addressing approaches to engagement and treatment are reviewed, and two promising models are highlighted: the strategic structural systems engagement approach and the brief strategic family therapy model.

Creative Approaches To Serving Lgbtq Youth In Schools, Dennis Frank, Edward Cannon Oct 2015

Creative Approaches To Serving Lgbtq Youth In Schools, Dennis Frank, Edward Cannon

Edward Cannon

The psychological, social, and emotional needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning youth often go unmet in schools. These students may be "out and proud" or they may be silent and invisible; either way, providing effective services to them creates unique challenges for professional school counselors. Providing direct services in schools may be difficult; therefore, indirect methods may create a more hospitable environment for LGBTQ youth. It is the purpose of this article to offer a better understanding of the complexities that sexual minority youth deal with in schools and to offer school counselors and others working in the …

Queer Theory As Pedagogy In Counselor Education: A Framework For Diversity Training, Dennis Frank, Edward Cannon Oct 2015

Queer Theory As Pedagogy In Counselor Education: A Framework For Diversity Training, Dennis Frank, Edward Cannon

Edward Cannon

There is an ongoing and pernicious debate within the field of counselor education surrounding the question of whether lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender issues should be included under the umbrella of multiculturalism. Some argue that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender concerns do not fit within the traditional framework of multicultural counseling, while others assert that they do. A consequence of this debate is that many graduate-level counselors are earning degrees without having sufficient levels of self-awareness and knowledge regarding lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities. The authors propose queer theory as a unifying framework for diversity training within counselor education …

Developing A Reflective Practice Of Professional Development, Connie Fulmer

Connie L. Fulmer

An alternative approach to the traditional methods of professional growth is the development of a "reflective practice." The learning process in reflective practice begins with the examination of an individual's own actions and contrasting the actions to the ideal or intent of the practice. The process results in behavioral changes that improve professional performance.

Unpacking The Evidence Of Gender Bias, Connie Fulmer Oct 2015

Unpacking The Evidence Of Gender Bias, Connie Fulmer

Connie L. Fulmer

The purpose of this study was to investigate gender bias in pre-service principals using the Gender-Leader Implicit Association Test. Analyses of student-learning narratives revealed how students made sense of gender bias (biased or not-biased) and how each reacted to evidence (surprised or not-surprised). Two implications were: (1) the need for leadership programs to help students identify and unpack gender bias, and (2) to provide new leaders with strategies to confront and reduce gender bias in the organizations in which they will lead. A model for identifying, confronting, and reducing gender bias is presented as scaffolding to help educational leadership faculty …

School Culture For Students With Significant Support Needs: Belonging Is Not Enough, Diane Carroll, Connie Fulmer, Donna Sobel, Dorothy Garrison-Wade, Lorenso Aragon, Lisa Coval Oct 2015

School Culture For Students With Significant Support Needs: Belonging Is Not Enough, Diane Carroll, Connie Fulmer, Donna Sobel, Dorothy Garrison-Wade, Lorenso Aragon, Lisa Coval

Connie L. Fulmer

This qualitative study examined the influence of school culture on services for students with significant support needs. Students with significant support needs are defined as those who typically have cognitive impairments, often paired with sensory and physical challenges, and who require substantial supports to receive benefit from education. Using Schein's (1988) definition of culture, ethnographic methods, including observations, interviews and artifacts, were used to collect data related to artifacts, values, and assumptions. Results of this study indicate a strong sense of family, community and belonging. However, belonging did not include critical components of instruction as described as best practice in …
