The SUNY Journal of the Scholarship of Engagement: JoSE

Venezuela's sociopolitical landscape has deteriorated significantly over the past decade, culminating in a profound humanitarian crisis. This ethnography, conducted from 2015 to the present, explores the experiences of a study group comprising 2000 Venezuelan communication college students, aged 17 to 25, who navigate structural violence while striving for quality higher education. The research employed a multifaceted approach, encompassing interviews, focus groups, and observations. Additionally, this qualitative study examines the outcomes of implementing an interdisciplinary journalism curriculum grounded in human rights and media activism, complemented by online sessions and an environmental education component. Learning By Doing: College Students Promoting Children’S Philosophical Inquiry In Schools, Margaret Gichuru, Lin Lin, Mecke E. Nagel

The SUNY Journal of the Scholarship of Engagement: JoSE

This focus group study explores the perceptions and experiences of college students working within an applied learning program during the COVID-19 pandemic. The program engages children from prekindergarten to sixth grade in local schools and early childhood education centers. The college students serve as teaching assistants in the SG Program hosted by an academic department in a northeastern university and lead philosophical inquiries as they read picture books. Informed by philosophical inquiry with children and the applied learning principles as the research framework, this focus group study invites five teaching assistants to three one-hour in-depth semi-structured interviews. The analysis of …

The Pro Se Speech and Debate Program is a student-led engaged learning program at Cornell University, housed within the New York State School of Industrial and Labor Relations (ILR). In this initiative, Cornell undergraduate and graduate students engage with justice-impacted youth (ages 14-17) in Central New York to provide mentorship and educational offerings. Cornell students serve as “speech and debate coaches” and peer mentors to youth involved in the Central New York Health Home Network’s (CNYHHN) “Restorative Integrated Youth Services” (RIYS) diversion program in Utica, New York. Concerned But Confused: University Students' Knowledge And Perceptions Of Climate Change, And How They Plan To Address It In Their Future Personal And Professional Lives., Miranda Kistner, Jeremy Jiménez

The SUNY Journal of the Scholarship of Engagement: JoSE

This article explores university students’ knowledge and concern level towards climate change, as well as potential roles they see themselves playing as teachers in a world increasingly affected by its impacts. A survey of 135 university students was conducted at SUNY Cortland, a medium-size state university in Upstate New York. Results show that these university students (among them pre-service teachers) are highly concerned about the potential impacts of climate change, especially for future generations. While they demonstrate some accurate knowledge of climate change, many hold many misconceptions about its causes and consequences. In articulating how they can or do respond …

Staying Engaged While Staying Home?: Service-Learning, Writing, And Covid-19, Christopher Iverson Nov 2022

Staying Engaged While Staying Home?: Service-Learning, Writing, And Covid-19, Christopher Iverson

The SUNY Journal of the Scholarship of Engagement: JoSE

As an approach to writing instruction that has traditionally required students to engage in in-person community projects, service-learning has also traditionally involved risks. For example, students engaging in service-learning without proper support often do not approach community partners with the appropriate respect, and when university stakeholders fail to make clear what their side can offer in a partnership, they can leave community partners in the lurch when the semester ends and students finish their community-engaged coursework. These risks can be mitigated through education and reflection for instructors and students alike. The COVID-19 pandemic and ensuing social distancing orders, however, left …

High-Impact Learning Experiences And Post-Graduate Outcomes: Exploring The Influence On Employment, Continuing Education And Salary, Alison Handy Twang Nov 2022

High-Impact Learning Experiences And Post-Graduate Outcomes: Exploring The Influence On Employment, Continuing Education And Salary, Alison Handy Twang

The SUNY Journal of the Scholarship of Engagement: JoSE

With the cost of college on the rise, and students increasingly viewing college as a pathway to a successful career, colleges and universities are under increasing pressure to demonstrate evidence of their effectiveness. High-impact learning experiences, such as internships, study abroad, service-learning, capstones and undergraduate research, have emerged as a promising practice to enhance student development during college; however, few studies have examined the impact of such practices on post-graduate indicators of success. This paper adds to our understanding of the benefits of high-impact learning by examining their influence on student post-graduate employment, continuing education and starting salary. The data …

Nurturing Mentorship Relationships Through Inquiry-Based Dialogue, Rhiannon M. Maton, Kathy Mantas Oct 2022

Nurturing Mentorship Relationships Through Inquiry-Based Dialogue, Rhiannon M. Maton, Kathy Mantas

The SUNY Journal of the Scholarship of Engagement: JoSE

Mentorship is an established practice supporting learning in applied and experiential education. Although scholarship acknowledges that effective mentorship involves both process and relationship (Kwan & Lopez-Real, 2005), little is known about what allows for the development of positive and productive relationships between mentees and their mentors. This essay looks specifically at the mentorship of preservice teachers, and posits that at the heart of developing productive mentorship relationships is inquiry-based dialogue, an interpersonal method of fostering critical reflective dialogue through nurturing, thoughtful, inquisitive and non-hierarchical communication. The authors, who were partnered as mentor-mentee in a preservice teacher in-school immersion experience …

Critical Foundations For Civic Engagement: Reimagining Civic Learning For A University Honors Program, Alison Handy Twang, Benjamin J. Deangelis, Justine L. Lewis, Elizabeth A. Mellin, Katherine S H Bouman, William L. Ziegler

The SUNY Journal of the Scholarship of Engagement: JoSE

Scholars are calling attention to shortcomings of service-learning, including the development of civic skills and adoption of a social change framework. Informed by this literature, this article uses a mixed-methods case study to detail the development, and initial outcomes, of a civic engagement course intended to lay a critical foundation for future service. This study documents the process of reimagining the class, formerly organized as a service project, and course evaluations and reflections are used to assess outcomes. Initial assessment signals impact in challenging previous assumptions about service, understanding the multifaceted nature of civic engagement, and motivating future responsible engagement.

The Scripture Of Maps, The Names Of Trees, Stephen Trimble

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

The first six years of life work their subtle power on us throughout our lives. We remember few specifics. But our bedrock emotional security - our trust- comes from this time. We spend our first years striving to develop what psychologists call "a sense of competence." This drive for mastery- of grasping, crawling, walking, talking, and play-leads to astonishingly rapid and broad learning.

Recent research has surprised us with how emphatically our behavior and personalities are hard-wired by genetics. We start with our general emotional outlook on the world fixed by the magical code of our genes. The bent of …

Common Ground: Education, Recreation, And The Environment, Curt Schatz, Tehri Parker Feb 1995

Common Ground: Education, Recreation, And The Environment, Curt Schatz, Tehri Parker

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

Outdoor recreation programs and outdoor education programs share "common ground" - a similar purpose and programmatic focus on environmental awareness and ethics. As Ford ( 1981) has suggested, "there is very little difference between an education program and a recreation program" - both "contribute to the individual's ability to function effectively in society" (p. 50). Despite their similarities, education and recreation in the outdoors are traditionally separated, and one is emphasized over the other as the substance" of what is offered in a program. While they often contain a recreational element, environmental education programs tend to emphasize knowledge as an …
