The Coronavirus is very similar to both “The Plague” and “The Black Death” in numerous ways. The spread of infection, self-quarantine, travel bans, and lack of a cure, are all qualities that these diseases share.

If I could tell only one thing to future generations about the hardships of the pandemic, I would tell them that no one thing in life is permanent. Things you could never imagine being temporary can be taken from you in an instant. The pandemic has taught me how to adapt during difficult times.

The Connecticut Governor’s state-wide mask mandate for K-12 schools is set to expire at the end of this month, leaving the decision up to local communities. Because the CDC still lists Fairfield County as a high-transmission area and, on the advice of state and local health officials, Sacred Heart will continue to require indoor masking for the time being.

For me personally, I did not enjoy quarantining at all. I did enjoy seeing my family every day, however, I was very lonely. I couldn’t see any of my friends, which was very disappointing. Thankfully with social media I could facetime them and text them, but face-to-face contact with other people is very necessary; it is something you wouldn’t normally think is important, but when you are unable to physically be with other people, you realize how lonely you feel.

Transformative Vocabulary: Fusing Vocabulary Instruction With Citizenship Education, Thomas Broderick
Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) in Literacy
This action research sought ways to maximize secondary social studies teachers’ instructional time and merge their core functions as literacy, content and social-justice instructors. Drawing on a wide literature demonstrating potent correlation between requisite vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension, this action research investigated the potential interface between explicit literacy instruction, particularly robust vocabulary instruction, and democratic citizenship, while keeping in mind the intent of the Common Core Standards. In other words: is it possible to fuse robust vocabulary instruction to achieve transformative citizenship? Data collection included multiple in-person and digital interviews with veteran K-12 teachers, administrators and university professors about …

Shared academic governance is a key to ensuring that faculty and administration can work collaboratively to reach strategic planning outcomes, maintain excellence and show continued growth and collegiality in higher education. This workshop will elaborate on experiences I have had in both a university senate and academic assembly, present scenarios that the group can brainstorm on, and conclude with suggestions on how all faculty can become involved.

The coronavirus came to America in the beginning of the year, 2021. My contribution is based on the virus's peak and how it affected my family. My essay ranges from what life was like as a high school student in New York witnessing the pandemic to my family being exposed. It touches on the important features of being in lockdown and the adjustment society had to make that still exists today. A common theme throughout my assessment is the development of fear from the coronavirus. It discusses how fear has driven many of the restrictions that my community has had …

As you know, we have been extremely successful keeping the community safe and the number of COVID cases low. This has been a result of vaccinations, testing and your diligence with masking and other safety protocols. Because the omicron variant is so highly transmissible, it presents some different challenges than we have previously faced, but nothing that we can’t handle.

Updated CDC Guidelines for Quarantining and Isolating
The CDC recently updated its guidelines for quarantining and isolating. We delayed implementing the new guidelines, because we expected the CDC to release more specific guidance for institutions of higher education. After consulting with state and local health officials, we have decided to move forward with the new guidelines. When the CDC does release guidelines for higher education, we will review them and may update our protocols accordingly. We are sharing some highlights of the new guidelines below, but the guidance is constantly changing, and you can find the most up-to-the-minute decisions on …

“I Kind Of Pushed Back”: Efficiency And Urgency In A No-Excuses Writing Curriculum, Katie Nagrotsky

Drawing on the concept of structuring contexts (Berchini, 2016) this article explores a white teacher’s understanding of teaching writing in a no-excuses charter management organization network. Through a deductive analysis, the author traces how the teacher’s beliefs about language were shaped by the CMO’s emphasis on efficiency, influencing how he acted on and adapted centralized curriculum and assessment practices. Documenting the ways that whiteness works within the writing curriculum and assessment practices despite stated broader organizational commitments to culturally relevant teaching, the author shows how the curriculum appropriated texts written by People of Color while the assessment practices prioritized correctness …

This qualitative investigation examines how teacher candidates enrolled in literacy courses navigated virtual field work experiences during summer and fall 2020. The study is grounded in theories of improvisation as a pedagogical practice and culturally responsive and sustaining approaches to teaching. Data show that teacher candidates took advantage of the affordances of the environment and adapted their practice to suit the new situation by improvising and growing their virtual teaching skillset for culturally responsive literacy instruction. Findings reveal the importance of teacher candidates developing improvisational culturally responsive and sustaining practices, including learning about students’ interests, cultures, and experiences and applying …
