The Middle Landscape Of The Private College: A Bicentennial Perspective, George W. Geib
The Middle Landscape Of The Private College: A Bicentennial Perspective, George W. Geib
George W. Geib
America's Private Colleges and Universities have entered the bicentennial year expressing deep concern for their individual and collective futures. They seem constantly engaged in a search for new students and additional financial contributors; they darkly aver that they may be forced to close forever if their search fails; and they point to the dozens of others campuses that passed from the scene in the last decade as proof of the urgency of their case. To some observers these forebodings of doom may appear, like the associated press reports about Mark Twain's demise, greatly exaggerated. But the immediacy and intensity with …

It is not often in the life of an academic or of an academic institution that circumstances coalesce to bring about a new academic discipline. But it happened recently, thus a review of the circumstances may be of interest and potentially instructive. Disciplines are typically characterized as a field of study at institutions of higher learning; they have a definable body of knowledge, scholars who contribute to that body of knowledge, teachers who teach in the field, a community of people who identify with the field, a refereed journal, are often associated with a professional practice and, in many cases, …

Global Trends In Higher Education Policies, Kathryn Moyle
Global Trends In Higher Education Policies, Kathryn Moyle
Professor Kathryn Moyle (consultant)
This paper outlines the current global context for higher education in 2015, as a basis for examining the key trends in teacher education in the first decades of the 21st century. The purpose of this paper is to outline the current global contexts for higher education, and to provide an overview of the policies found in teacher education in those countries that consistently produce students who perform highly on international standardized tests such as PISA, TIMSS and PIRLS. The policies guiding teacher education in ‘high-performing’ countries tends to be aligned and inter-connected. These policies include public investment in education; creating …

Understanding subconscious biases, their pervasiveness, and their impact on perceptions, interactions, and analyses, helps prepare lawyers to represent people from cultural and racial backgrounds different from their own, and to address both individual and institutional injustice. Two law student surveys suggest many students believe lawyers are less susceptible than clients to having, or acting upon, stereotypes or biases. The survey results also indicate that many students suffer from bias blind spot – i.e. they believe that while others cannot recognize when they are acting based upon stereotypical beliefs and biases, the students know when they are doing so. The survey …

Derivation Of The Volume Of Tetrahedron/Pyramid Bounded By A Given Plane & The Co-Ordinate Planes, Harish Chandra Rajpoot Rajpoot Hcr
Harish Chandra Rajpoot H.C. Rajpoot
The article here deals with the derivation of a general expression to calculate the volume of tetrahedron/pyramid bounded by a given plane & the co-rdinate planes (i.e. XY-plane, YZ-plane & ZX-plane) using intercept form of equation of a plane in 3-D space. All the derivations are based on simple geometry. These are very useful to directly calculate the volume of the bounded tetrahedron/pyramid.

The number of citations a paper receives helps to determine the impact of your research. Even if your research is excellent, if no one finds your paper, it won’t be cited. Similar to a company for marketing a retail product, Academic Search Engine Optimization (ASEO) of your journal papers is important to market your research findings. ASEO is almost obligatory if you would like to increase readership of your papers, increase citations and acknowledgment and to create an overall stronger academic visibility, both offline and online. By optimizing your articles, you guarantee that your articles are indexed and gain a …
A Study Of The Influence Of Public And Private Christian High School Education On Academic Achievement And Spiritual Formation Of College Students, Patty B. Leblanc Ph. D., Patty Slaughter Ph.D.
A Study Of The Influence Of Public And Private Christian High School Education On Academic Achievement And Spiritual Formation Of College Students, Patty B. Leblanc Ph. D., Patty Slaughter Ph.D.
Patty LeBlanc
This investigation compared the influence of public and Christian high schools on the spiritual formation and academic achievement of college students. Recent high school graduates who attend a private, liberal arts university in the southeastern United States responded to an online survey and interview questions related to the influence of one’s high school experience on spiritual formation and academic achievement. Significant differences were found between high school type and the type of problems faced by students and teachers, students’ ability to intelligently defend their faith, and students’ perceived ability to function in a diverse world. Significant differences favoring Christian school …

Playful Possibilities For Assessment: Fluffy Ducks And The Queen’S Gambit, Jeremiah I. Holden
Remi Kalir
Is it possible for anyone to regard assessment as “fun”? Is it possible that we have hamstrung ourselves into boredom and resistance to assessing student learning by forgetting our love of play? How might the delightful aspects of games transform our approaches to assessment? Here, SEHS Lecturer Remi Holden (winner of the inaugural Bruce and Lillian Wright Online Teaching Award) explores these questions as he describes how “playful teaching and learning” has become central to the work of the Educational Technology Master of Arts Program.

Middle Grade Teachers’ Perceptions Of Their Chemistry Teaching Efficacy: Findings Of A One Year Long Professional Development Program, Issaou Gadp, Geeta Verma, Doris Simonis
Geeta Verma
A professional development (PD) program, Conceptual Chemistry for Middle School Teachers, was designed to facilitate teachers’ learning and teaching of basic chemistry concepts. This study explored (a) whether the PD increased teachers’ self-efficacy and teaching outcome expectancy and (b) how the PD program influenced teachers’ chemistry content knowledge and attitudes toward learning chemistry concepts. Thirty-six teachers (N = 36; 26 women, 10 men) who taught grades 5-9 were selected from a population of science teachers in north eastern Ohio. A mixed method approach was used in the study and qualitative and quantitative data were collected and analyzed simultaneously. The quantitative …
Using Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning (Sotl) To Inquire Into Pre-Service Teachers’ Science Lesson Planning Considerations, Geeta Verma
Geeta Verma
This paper shares my experiences with the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) framework in my university science methods course. Incorporating SoTL not only enabled me to inquire into my own teaching as a scholarly activity but also engaged my students in critical reflections. I used the principles and characteristics of SoTL to design this inquiry by a) creating a new instructional framework for lesson planning; b) facilitating students’ reflections on their experiences with the new framework; and c) documenting and presenting this inquiry as a scholarly activity. Forty-eight pre service teachers (N = 48), 43 women and 5 men …
Virtual Worlds In Pre-Service Teacher Education : The Introduction Of Virtual Worlds In Pre-Service Teacher Education To Foster Innovative Teaching-Learning Processes, Lisa Jacka
Dr Lisa Jacka
Few pre-service teacher education programs have integrated virtual worlds despite their capacity to provide a platform upon which new forms of teaching and learning can be explored. This research identified factors that influence the level of readiness of pre-service teacher educators and students to introduce, develop and support innovative teaching-learning processes using Virtual Worlds. Over three years Second Life and Sim-on-a-Stick were introduced in a School of Education and the perceptions, experiences, motivations and barriers of the participants were documented. A model was developed to assist pre-service teacher educators in the integration of virtual worlds in higher education.

Background Obesity prevention among youth of low SES is a public health priority given the higher prevalence of youth obesity in this population subgroup. Purpose To evaluate the 24-month impact of a school-based obesity prevention program among adolescent girls living in low-income communities. Design The study was a school-based group RCT, the Nutrition and Enjoyable Activity for Teen Girls (NEAT Girls) intervention. Setting/participants The study involved 12 secondary schools located in low-income communities in New South Wales, Australia. Participants were 357 adolescent girls (aged 13.2±0.5 years). Intervention The 12-month multicomponent intervention was guided by social cognitive theory and involved strategies …
