Design Of Innovative Engineering Products In An Engineering Design And Project Management Course, Ali Pahani Apr 2019

Design Of Innovative Engineering Products In An Engineering Design And Project Management Course, Ali Pahani

ExEL Conference

In this course students learn engineering design principles to convert an innovative idea into an engineering product. More specifically, they learn the arrangement of the physical elements, how to determine the exact values, dimensions, or tolerances, how to design for sustainability and manufacturability, cost analysis, and market study. As a class project, they will apply all these knowledge to design an engineering product, which is innovative and patentable. Student will then cooperate with NSU TRED office for possible IP protection and commercialization.

Exel From Day One: Intentional Course Design In Experiential Learning, Judith Slapak-Barski Apr 2019

Exel From Day One: Intentional Course Design In Experiential Learning, Judith Slapak-Barski

ExEL Conference

Infusing experiential learning in classroom experiences becomes a priority when addressing the needs of 21st-Century learners. Harvesting the advantages of online and blended learning, paired with intentional instructional design involves effective use of digital learning to support face-toface and web-enhanced instruction. The process entails, at minimum, planning based on needs assessment, followed by course design and development, utilizing proven instructional design practices and continuous monitoring and evaluation of instructor performance, student learning, and course content.

Written Critical Reflections–The Cornerstone Of Exel Assessment, Molly J. Scanlon Apr 2019

Written Critical Reflections–The Cornerstone Of Exel Assessment, Molly J. Scanlon

ExEL Conference

In this presentation, participants will learn how reflections can be used by students to demonstrate learning by experience. Participants will be able to define reflection, articulate its significance in experiential learning pedagogy, and practice reflection for their own personal and professional growth. The presentation will begin with a discussion of reflection as an NSEE principle and as a common assignment in UNIV 1000: First-Year Experience. Participants will then be asked to write brief reflections based on their own experiences and reframe those jottings for other professional contexts such as a CV entry or an annual review report.

Four Scalable Models Of Experiential Learning At Nsu University School K-12, Samantha Nelson Apr 2019

Four Scalable Models Of Experiential Learning At Nsu University School K-12, Samantha Nelson

ExEL Conference

We will discuss our experience in taking internships to the next level by adding reflections, cohorts, collaboration, and more. We will discuss challenges, obstacles, and leg-work that come with the logistics of setting up these meaningful experiences. We will explain our process digitizing and simplifying the reflection and communication steps. These experiences are all about creating real connections to learning with community partners in classrooms. We will also give examples of how we have implemented research-based professional development such as digital resource commons and faculty showcases.

A Walk Through The Exel Co-Curricular Internship Process, Maggie Morrissey, Gabriella Gross

ExEL Conference

This presentation will focus on the Experiential Education Internship process that the Office of Career Development has created for students. We will dive into a step-by-step journey of a student and what they go through to show the beginning, middle, and end stages of an experiential internship. We will share best practices on how to incorporate intention and reflection into the process to ensure that the experience aligns with a student’s academic and career goals.

Sensational Experiential Learning In Psyc3920, Leanne Boucher Apr 2019

Sensational Experiential Learning In Psyc3920, Leanne Boucher

ExEL Conference

Students in PSYC 3920: Sensation and Perception were required to complete several hands on science communication assignments. They visited a local science museum to study how science exhibits are created and reflected on how well the exhibited communicated the scientific idea to the public, they evaluate several online science news sites including TED videos, popular science websites, and science themed blogs, and finally they created a hands on demonstration on a topic we covered in class for a homeschool STEM program at the Alvin Sherman Library.

Turning What You Do In The Classroom Into A Publication Or Conference Presentation, Rita Shea-Van Fossen Apr 2019

Turning What You Do In The Classroom Into A Publication Or Conference Presentation, Rita Shea-Van Fossen

ExEL Conference

Most academics are trained to do rigorous research in their field, and view teaching responsibilities as disconnected from their research agenda. This session will merge these activities and provide participants with a primer on the scholarship of teaching and learning (SOTL). This PDW will help those interested in developing what they do in the classroom into teaching and learning academic conference presentations, publishable classroom activities, peerreviewed journal publications, and other intellectual contributions.
