Voltammetric Studies Of Mn@C82, Mark Anderson, Harry Dorn, Paul Burbank, James Gibson
Mark R. Anderson
The voltammetry for a series of related endohedral metallofullerenes is reported. It is found that as additional metal atoms are inserted into the fullerene cage, the first reduction of the metallofullerenes shifts to more negative potentials. This is consistent with more charge being transferred to the fullerene cage from the additional metal atom; however, the magnitude of the shift is much smaller than expected.
Rasch Models Of Multidimensionality Between Items And Within Items, W Wen-Chung, M Wilson, Ray Adams
Rasch Models Of Multidimensionality Between Items And Within Items, W Wen-Chung, M Wilson, Ray Adams
Prof Ray Adams
This chapter focuses on Rasch measurement and extends it to multidimensional Rasch models. The author first clarifies multidimensionality at two levels: the item level and the test level. With this two way classification, three kinds of tests are formed: undimensional tests, multidimensional between-item tests, and multidimensional within-item tests. The author describes a multidimensional Rasch model, the multidimensional random coefficients multinomial logit (MRCML) model, for multidimensional tests. The model, when applied to multidimensional between-item tests, is more efficient than are unidimensional models in terms of model fit and reliability indices. The model can also be applied to investigate scale interaction of …
Australia As A Literate Nation: From Australia's Language To The National Literacy And Numeracy Plan, Perspectives On National Literacy Initiatives In The 1990s, Marion Meiers
Marion Meiers
The author provides a sensitive and detailed analysis of policy initiatives stretching from Australia's Language to the National Literacy and Numeracy Plan. Given the richness of research and curriculum development over the past decade, the author argues that we are entitled to feel reasonably optimistic about Australia's future as a literate nation.

Lifelong Learning And Employability, Phil Mckenzie, Gregory Wurzburg
Lifelong Learning And Employability, Phil Mckenzie, Gregory Wurzburg
Dr Phillip McKenzie
'Lifelong employability' — the capacity to be productive and to hold rewarding jobs over one's working life — is no longer guaranteed by the education and training received in childhoodand youth. The continuous structural changes affecting all OECD economies have increased the importance of up-to-dateskills and competences. Responding to this requirement calls for the development of effective strategies for lifelong learning.
Multilevel Item Response Models: An Approach To Errors In Variables Regression, Ray Adams, M Wilson, Margaret Wu
Multilevel Item Response Models: An Approach To Errors In Variables Regression, Ray Adams, M Wilson, Margaret Wu
Prof Ray Adams
In this article the authors show how certain analytic problems that arise when one attempts to use latent variables as outcomes in regression analyses can be addressed by taking a multilevel perspective on item response modelling.
A Study Of Principals' Interpersonal Behaviour And School Environment, John Cresswell
A Study Of Principals' Interpersonal Behaviour And School Environment, John Cresswell
Dr John Cresswell
This thesis describes a research study that investigated associations between teachers' perceptions of principals' interpersonal behaviour and psychosocial environments of secondary schools in Australia. In the past 25 years, much attention has been given to the development and use of instruments to assess the qualities of the classroom and school environment from the perspectives of students and teachers. A new instrument (the Principal Interaction Questionnaire) was developed and validated to measure principals' interpersonal behaviour as perceived by their teachers. The instrument was developed from the Questionnaire on Teacher Interaction. The teachers' perceptions of the school environments are assessed by the …
Haitian Education Under Siege: Democratization, National Development, And Social Reconstruction, Marc Prou
Haitian Education Under Siege: Democratization, National Development, And Social Reconstruction, Marc Prou
Marc E. Prou
From a national development perspective, the Haitian educational system presents an alarming picture. It is one in which too much is expected of too little, and in which results are sacrificed to bureacratic convenience. The facts are simple and irrefutable. Only a massive investment in human capital formation will bring economic and social progress in Haiti. Yet economic growth and industrial expansion rely on education as a key factor for human capital formation. The major dichotomy between the two is that education can influence national development only to the extent that individuals are able to put the interests of the nation …

Ngf And Neurotrophin-3 Both Activate Trka On Sympathetic Neurons But Differentially Regulate Survival And Neuritogenesis, Daniel Belliveau, I. Krivko, C. Lachance, J. Kohn, D. Rusakov, D. Kaplan, F. Miller
Daniel J. Belliveau
In this report we examine the biological and molecular basis of the control of sympathetic neuron differentiation and survival by NGF and neurotrophin-3 (NT-3). NT-3 is as efficient as NGF in mediating neuritogenesis and expression of growth-associated genes in NGF-dependent sympathetic neurons, but it is 20-40-fold less efficient in supporting their survival. Both NT-3 and NGF induce similar sustained, long-term activation of TrkA, while NGF is 10-fold more efficient than NT-3 in mediating acute, short-term TrkA activity. At similar acute levels of TrkA activation, NT-3 still mediates neuronal survival two- to threefold less well than NGF. However, a mutant NT-3 …

Bias In Weighted Likelihood Estimation When Using The Rasch Model, D Roberts, Ray Adams
Bias In Weighted Likelihood Estimation When Using The Rasch Model, D Roberts, Ray Adams
Prof Ray Adams
There are three methods of maximum likelihood estimation that are commonly used with Rasch item response models: Joint maximum likelihood, which provides point estimates for both person and item parameters; conditional maximum likelihood, which produces estimates for the item parameters only, and marginal maximum likelihood, which produces estimates of the item parameters and parameters of the distribution from which it has been assumed that the persons have been sampled. A number of approaches have been suggested for obtaining ability estimates for subsequent use in reporting or analysis when either conditional or marginal methods have been used to obtain the item …
Multilevel Latent Variable Modeling In Multiple Populations, Siek Khoo, B Muthén, J Gustafsson
Multilevel Latent Variable Modeling In Multiple Populations, Siek Khoo, B Muthén, J Gustafsson
Dr Siek Toon Khoo
Modeling is described for the simultaneous analysis of two-level data in several populations. A typical example is cluster sampling of students within schools, where schools of different types are represented, eg public and private schools. Multivariate measurements on each student are assumed to give rise to a latent variable model. Of interest is to study across-population differences and similarities with respect to the within- and between-group covariance matrices and with respect to the mean vector. The methodology is illustrated by a comparative analysis of achievement structures in Catholic and public schools.

October: An Education Journal, Rowan Cahill
Rowan Cahill
This 8-page pamphlet/zine is written in the form of a diary for the month of October, 1997, and was published by Bull Ant Press, Bowral (1997). In it the author comments widely on contemporary education issues, in particular the modern trend towards the corporatisation of education, a process he sees as devaluing independent and critical thought in favour of wall-to-wall assessments and examining, utility, bureaucratisation, and education reflecting "corporate and market place ideologies and practices".
