Embedding Evidence-Based Practice In A Nursing Curriculum: A Benchmarking Project, Wendy Chaboyer, Ania Willman, Patricia Johnson, Lynette Stockhausen

Patricia Johnson

The development of a new nursing curriculum in one Australian university provided the opportunity for academic staff to consider the best ways to integrate the requirements of evidence-based practice (EBP) into nursing education and culminated in the development and conduct of a specific benchmarking project. Data collection for the project included the use of university documents, observations and informal discussions with staff. An analysis of this information resulted in the emergence of five categories that were grouped into two major categories, namely infrastructure and processes. Within the major category of infrastructure, two minor categories, namely evidence-based nursing (EBN) Unit and …

Signposts To Improved Test Scores In Literacy And Numeracy., Sheldon Rothman, J Mcmillan

Dr Sheldon Rothman

A recent study of year 9 students' results on reading comprehension and mathematics tests, by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) found that a positive school climate is associated with higher literacy and numeracy test scores. In other key findings, socioeconomic status, language background, Indigenous status, gender and educational aspirations were found to have significant effects on achievement in both literacy and numeracy. Parents' education had a significant effect on literacy but not on numeracy. This article gives an overview of the findings.

Ako Ako: A Progress Report On A Collaborative Peer Mentoring Pilot Programme, Chrissy Joyce-Erueti, Rhona Poutu-Shaw, Khurshid Mitchell Jul 2004

Ako Ako: A Progress Report On A Collaborative Peer Mentoring Pilot Programme, Chrissy Joyce-Erueti, Rhona Poutu-Shaw, Khurshid Mitchell

Chrissy Erueti

We present a progress report on a pilot peer-mentoring programme for staff at a tertiary institution. Ako Ako is a Maori methodology of learning that acknowledges that both partners share the power base of teaching and learning. Peer mentoring replicates this methodology and requires a paradigm shift from traditional mentoring where one is deemed to have higher levels of knowledge and skills. In this process the group engages in an exchange of knowledge and skills to enhance professional practice. Although mentoring was occurring within the institute, no formal structure was in place. A need was established and a framework to …

Mathematics Teachers’ Knowledge Base: Preliminary Results, Guershon Harel, Kien Lim

Kien H Lim

Student learning depends on the teacher’s actions, which are, in turn, dependent on the teacher’s knowledge base—defined here by three components: knowledge of mathematics content, knowledge of student epistemology, and knowledge of pedagogy. The purpose of this study is to construct models for teachers’ knowledge base and for their development in an on-site professional development project.

Primary School Teachers' Knowledge, Attitudes And Behaviours Toward Children With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Julie Kos Jun 2004

Primary School Teachers' Knowledge, Attitudes And Behaviours Toward Children With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Julie Kos

Dr Julie Kos

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common childhood disorder affecting approximately five percent of primary school-aged children. The disorder is characterised by severe difficulties in one or more of three areas; inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. There are a variety of assessments used to help diagnose ADHD; interviews, behaviour checklists, medical assessments, and ancillary tests. Furthermore, there are numerous treatment options available, including psychological, biological, and alternative treatments. Whilst the aetiology of ADHD is unclear, there have been a number of possible causes put forth, including psychological, biological, and environmental suggestions. Considering that primary school teachers are often the first to notice …

Does Open Source Software Have A Place In School Jurisdictions’ It Portfolios? Researching Open Source Software Applicable For Use In Australian Schools, Kathryn Moyle Jun 2004

Does Open Source Software Have A Place In School Jurisdictions’ It Portfolios? Researching Open Source Software Applicable For Use In Australian Schools, Kathryn Moyle

Professor Kathryn Moyle (consultant)

The question of whether open source software has a place in school jurisdictions’ IT portfolios, is an urgent one nationally. Schools and school jurisdictions are concerned about the recurrent costs of proprietary software licences. Using data drawn from a national research project conducted by the South Australian Department of Education in 2004 about the potential use of open source software in schools, this paper outlines some of the research undertaken that specifically addressed two of the research questions:
  • What are the models and their underlying assumptions for identifying total cost of ownership for using open source software operating systems and …

Academic Freedom And The Research University, Richard Atkinson May 2004

Academic Freedom And The Research University, Richard Atkinson

Richard Atkinson

The article argues that the principles upon which academic freedom is founded must be elaborated and modified in ways that are relevant to the responsibilities and circumstances of today's universities. The article elucidates the UC's new statement on academic freedom, which honors the long history and tradition of the principles of academic freedom, but also breaks new ground in that it explicitly recognizes the means of maintaining those freedoms. The new policy affirms the principle that faculty conduct will be assessed in reference to academic values and professional norms, an inherently broad and flexible standard that is properly left to …

Why You Have To Probe To Discover What Year 8 Students Really Think About Fractions, Catherine Pearn, Max Stephens May 2004

Why You Have To Probe To Discover What Year 8 Students Really Think About Fractions, Catherine Pearn, Max Stephens

Catherine Pearn

Many researchers have noted how children's whole number schemes can interfere with their efforts to learn fractions. This paper examines the persistence of whole number schemes among 14 year-old students who appear to have successfully mastered routine algorithms for working with fractions. Uncovering whole number thinking among such students is therefore difficult, and is illustrated through the use of several probing interview tasks, revealing quite different forms of whole number thinking. These forms of thinking can give correct answers also making it difficult for teachers to identify incorrect thinking about fractions. Representations of fractions using number lines can assist in …

Technology Competency: Educating The Educators Of Tomorrow, Christine Knox-Gramlick, Melissa Koenig May 2004

Technology Competency: Educating The Educators Of Tomorrow, Christine Knox-Gramlick, Melissa Koenig

Melissa Koenig

As the use of technology grows, the effect it has on education also grows. The teachers of tomorrow must not only be able to use the technology of today but must also be able to teach that technology to their students. Educators must be able to prepare their students to use technology for both educational advancement and career opportunities. This paper looks at the development of an online course designed to ensure that all Education majors leave with the knowledge needed to teach the students of tomorrow.

Parent And Sibling Perspectives On The Transition To Adulthood, Cynthia R. Chambers, Carolyn Hughes, Erik W. Carter May 2004

Parent And Sibling Perspectives On The Transition To Adulthood, Cynthia R. Chambers, Carolyn Hughes, Erik W. Carter

Cynthia R. Chambers

The purpose of this investigation was to extend research on parent and sibling perspectives concerning the transition of family members with significant cognitive disabilities to adult life. Eight parents and eight siblings of high school students with significant cognitive disabilities completed questionnaires addressing transition outcomes. Results indicate that parents and siblings believe that they lacked knowledge with respect to post-school options, and parents report assuming more active roles in the transition process than did siblings. Although future employment and independent living were important to respondents, both parents and siblings anticipated that after high school, their family member with a disability …

Obituary Thakor Shah By Amar Jesani & Vibhuti Patel, Professor Vibhuti Patel

Professor Vibhuti Patel

At a time when the nation needs people who could keep alive the secular conscience of Gujarat, the passing away of Thakor Shah on April 10, 2004 in Vadodara due to massive heart attack has come as a big jolt. He died while participating in the meeting of the network of social movements in Gujarat. Of the 76 years he lived, he spent over 60 years in public life, making personal sacrifices, fearlessly withstanding all attacks – physical and political – in his incessant struggle for organising working masses for their rights and justice. His life was a political journey …

Fayette Schools Need Effective, Inspiring Leader, Richard E. Day May 2004

Fayette Schools Need Effective, Inspiring Leader, Richard E. Day

Richard E. Day

There is a leadership crisis in our school district that needs to be fixed quickly. As the school board considers superintendent candidates, it is appropriate to discuss whether the next superintendent should be from inside the district or outside, and what qualities are crucial. Given recent history, I can think of nothing more important than finding a qualified person who knows the district, shares the board's vision and has a demonstrated commitment to Fayette County and its children. We need a steady hand on the wheel.

Psychologist Hand-Scoring Error Rates On The Rothwell - Miller Interest Blank : A Comparison Of Three Job Allocation Systems, R Goddard, Robert Simons, W Patton, K Sullivan

Dr Robert Simons

Hand-scoring errors are known to occur on a range of psychological tests. The present study conducts an investigation into the existence of scoring errors by 27 professional occupational psychologists using the Rothwell - Miller Interest Blank (RMIB). Building on investigations into the impact of work allocation practices on work quality in other professions, the present study explored whether psychologist scoring error rates differed between three work allocation systems. Data from 1175 completed RMIB survey forms indicated that error rates for the three systems ranged from 5 to 16.3 per cent, with the self-managed work allocation system resulting in the lowest …
