Trauma Informed Practices In Education And Social Justice: Towards A Critical Orientation, Mark Boylan
Trauma Informed Practices In Education And Social Justice: Towards A Critical Orientation, Mark Boylan
International Journal of School Social Work
Increasingly, educational practitioners committed to social justice embrace trauma-informed practices and those who advocate for and enact trauma-informed practices are committed to social justice. However, connecting social justice to trauma-informed practice requires greater conceptual clarity than is currently found, given the malleable meanings of both 'trauma informed' and 'social justice'. Further, the complex relationship between these educational aims is under-examined. To address these issues, an analytical framework is developed that brings together a model of forms of trauma-informed practice in education with orientations to social justice. This draws on models of social justice developed in social work and teaching, and …
The Cynefin Framework: A Retrospective Application To University Library Leadership Covid-19 Responses, Alexis M. Eberth
The Cynefin Framework: A Retrospective Application To University Library Leadership Covid-19 Responses, Alexis M. Eberth
Kansas Library Association College and University Libraries Section Proceedings
The purpose of this paper is to investigate how university library leadership retrospectively applied the Cynefin framework to COVID-19 responses. Developed using the principles of complexity theory, the Cynefin framework is a sense-making framework that assists those who use it with decision making in ordered and un-ordered situations. The framework comprises five domains: (a) clear, (b) complicated, (c) complex, (d) chaotic, and (e) aware and confused. Because problems are ever-evolving, the cyclical nature of the Cynefin framework allows for and encourages transitions between domains. Through reflection on their experiences during the pandemic, library leaders can utilize the framework’s tenets to …

Reaping The Whirlwind: American Degree And Subject Colours (1962–Present), Kenny Suit
Transactions of the Burgon Society
A committee of representatives from several universities in the U.S. East Coast, called the Intercollegiate Commission on Academic Costume, standardized the American system of academic costume in 1895. The keystone of the standards was the hood, in its shape, edging, and colours. This article looks at changes to the colours assigned to degrees and areas of study from 1962 through the present. Charts showing when the colours started, and in some cases stopped, being used make up the appendices.

Cap And Gown? Use Of Headgear At Graduation In Uk Universities In The Twenty-First Century, Martin J. Hardcastle
Transactions of the Burgon Society
Academic headwear, partticularly in the form of the square cap or mortar-board, is perhaps the most widely recognised symbol of educational achievement in the world. This article surveys the current practice of wearing academic caps of all types at graduation ceremonies in UK universities, to understand whether there are common factors in the use or disuse of headwear, and thus tentatively to explain the wide variation in practice that is seen in the twenty-first century.
The Evolution Of Undergraduate Academic Dress At The University Of Cambridge And Its Constituent Colleges, Brian M. Newman
The Evolution Of Undergraduate Academic Dress At The University Of Cambridge And Its Constituent Colleges, Brian M. Newman
Transactions of the Burgon Society
This paper charts the development of the distinctive academic costume worn by undergraduate members of England’s second oldest university, Cambridge. It follows the evolution in undergraduate academic dress from differentiation based upon social class and wealth (and regulated as such by the University) to one of differentiation, in most historical cases at least, by the college of which undergraduates are members, about which the University’s only current stipulation is that gowns should be knee-length.

‘Different Forms Of Gowns For All Sorts Of Scholars In Their Several Ranks’: Academic Undress At Oxford In 1635, Alex Kerr
Transactions of the Burgon Society
This is a study of a one-page manuscript in the Oxford University Archives with the title ‘Different Forms of Gowns for All Sorts of Scholars in their Several Ranks’, dated June 1635. It was clearly written in connection with the Laudian Code of statutes, which was drafted in 1634 and adopted in 1636. The Code included regulations on university dress and its use at Oxford that would remain in force for 134 years. The document gives a concise specification for Oxford gowns at a time when other written records providing such detail are lacking and pictorial evidence is sparse. This …

‘Degrees Of Degrees’: An Alternative Structure, Graham Zellick Qc
‘Degrees Of Degrees’: An Alternative Structure, Graham Zellick Qc
Transactions of the Burgon Society
This article refers to Neil K. Dickson’s article, ‘Degrees of Degrees’, in Transactions of the Burgon Society, 19 (2019), pp. 183–203, and provides an alternative taxonomy with the emphasis on contemporary practice. It affords an understanding of academic dress because academic dress varies not only with specific degrees but with the category of degree, subject to the caveat that nearly all generalizations about academic dress tend to be wrong. The article also discusses the use of the title ‘Dr’ with honorary degrees and begins with some comments on Dr Dickson’s analysis of degrees.

Superintendent formal mentorship programs have traditionally relied on geographic proximity and mentor availability to pair new superintendents with mentors. This study examines which mentor characteristics contribute to mentee satisfaction with the formal mentorship program. This study used a quantitative research design in which participants completed a survey used to compare mentor characteristics to mentee satisfaction with the program. 73 (49.6%) superintendents participated in the study, of which 19 had participated in a formal mentorship program. The overall research results suggest that two mentor characteristics, Leadership/Disposition Qualities and Mentor Availability had a significant positive relationship to mentee satisfaction with the formal …

Journal of International Agricultural and Extension Education
Advancing information and communication technologies (ICTs) has become central to international agricultural and extension development efforts. ICTs are crucial in facilitating information transfer, ensuring stakeholder access to information, and increasing the decision-making capacity of smallholder farmers. The research presented here introduces an instrument developed to quantify perceptions of ICT use capacity within international extension networks. The aggregate scale was verified for content validity, response process validity, internal structure validity, and consequential validity informing its use. The instrument was administered to network members (n = 122) associated with the Global Forum for Rural Advisory Services. An exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was …

Building Self-Reliance: A Framework To Evaluate Smallholder Coffee Farmers’ Pursuit Of Commercialization, Colby J. Silvert, John Diaz, Laura A. Warner, T. Grady Roberts, Raul Injoque
Journal of International Agricultural and Extension Education
This study examines the application of a self-reliance framework for practitioners and evaluators to better understand the capacities and intrinsic factors impacting smallholder coffee farmers’ commercialization behaviors. We surveyed 40 smallholder coffee producers in Peru using a quantitative instrument. Data were analyzed to determine if statistical relationships exist between farmers’ self-reliance (measured via knowledge and skills, attitudes, and aspirations) and their commercialization behaviors. Findings indicate the self-reliance framework effectively illustrates relationships between farmers’ aspirations, knowledge and skills and their commercialization behaviors, while future, additional studies are needed to better measure and understand the role of commercialization-related attitudes. Practitioners can leverage …
