Assessment Of Thinking In Adult Learners, Darlene Eleanor Crone-Todd

Darlene Crone-Todd

Higher-order thinking is one of the defining characteristics of higher education, yet the rating of such behavior has been neither reliable nor valid. Recent research involving the use of categories has yielded relatively high inter-rater reliability, with nominal categories of behavior identified. The current study applies an ordinal-scale model of hierarchical complexity (MHC) to educational tasks. The initial results suggest that the MHC can be used to score questions with varying degrees of complexity and support, and that future research should concentrate on determining the reliability and validity of this scoring system for educational purposes.

I contend that for progress towards a sustainable future, we need an understanding of sustainability as having a core of reconnective learning as an inbuilt ‘driver’. Many writers such as Sterling (2001: 19) call for the elaboration of a new, lived paradigm of sustainable education and learning sustainability. In this chapter, I use notions of primary and secondary meaning and Heron’s (1996) and Reason’s (2004) framework of experiential, presentational, propositional and practical knowledge to propose a transformative, reconnective process for learning sustainability. Course Mentoring: Toward Achieving Consistency In The Curriculum, Lucia Dettori, Amber Settle

One the main challenges in achieving consistency in the curriculum is the delivery and coordination of multi-section introductory courses. The mix of adjunct, new, and seasoned instructors, the frequent changes in course content and learning goals, and the non-homogeneous student body are some of the factors that makes successfully teaching such courses a challenge. In this paper we describe how the course mentoring project combines personal involvement with a technological solution to build an effective knowledge-sharing virtual community. Course mentoring has proven to be an efficient way to address and overcome the challenges of teaching introductory computer science courses.

The Undergraduate Teaching Assistant (UTA) Program at the University of Arizona exposes students to many different aspects of teaching an undergraduate mathematics course. The program's breadth generates various qualitative and quantitative benefits. Some of these benefits are that the UTAs improve their mathematics and communications skills, instructors have additional support both inside and outside the classroom, and mathematics students in classes with UTAs enjoy their mathematics classes more than students in similar classes without UTAs.

A fundamental task for information technology educators is to help students understand the basic ethical, social, and legal issues inherent in the discipline. We present a method for achieving this goal using in-class debates. Debates allow for a high-level of participation, demand that students conduct significant research, and provide an interactive environment. This encourages the development of communication skills and exposes students to alternative points of view. The debates were conducted in two courses that provide a survey of some aspect of e-commerce technology, one at the undergraduate level and the other at the Masters level.

The objective of this study was the research of novel and inexpensive sources of polysaccharides degrading enzymes such as amylases and glucanases from local plants in order to justify their biotechnological applications. The isolation of two l3-amylases and an endo-1,3-ß-D-glucanase was reached using common protein purification methods such as buffer extraction, ammonium sulfate fractionation, ionexchange and gel filtration chromatographies. The methods used were simple and easily reproducible, suggesting the possibilfty of large-scale production. ln the crude extract of Curculigo pilosa tuber, only ß-amylase was detected as starch degrading enzyme and its activity was approximately 282 Uig of fresh material. This standard establishes minimum requirements and design objectives for high-altitude electromagnetic pulse (HEMP) hardening of transportable1 ground-based systems that perform critical, time-urgent command, control, communications, computer, and intelligence (C4I) missions. Systems required to fully comply with the provisions of the standard will be designated by the Joint Chiefs of Staff, a Military Department Headquarters, or a Major Command.

The standard prescribes minimum performance requirements for low-risk protection from mission-aborting damage or upset due to HEMP threat environments. We show that there exists a natural extention of the sum of divisors function to all unique factorization domains F having a finite number of units such that if a perfect number in F is defined to be an integer η whose proper divisors sum to η, then the analogue of Euclid's theorem giving the sufficient condition that an integer be an even perfect number holds in F, and an analogue of the Euclid-Euler theorem giving the necessary and sufficient condition that an even integer be perfect holds in those domains having more than two units, i. e., in Q(−1) …

A study investigated the relative importance of certain college attributes to the freshmen of Ashland University, a small, private university in Ohio. Five institutional characteristics were examined: availability and variety of financial aid, dorm life (living conditions and food quality), quality of education (quality of teaching, career relevance of the curriculum, and overall institutional reputation), student-faculty relationships and interaction (availability of faculty to students, faculty promotion of student development, and degree of faculty advice given to students on personal as well as academic matters), and campus social life.

The main result of this paper is that weak type multiplier theorems for Jacobi expansions yield weak type multiplier theorems for Hankel transforms.

In recent papers the authors studied multiplier theorems for ultraspherical and Jacobi expansions. An interesting paper of Igari suggested a new approach to multiplier theorems that used asymptotics instead of the elaborate machinery used earlier.

This paper extends the method of Igari to give the first weak type multiplier theorem for Hankel transforms. This extension is important in itself and because this method together with the authors’ results for Jacobi multipliers will generalize to the “radial” functions …
