Where Cultural Competency Begins: Changes In Undergraduate Students' Intercultural Competency, Elizabeth J. Sandell, Samantha J. Tupy
Elementary and Literacy Education Department Publications
Teacher preparation programs and accreditation organizations have acknowledged need for educators to demonstrate intercultural knowledge, skills, and abilities. Teacher educators are responding to emphasis in higher education to assure that graduates achieve intercultural competence (NCATE, 2008). This study compared the cultural competency of university students before and after participation in domestic intensive and intentional cross-cultural undergraduate courses. Data analysis showed that undergraduate students began their classes at the same levels of intercultural competence, with ethnocentric views that minimize cultural differences between themselves and others. Students usually began with over-estimating their intercultural competence. However, their actual developmental orientation toward cultural differences …

Teacher education programs require attention to the rapid changes in the world, in part because populations are becoming increasingly diverse. These rapidly changing classroom environments have prompted a need to train teachers who can communicate with and teach students from increasingly diverse backgrounds. In addition, they must have an understanding of cultural family values and practices which influence individual students among the various ethnic populations they teach. This paper will describe steps taken by one College of Education to create international partnerships and learning experiences in an effort to enhance their teacher training programs and develop an environment of global-mindedness.

DINOSAUR ERA AND FOSSILS is one resource unit. It is hoped to serve as a resource to others as they guide the learning of young children. It is not a cut-and-dried, how-to-do-it book. But it is a collection of numerous learning experiences within the context of a unit setting. The various disciplines are not, and cannot, be separated; learning overlaps. With a central theme, young children will have many opportunities to examine, investigate, explore, experience and discover concepts of meaning. As the children approach the same concept from a number of experiences, they will have opportunities to formulate ideas, to …
