Family And Consumer Sciences Life Skills: Attainment By Secondary School Students , Robin Trimble White

This study evaluated the effectiveness of Iowa's secondary school family and consumer sciences programs as perceived by students. A two-stage stratified random sampling procedure resulted in usable data from 273 graduating seniors from 98 schools during the 1995-96 school year. The sample was comprised of 135 students (53% males, 47% females) with one semester or less of family and consumer sciences education and 138 students (34% males, 66% females) with three or more semesters of instruction. This study examined family and consumer sciences secondary school teachers' self-reported knowledge, ability, interests, feelings, beliefs, and teaching preferences toward interactive teleteaching when using curriculum competencies. Two hundred fifty family and consumer sciences secondary school teachers in the state of Iowa were randomly selected. Of these, 112 teachers became the data producing sample of this study. Results indicated that there were no significant differences among teachers' self-reported knowledge, ability, interests, feelings, and beliefs toward interactive teleteaching when compared to their years of experience as an educator. The overall purpose of this study was to determine how schools are incorporating health concepts into their curricula. A sample of 148 Iowa secondary school health teachers, 97 (66%) females and 51 (34%) males responded to a health education survey related to two specific purposes of the study, which were to examine: (1) organizational aspects of health curricula for grades nine through twelve, and (2) secondary school health teachers' attitudes toward the eleven health strands that make up one unit of health as mandated by the Iowa General Assembly.
