Causation And Caution In Financial Aid Reform: A Historical Perspective Through Multiple Shades Of Gray Literature, Keiko Shimizu Broomhead
Causation And Caution In Financial Aid Reform: A Historical Perspective Through Multiple Shades Of Gray Literature, Keiko Shimizu Broomhead
Keiko S Broomhead
To better understand how a once well-intentioned concept of financial tuition assistance for college students has devolved into its current troubled and broken state, this doctoral thesis explored the evolution of the U.S. system of federal financial aid in higher education from a historical perspective. The study began with a review of the current state of the federal student aid system in U.S. higher education and then looked back at four key junctures in financial aid's history to understand influences that shaped it to be what it is today. Using a historical research approach, this doctoral thesis examined the gray …
Making Histories: Developing An Oral History Of All In Australia, Alisa Percy, Bronwyn James, Tim Beaumont, Reem Al-Mahmood
Making Histories: Developing An Oral History Of All In Australia, Alisa Percy, Bronwyn James, Tim Beaumont, Reem Al-Mahmood
Alisa Percy, PhD
How might our present understandings of our professional identities, our struggles, our achievements and our capacities for agency be better understood through the memories and accounts of those who championed our emergence? What might oral accounts of the emergence of our field offer beyond what can be gathered from its existing literature? Indeed, why look at the history of a professional field at all?
This session approaches such questions by reporting on oral accounts of the emergence and evolution of ALL in Australia. As we note some of the insights and lived experiences of those engaged in the formative years …
Does The "Negro" Still Need Separate Schools? Single-Sex Educational Spaces As Critical Race Counterspaces, La Mont Terry
Does The "Negro" Still Need Separate Schools? Single-Sex Educational Spaces As Critical Race Counterspaces, La Mont Terry
Clarence "La Mont" Terry, Sr.
This article explores whether contemporary educators should consider single-sex educational settings as viable interventions in educating African American males. Using qualitative data from a 2-year study of single-sex educational spaces in two Los Angeles County high schools, the authors argue that when all-male spaces effectively function as Critical Race Theory counterspaces, the educational experiences of high school–aged Black males are positively transformed. These co-curricular, single-sex counterspaces can effectively shield Black males from the marginalizing effects of urban schooling while serving as platforms for productive reengagement in positive school trajectories. Research-based principles for designing effective single-sex educational settings are discussed.
Knuckling Under? School Superintendents And Accountability-Based Educational Reform, Abe Feuerstein
Knuckling Under? School Superintendents And Accountability-Based Educational Reform, Abe Feuerstein
Abe Feuerstein
The goal of this article is to explore the various ways that superintendents have responded to accountability-based educational reform efforts such as No Child Left Behind, the factors that have influenced their responses, and the implications of these responses for current and future educational leaders. With respect to the first issue, empirical data from a number of nationai studies (T. E. Glass & Franceschini, 2007; Johnson, Arumi, & Ott, 2006; Johnstone, Dilkkers, & Luedeke, 2009; Stecher et al., 2008) make clear that while there have been a variety of responses from superintendents to accountability-based reform efforts, superintendents have mostly played …

Serving Those Who Serve: Outreach And Instruction For Student Cadets And Veterans, Nancy E. Fawley, Nikki Kyrsak
Nancy Fawley
Student cadets and veterans new to college have unique academic needs, and the abrupt switch from civilian to Corps life for new students at a military university can be challenging. Likewise, transitioning from military life to civilian life as a veteran student can be overwhelming. The libraries at Norwich University and The University of Alabama are supporting programs to assist new students in the transition from civilian to Corps life and from military to civilian life, respectively. While these students are at different stages of their military careers, cadets and veterans have common attributes that inform library support and instruction, …
Scientific Skateboarding And Mathematical Music: Edutainment That Actively Engages Middle School Students, William H. Robertson, Larry Lesser
Scientific Skateboarding And Mathematical Music: Edutainment That Actively Engages Middle School Students, William H. Robertson, Larry Lesser
William H. Robertson
Edutainment has recently been a major growing area of education, showing great promise to motivate students with relevant activities. The authors are among innovators who have developed cutting-edge fusions of popular culture and STEM concepts to engage and to motivate middle school students, using vehicles such as music/song and skateboarding. The importance of using relevant and practical methods of instruction and curriculum delivery that build on student interests and increase enjoyment in the learning process are critical at the middle school level, especially in the STEM fields. The use of edutainment in this manner is meant to inspire broader interest …
Quasi-Experiment Examining Cafeteria-Style Grading In Social Work Education, Brandon Youker, Lyza Ingraham
Quasi-Experiment Examining Cafeteria-Style Grading In Social Work Education, Brandon Youker, Lyza Ingraham
Brandon W. Youker Ph.D
Cafeteria-style grading system is an individualized student assessment method whereby students choose their assignments from an expansive and diverse pool of assignments. In this study, students are non-randomly assigned to two sections of the same social work course. The first section received cafeteria-style assignments and grading system (i.e., experimental group) while the comparison section received the traditional method of grading. Students in both sections video record a demonstration exercise; the recordings are reviewed and scored by experts from a panel of social work professors. Preliminary results show an effect on student attendance but no effect on GPA or student performance.

Concerned about the rising rates of obesity and increasing health care costs in Japan, the government passed a law that requires local governments and companies to measure the waistlines of Japanese residents between the ages of 40 and 74 (56 million waistlines, 44% of the population of Japan). Those exceeding the government limits (Established by the Japanese International Diabetes Foundation), 33.5 inches for men and 35.4 inches for women, will be given diet and exercise advice. If, after three months of intervention residents fail to lose weight, they will be steered toward further re-education programs. Local governments and companies who …
Academic And Professional Integrity: New Snake Oil In Old Bottles?, Gordon A. Crews
Academic And Professional Integrity: New Snake Oil In Old Bottles?, Gordon A. Crews
Gordon A Crews
This presentation was given in September of 2005 as Dr. Gordon A. Crews’ presidential address during his year as president of the Southern Criminal Justice Association. It is an overview of the issue of academic and professional integrity, or lack thereof, in higher education. The comparison of academics to “snake oil salesmen” of the past is the central focus of this presentation. The presentation also analyzes the issues of integrity and collegiality in the three traditional areas of academics’ professional lives: teaching, research, and service.
Twenty-First Century College Commentaries, Mary Ferguson
Twenty-First Century College Commentaries, Mary Ferguson
Mary J. Ferguson, Ed. D.
My parents were children of second generation post slavery parents; they valued the educational basics of math, reading and writing. When I revisited the requirements my parents demanded from us as child scholars, it reminded me of how simple things use to be in order to live an educated, simple and responsible life. ‘Go to college’ was their number one educational demand; having lived through the Great Depression, they valued God, education and our country. My siblings were the first generation of college students to obtain higher education or should I say four-year degrees in my family. School was a …

Vencer A Crise. Ética, Psicologia E Partidos, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha
Vencer A Crise. Ética, Psicologia E Partidos, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha
Bodies At Home And At School: Toward A Theory Of Embodied Social Class Status, Sue Ellen Henry
Bodies At Home And At School: Toward A Theory Of Embodied Social Class Status, Sue Ellen Henry
Sue Ellen Henry
Sociology has long recognized the centrality of the body in the reciprocal construction of individuals and society, and recent research has explored the influence of a variety of social institutions on the body. Significant research has established the influence of social class and child rearing practices and variable language forms in families and children. Less well understood is the influence of children’s social class status on their gestures, comportment, and other bodily techniques. This paper brings these two areas of study together to explore how working class children’s bodies are shaped by the child-rearing practices associated with their social class …
Anay's Will To Learn: A Woman's Education In The Shadow Of The Maquiladora, Elaine Hampton
Anay's Will To Learn: A Woman's Education In The Shadow Of The Maquiladora, Elaine Hampton
Elaine Hampton
The opening of free trade agreements in the 1980s caused major economic changes in Mexico and the United States. These economic activities spawned dramatic social changes in Mexican society. One young Mexican woman, Anay Palomeque de Carrillo, rode the tumultuous wave of these economic activities from her rural home in tropical southern Mexico to the factories in the harsh desert lands of Ciudad Juárez during the early years of the city’s notorious violence.
During her years as an education professor at the University of Texas at El Paso, author Elaine Hampton researched Mexican education in border factory (maquiladora) communities. On …

Dispositional Development As A Form Of Continuous Professional Development: Centre-Based Reflective Practices With Teachers Of (Very) Young Children, Terri Swim, Zeynep Isik-Ercan
Zeynep Isik-Ercan
The nature of professional development in early childhood education has recently been reconceptualised, with accompanying changes in policy and practice. This paper draws from teacher education literature to define the components of continuing professional development practices in the context of early childhood education practice. By relating these components to one another, the authors describe a central concept for the growth of early childhood educators: dispositional development, the process by which teachers develop professional dispositions that are intertwined with their daily practices. Analysis, reflection and documentation of teacher work within the sociocultural context of children and families they work with shape …
Activity Permissible Classrooms: The Next Revolution In Teaching & Learning, John R. Kilbourne
Activity Permissible Classrooms: The Next Revolution In Teaching & Learning, John R. Kilbourne
John R. Kilbourne
For more than twenty years I have been teaching college and university lecture/discussion courses in the typical classroom setting. The classrooms have usually consisted of thirty to forty chairs with fixed attached desks organized in neat rows, all facing front. There was little opportunity to alter the configuration because of the confined space, time, and the other classes that preceded and followed mine. In the fall of 2008 this all changed when I began to restructure my teaching space to be a more activity permissible classroom.
Language Policy And Education: Space And Place In Multilingual Post-Soviet States, Kara D. Brown
Language Policy And Education: Space And Place In Multilingual Post-Soviet States, Kara D. Brown
Kara D. Brown
Institutional isomorphists and other proponents of world culture theory argue that schools around the world are converging in many ways, while anthropologists and others question this conclusion, often arguing that local cultural differences belie superficial similarities. These viewpoints are not merely academic explanations of the spread and apparent convergence of education policies and practices around the world, but are often present in policy and practice. The authors seek both to shed new light on these often-entrenched positions and to refocus the debate by considering the presence and influence of such views in the policies and practices of international teacher exchanges. …
